My roommate and I have a disagreement and I can't figure out who better to solve it. Its pretty simple, which is the better Zelda game, Zelda A Link to the Past(Snes) or Ocarina of Time(N64). This has been an ongoing debate for us for years. I won't go into who likes what yet as I'm curious to see how the poll plays out.

I'd have to go with Ocarina of Time, Hell, I even have Saria's song as my ringtone.

Link to the Past all the way! Not that I don't love OoT as well, but LttP shall always be my favourite :D

To be honest, this isn't exactly fair. Sure, they're from the same series, but on different consoles -- thusly different graphics and that is a big thing people go for. If you want a fair poll, you should ask which is the better Zelda Gameboy Game.

But my vote goes to A Link to the Past.

Graphics don't impact the rating for me - I just feel Link To The Past had better gameplay and level design and all that :)

If you'll notice, that was one of the biggest complaints when WindWaker came out.

I'm a big Zelda fan and own every legend of zelda game ever created.

After it came out, and people played it, the REAL reason to complain came out. It was too damned short for how long we had to wait for it. Sorry, but sailing around does not an increase in game length make.

Agreed. It's sooo short, it's barely worth playing.

But I own it and play it anyways. :D

One of the things that bugs me at times in Phantom Hourglass is the sailing around. Yes, you have the Cyclone Slate (sea warp) but only some symbols of the ones I've found actually work for me (do they have to be drawn a certain way?).

LOL, too funny. I just pulled my N64 and OoT out of the closet the other day after seeing that fake movie trailer. OoT all the way!

Neither. The Adventures of Link (Legend of Zelda 2 for NES). :)

But, Link to the Past isn't that bad.

Of the two in the poll I prefer Link to the Past.

Ocarina of Time was too easy by comparison to the other games in my opinion. The other thing is I remember Ocarina of Time being a huge disapointment after much of the hype it received.

Now out of the entire series I vastly prefer Twilight Princess for its story and characters. I really liked Midna's mischeviousness :)

I finally got my paws on a Wii bundle so I now need to pick up Twilight Princess.

OT somewhat, is the first Zelda game available as freeware/abandonware/ any downloadable version for Windows? I did find one (Zelda Classic), but it refuses to work and I don't know why.

Not legally. Nintendo firmly asserts its copyrights, and has never allowed any of its games to be availble for anything but its own systems.

There are fan games that allow you to play Zelda Classic as other characters, like Kirby or Mario. But those are fan subs and generally on somehting like NewGrounds.com

Which, by the way, you guys should try "The Legend of Zelda: The Lampshade of no real significance" It's funny and takes something like 10 minutes to play on New Grounds.

Between those two I have to go with Ocarina of Time. As the first Zelda game to step into 3d and really show what they could do there dungeon design wise. Plus the music the classic.

But if you include the entire series I have to go with Twilight Princess too. Not because it did anything drastically different from OoT but solely because of its characters. I loved Midna. Zelda was an afterthought to me by the end of Twilight Princess.

Warning: Long and opinionated.

I think OoT also, but more because that was the first game I ever truly became addicted to. I still get that juvenile feeling of absolute glee when I play it. The young Link/adult Link back-and-forth made it entirely more awesome and despite the countryside being mostly the same, it didn't have that "playing through the same level twice" feeling that a lot of other games have had.

Also, no sailing for 20 minutes to get to an island on the other side of the universe only to find out from some generic NPC "Thank you Link, but our princess is in another castle!" in so many words? Sign me up!

As for the "abandonware/freeware/etc" question: OoT, Majora, Legend of Zelda and Adventures of Link were all released on one disc (along with a Wind Waker demo) which came with certain GCN systems. The GCN discs work on the Wii console despite their being entirely different sizes (backwards compatibility done right ftw) so I still play those from time to time. You can probably find the disc online or in play-and-trade type game stores. Make sure you have a GCN controller to play them, as the regular Wiimote does not work with GameCube discs.

TWILIGHT PRINCESS SPOILER (KINDA) ALERT!
Minor spoilers outlined by "<|goofy brackets|>" and typed in white.

Twilight Princess was a step ahead for me more because it became darker than any of the prior Zelda series games. <|Characters actually, you know, die, as opposed to being "transformed" into ReDeads like in OoT.|> Also, a departure from the WindWaker "cartoon" graphics was nice and better looking, even though some of the elements included in WW were pretty cool. Even the sailing aspect was novel in WW's beginning when you had to rely on which direction the wind was blowing to get from place to place, and made the "bridge is out" or "you need [specific equipment item] to get there" methods of diversion practically unnecessary. One other thing that I liked from WW was the different sword attacks you could perform, and those were thankfully preserved (and greatly expanded and made more difficult to execute) in Twilight Princess. <|The light and dark worlds were a familiar return to the two-sided way of looking at things seen in OoT, and was very well done. Likewise, the ending battle (while not being unduly difficult) was also excellent, testing many different areas of Link's abilities, and hearkening back to some of the cooler bosses from OoT as well.|>

I think Twilight Princess is a departure from the rest of the series because Nintendo is starting to realize that the people who became addicted to Zelda, either back in '86 and more principally '87 (a good year, I might add) or not until '98, are starting to age and mature, and so G-rated video games aren't necessarily their cup of tea. Conveniently, after OoT, two parallel universes existed in the Zelda world and so while one has gone down the rather more kid-friendly path, the other has begun to take a darker turn. (Majora's Mask and Twilight princess being in one unverse, while Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass are in the other.)

Basically, through intent or accident, Nintendo has successfully doubled their Zelda gaming potential and greatly expanded their target market for Zelda games, including everyone from pre-teens to old Zelda veterans.

I'm not a big Zelda fan so I asked my roommate about them. He's of the opinion that Ocarina of Time is the better game.

Have to say I prefer A Link to the Past but part of that may be that I've played that one over and over and never finished the other one.

You mean I have to CHOOSE?!?!?!? Okay, I can do this.....I like that one since i thought the pink hair was funny.....but seeing the kid as a blonde was really hot....I liked the "superstition" thing about the sheild....oh but I never knew how nice it was until Ocarina....the little goofs were funny, what with the attacking chickens and I was so happy to see that funny come back in the second.....then again the second DID make me actually BUY an ocarina....oh but...and that one...it's just......

GAH!!!!!

You're not alone. I, too, was guilty of this. Well, my brother was, but I really really wanted one and had to instead learn to play his. His only had five holes though, as opposed to the seven on the one in the game, but you could totally whistle out "Bolero of Fire" and the "Song of Time" on that thing, among a few others.

Which is ironicly enough, on Gameboy Advance.

It's a very close call, but I'm going with LttP for a couple of simple reasons:

1. When you see the ending, depending on your theories of time manipulation, you went through everything for no reason. You didn't actually stop any of the events that occured when you got sent back and no one recognized you when it happened.

2. No NAVI! Do I need to go into that little creeps chatter? didn't think so.

Link's Awakening beats both of them out of the water. =P

But if I have to choose, definitely Link to the Past.

I just don't like the 3D Zeldas much. =/
