we have a mandatory meeting today... that's not the sucky part, the sucky part is I have to miss this meeting because I will likely be in the ER then... anyone here know of what would cause severe pain in the rib area, cause difficulty breathing, and make movement of the upper body difficult other than a cracked/broken rib? If so please let me know because at this point I think I cracked one of my ribs
so I have 2 choices, go to the mandatory meeting and put off going to the hospital to make sure I didn't crack a rib or go to the hospital and miss the mandatory meeting which will probably come back to haunt me.
so for the time being I am no longer smileyeagle1021, until I can breath again I will be simply eagle1021.

Being in the ER due to having pain
which could be a multitude of things . . . is a higher priority than a meeting.
Call and leave a voice mail that you are headed to the ER. Make sure you get documentation of when you arrive and when you leave the ER along with any instructions - like not allowed to drive or mandatory bedrest.
Most labor laws will keep you protected with that documentation that you were in the ER.

thank you, I'm hoping that I'll go in, they'll run their test and say it's not cracked just took a bad blow and it hurts like hell but wait it out and it will get better... then grumble about paying $100 for that... but then again, if it is serious I'll kick myself for not paying the $100 and getting it fixed.

I do feel your pain . . .bruised/ cracked ribs are no fun . . . .
I had an allergry related caugh that had been going on for two months. When I saw caugh I mean people that didn't know me thought I was dying, it was loud and sounded horrible.
Well one day I sneezed . . .heard a crunch sound as did a co-worker standing there and felt a sharp pain.
Next day called into work and said I had to go to Dr.
Sure enough I cracked a rib by sneezing. (caugh had built up muscles)

you win... whatever injury I have is from helping a friend move furniture... (we were moving a desk up the stairs and we dropped it and the corner of the desk hit me square on the top rib)

Call and speak to somebody in management and leave a message just to CYA and get as much documentation as you can about the ER visitation, etc. Your health and well-being is more important right now.

well, the good news from the doctor is that I don't have a cracked rib, just a really badly bruised rib... should heel in 4 weeks (grimace)... and the company didn't have any problem with me going to the instacare (half the copay of ER, just as effective for everything short of a car accident... I love my insurance).

Any company that would put a meeting above an ER visit can go to hell in my book.
Glad it's not serious. I prescribe ice cream and advil. Or the other way around. Whatever. :)
I will be helping my brother move on Saturday. Hopefully there will be no injuries.

smileyeagle, I'm glad it's only a bruised rib instead a of a broken rib. Dr. Tropicsgoddess' prescription for this: take 2 shots of [insert name of your favorite alcoholic beverage] and call me in the morning. :)

fortunately my company was willing to let me stay late for the night shift meeting instead of going to my meeting for the afternoon shift (I did go back to work right after leaving the clinic... albeit 2 and a half hours late... kind of impressive considering I did 52 blocks in under 15 minutes)
and best of luck with the furniture... be careful on stairs
and you're not as nice as the doctor... who gave me a prescription for lortab... which will likely sit in my dresser unused because that stuff scares the shit out of me

is the pain localized? that is, can you pinpoint it to one specific area that it radiates from? is is just on one side? if so, it could possibly be pleurisy. i'm actually suffering from it right now, and it's no fun.
eta: guess i should read the whole thread before posting :o glad to hear it's not serious.
