Our foster daughter is spending the weekend with family. It's her step-mom's birthday and she didn't have a gift, so she asked me if I would help her make a cake.

I let her do it all, and only showed her on the back of a cake pan how to do the basics.
She spent a lot of time practicing borders until she got the knack of it.

I showed her 2 roses, and then let her try. Her first rose was perfect.
She's a natural with that part. She also got the rosebuds on the first try.

I was so proud of her.

I let her use an icing press to get the lettering looking professional. It makes an indent on the cake, and all she had to do was trace over the lines with icing.
It made the cake look like it was done by someone who has been decorating for a while, instead of the first attempt.
She was excited and couldn't wait to show the cake off.
I have a Yahoo page with my cakes, and I told her, "This one is definitely going on the internet with your name on it.

Here is her very first attempt at a rose, as well as the finished product.

Awesome work. Her step-mom will not believe she did it herself!

Good goin Ree.Well, thanks, but she deserves the credit.

I wish I could put into words exactly how it felt looking at her face when she was finished.
She just felt so proud and accomplished.

I really hope her family makes a fuss and gives her lots of compliments.

I really hope they don't accuse her of trying to pass off my work as hers.
That would just suck so much.

Wow, she did a good job! Maybe that would be a good career direction for her? She certainly has the talent.

I put the leftover icing in the fridge and told her that, any time she wants, she can play around with my decorating tools and see what each thing does.
She seemed really open to that.

I do think she has a naturally artisitic talent, and she definitely has a knack for baking.
I am hoping that she will consider developing her skills and applying for work in that field, although her goal is to go to school and study Kinesiology.
It's still a pretty handy skill to have to fall back on.

That is awesome. Definitely try to encourage skill that good. At the least it'll be a fun thing for her to do every once and a while for things like birthdays and holidays.
