I saw a commercial for a new asthma medication yesterday and being asthmatic, I paid attention.
I was turned off of the medication for two reasons:
1) May take up to 15 minutes to work. Sorry, but they're advertising this for asthma attacks, I'd like to breath NOW thank you, not wait 15 minutes. I don't know about everyone else, but getting oxygen into my lungs is a little important.
2) May increase the chances of asthma related death. Um.. I take an medication made to help asthma but in the end it might cause the asthma to kill me? No thank you...

There is also one for allergies that is a nose spray that can cause nasel fungal infections... um, I think I'll deal with the allergies!

I'm still trying to figure out how "respiratory infection" can be a side effect of medication...

What the hell happened to Primatene?
We used to carry it, and then one day it was out of stock and we haven't gotten it in since.

Pulled from the market. Plan now is to remove all CFC propelled drugs. The regular inhalers are being phased out (and will be completely gone within a year). Then the only ones are the non-CFCs. Would be nice but of course the price on the non-CFC inhalers have doubled in the past 2 years. They are much nicer inhalers to use.

From what a Pharmacist told me, that it crystallizes your lungs or something? No idea what he meant by that or if thats even true.

Gotta love meds where the side effects are worse than the problem they are treating. I love the one for psoriasis where it leaves your immune system open to anything.

I have to disagree. Sure, the non CFC version is much smaller, it does not work as well. I am glad I still have a few of the CFC ones left but they will be gone by the end of the year.
I don't know what I'll do next. They gave me a prescription for SingulAir (sp?) , but I can't afford that since my insurance only covers part of it.

Yes, all medications using CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) propellants were pulled off the market because of their risk to environment. Now all you can get are HFA (hydrofluoroalkaine). The drug is the same, it is just the propellants that are different.
Albuterol was one of the most well known that was removed. It still exists but in brand forms only (ProAir HFA, Proventil HFA, Ventolin HFA) because the HFA formulation has not lost its patent yet. So now everybody who had a nice generic has to pay for the brand. Ugh.
