View Full Version : UK peeps: Provisional Lisences as ID

Right, whilst visiting my lovely* local branch of ASDA to purchase some lager, I was informed that they do not accept a provisional driving lisence as ID. Is this the case country-wide or just ASDA's nitpicking? I was informed that a full driving lisence would be acceptable

What they are basically saying is that I need to pass my driving test in order to buy beer. It made me giggle when I thought of that, but seriously HOW is a provisional lisence harder to forge than a full one? It's just a different color with an 'L' plate logo on it.

Anyway, has anyone else in the UK had trouble, or will it be another one of those things that only happens to me? :(

Hmm - depends. Does the provisional have a photo-id part these days? Mine didn't, but there's grey in my beard. If it has a picture, then I suspect Asda's being nitpicky.

I imagine that there is no law that a driver's licence of any stage *must* be accepted as ID. It would be up to each individual retailer. Most places say "driver's licence" because it's convenient. Nearly every adult has one, and it has a photo on it.

But it's not a state issued identification card. It's a permit to drive. If they chose not to accept learner stage licences, I don't think there's a damned thing to be done about it.

It is ludicrous though. Maybe they think if you passed the test you'll drive that much better after the beers? :D

I have absolutely NO CLUE for the UK, but here is left to retailers what they will accept as valid, and what they won't.

I live in Mass., but liquor and cigs are much cheaper 15 mins north of me in New Hamp. The store I frequent, will accept NH & MA drivers licenses, but not state issued ID WHICH IS IDENTICAL, except instead of saying Drivers License at the top it say Identification Card. The even funnier thing is they take my Connecticut driver's license even though that is also on the not accepted list.

Yeh, it's a plastic card and has a paper accompaniment too (but I don't carry that with me)

You ought to see the looks when you present you handgun carry permit for ID. Most of the time they turn into jabbering loons.

Hahaha, I can imagine :D

I have something similar, my ATC handbook has my photo in and is basically my permit to handle rifled weapons on a range, but nowhere accepts it as ID usually.
What made me laugh is that ASDA clearly states that they ID anyone who looks under 21 (to prove that they are 18) and in the list of things that they accept as ID, guess what's in it. DRIVING F'ING LICENCE.

:headscratch:

When the (now) DH was 17, his High School class took their Senior trip down to Galveston (Gulf coast). Being an Army brat, he had his Military Dependent ID. Apparently the folks in Galveston were so used to Military ID's, that they neglected to check his birthdate (18 was legal back then). Guess who brought back a few cases of beer to the hotel that night!?

So you have to be able to drive to be able to buy liquor there? I'm now waiting for the day someone who medically can't drive slaps a hefty lawsuit on them for discrimination.

Keep us informed! :)

So, if you want booze, you HAVE to learn to drive and get a license? Isn't the whole point of the ID card is for tose who have no interest or need to learn how to drive?

And actually, in Massachusetts (at least when I was last there in 1998), there are photos on lerner permits and temporary licences. The idea is so they *can* be used as ID.

Minnesota lerner permits are printed on cards just like DLs and IDs are, with photo. Temporary licences are just yellow sheets with your currrent info and must be accompanied with your old licence (which they give back to you) to be used as valid ID

NM state ID cards and permits have photos; really the only difference from full licenses is that the permit says "Learner's Permit" and the ID says "Identification".

MA uses paper cards for their permits that fall apart fairly quickly. They're also a strange size (when I had one they were the size of a payroll check), so you can't really keep it in your wallet.
