We have a set of 1983 World Book Encyclopedias that my parents no longer want. We absolutely hate throwing books away in this household :o and don't know what to do with these. Are they only valuable to the garbage man?:(

eBay? If there's anyone in the world remotely interested in them they'll probably be on eBay.

Ebay.

Yard sale.

Give or sell them to a friend.

Give or sell them to a coworker.

Give or sell them to a student.

Give or sell them to a stranger.

But if you throw good reference books away without even attempting to find a home for them, I think some of us biliophiles on this site are going to have a serious issue with you.

(Makes a serious stern face.)

The above suggestions are all good. Please, PLEASE DO NOT "give" them to your local library. They don't want them, and probably couldn't even sell them at their booksale. They're 25 years old. They're Wold Book, which means they're geared toward children ages 9-17.
How about putting them in boxes on your curb and writing "free to a good home" on them?

Ooo! I want! I love books and don't even have an encyclopedia set yet!

And if they're in kinda bad shape, I can always turn them into one of those hideaway books (where you... hide stuff...in them... yeah)

Well, I've been trying to get my mom to put them up on ebay or craigslist but she doesn't think she'll get enough to make it worth the hassle. I think she could get rid of them that way, though.

I'd heard at some time that sometimes interior designers will use them in a home where someone wants a "nice" set of matched books but has no intention of ever using them. These would certainly fit that description. They're the deep red leather look with gold lettering and trim, not the funny rainbow look that the new sets are. There is one missing, though. The C-Ch volume was lent out to a church member who never returned it.

Librarybabe: I know. I told her over and over that the library wouldn't be interested in them. After all, they get a brand-new set every couple of years. Next thing I know, she's walking out of the library with a disgusted look on her face and says "I can't even give them away!" I was like, "you actually asked them?" :ashamed:

What state do you live in and how heavy are they because I want to offer to buy them if it's a nice set. :)
