I think this is the right place for this:

I just interviewed (and did really well:D) for a Hotel Front Desk Clerk position. I was wondering if any of you have any tips for someone new to this specific job.

Depending on the type of hotel and the time of day, be prepared to be yelled at a lot. :D

But good luck and I hope you get and LIKE the job!

Congratulations! :grats:

Working for the Hotel industry is fun and (usually) interesting. I do have a couple tips for you;

- Stop smoking now. It'll be a pain to try to squeeze your smoke breaks in while busy checking in/out guests. I've noticed that some guests just like to complain about smoke and would love to pin it on the front desk clerk. *sad sigh* Besides, you'll be healthier for it. (I only say this because the position that I have taken over used to belong to this guy that would refuse to be bothered on his smoke breaks and told many a customer to either wait or to F* themselves.)

-Bring a book. This little piece of advice was given to me back when I got my first hotel job ever (three years ago this summer) and I've taken these words with me everywhere. There is a lot of downtime and the internet is only so interesting. Also, when customers do come to the desk, it's easy to put a bookmark in and come back to it later.

-Carry plenty of change and small bills on you. I get a lot of foreigners that stay in my hotel and on the rare occasion they'll mix in their regular money (mostly coinage) in with our money. Now, my boss and co workers hate getting funny money so they leave it in the till so I can buy it off for face value. You never know when you're going to find yourself in one of the neighboring countries and need that dumb Canadian $2 coin or Mexican Peso. (I live in the US)

-Learning to smile across the phone is easy. Just pretend you're talking to a dear friend that you haven't seen in a few years and the smiles will come through just fine.

Have you worked as a CSR before? And congrats again!

Never smoked in my life, and don't plan to start. Nasty habit.

Check! I love to read.:D

I was only out of the country once, and that was 13 years ago. I don't plan on doing it again.

As a former telemarketer, I think I have this one down.:D

Yep. Worked in a Grocery store for a while, and as a Telephone Service Representative (both Telemarketing, and taking calls from customers).

Customers. In my experience you rarely get yelled at by your boss. The boss will have a nice "heart to heart" (which is what my current boss is fond of doing) but nothing to upset you. At least, that's in my experience.

I figured.:p

I have the natural ability to smile at anybody when I'm at work.:)

And if that offends someone, I can always smile more :D

I discovered the best way to piss someone off is to smile at them while they're angry. :)
