MTV Plots Rocky Horror Remake
24 July 2008 5:06 AM, PDT
Movie bosses at MTV have announced plans to remake cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The new film will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien and be overseen by Lou Adler - the executive producer on the 1975 hit, which starred Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. Although casting decisions have yet to be made, Adler hopes the picture will be ready in time for October 2009. He tells Daily Variety, "I'd like to see it shown a year from this coming Halloween, but that's up to MTV."

I'm scared. I'm really, really scared. I know fans have been screaming for a re-make for a while, but I don't think it can get much better than Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and MeatLoaf in an odd, poorly financed masterpiece by Richard O'Brian.

I'm afraid they'll drop out the camp in favor of gratuitous sex scenes. *sigh*

I'm just not sure what to think.....

being a huge fan of the original and dating a former rocky actress i worry they will hose it up with much worse. perhaps make something along the lines of highschool musical or a hannah montana type puke fest. somethings are best left unmade. unless of course they grab as many of the original cast as possible, then it may be worth while.

side note . . .was driving through a strip mall parking lot
painted on the front of the store is the mouth from the start of Rocky . . .business was a kinky bakery (it even called itself a kinky bakery) had a sign that you must be 18 to enter

As soon as I read the OP, I thought of this strip (http://somethingpositive.net/sp08302004.shtml).

Ya know, I think I'm with Emrld here. Rocky Horror is too great a movie to ruin by remaking it. I believe I'll boycott it as well.

What's wrong with the original that they feel the need to remake it? That's considered a classic movie. & by the way-I've never seen it!!

I think Hollywood has run out of ideas. They're remaking everything, even brilliant movies that don't need to be remade. They've been doing it for years. And the remakes are never better than the originals. :(

No man will ever be sexier in makeup and bondage lingerie than Tim Curry.

NO ONE.

MTV has ruined everything they've ever touched. I'm not going anywhere NEAR this.

SteelDragon, you've just scared 10 years off my life with the mental images that post brought up. Ugh! :runaway:

While I won't say that he's sexy (not my type) but I don't believe anyone can ever play Frank the way Tim Curry did. I've yet to see a role he's played that he hasn't excelled in. The man can act.

Although I know that some female fans wouldn't run away from seeing a certain British (http://www.johnbarrowman.com/) actor in this kind of role, and he'd probably do it.

While I personally won't outright boycott the movie, I doubt I'll bother with it, even IF there were a theater in the Denver area still showing Rocky...

Not a bad idea, but I'd rather see him in a stage production of The Rocky Horror Show than a remake of the movie.

Of course, it'd be hilarious if they could get David Tennant and Billie Piper to play Brad and Janet...

I know David Hasselhoff once said he'd love to play Frank n Furter....

Ye gods, I'm actually quaking in my boots now over this movie..
I really hope they tread carefully, but I somehow have a feeling that they'll replace the camp with a lot of potty humour and whatnot...

WTF are they smoking. This is one of those movies, that does not need to remade.

No movie worth its salt should be remade. We need originality and classic roles for each generation of actors, NOT ripoffs of the roles that made other actors famous. We all know why movies are remade ..... $$$$$$. The studios, in their infinite perversity, think that since a movie is classic, it should be remade to earn them even MORE money. This thinking has become so pervasive that message boards all the hell over the IMDb talk "remake, remake, remake". (Maybe the studios are planting these posts; it wouldn't surprise me.)

So I'm sickened by the thought of Rocky Horror being remade, when even the lowest-grade moron from Nunavut should realize that it can NEVER be improved. It CAN, however, be cheapened and wasted, which is exactly what will happen here.

Has anyone out there EVER known a remake to improve upon the original? I haven't.

I can actually think of two-

Night of the living dead 1990 version-directed by Tom Savini at the bequest of George Romero(George has said the 1990 remake was the movie he wanted to make but couldn't, and he only trusted Tom Savini on the project)

And

The Producers
Mel Brooks remade his movie into a broadway show and then back into a movie.

Gee, ya think? This is MTV we're talking about here.

Possible, but not likely IMO. That would be Disney.

In any case, I actually hope MTV makes this movie. I hope they spend a fortune making it. I hope they spend a fortune promoting it. And I hope nobody, NOBODY, goes to see it, so that all of MTV's money is wasted.

The Producers
Mel Brooks remade his movie into a broadway show and then back into a movie.

Even as a theatre junkie....I really didn't think The Producers was a good movie. It was a filmed version of Broadway play. Oh, it was funny and all, I laughed my tukkus off. And I often show "Springtime for Hitler" during Intro. to Theatre classes. Buuut...as a film? Nah. (I actually did think Will Ferrell did a very nice job. Uma Thurman...not so much.) After it and RENT (a whole other rant) I nearly lost faith in the movie musical.

After Young Frankenstein: The Musical I worry that Mr. Brooks might be losing his touch. I'll just stick to Spaceballs, History of the World, Part I, and Men in Tights.

If it were a filmmaker that I trusted, if I knew that Richard O'Brian would be heavily involved...I might not mind a RHPS remake. (Sonheim's seal of approval was the only reason I went to Sweeney Todd at ALL). It's the fact that MTV is doing it. It just makes me wonder what random pop star-of-the-minute they'll throw in to be Eddie.

As an old lady who came of age in the 1980's, when RH was still running midnight shows (I went twice a month and even took my mom once), I am disgusted, scared and HORRIFIED at the thought of this.

Add me to the boycott list.

Hmmmm if an indie theatre really wanted to capitalize on this AND draw people away from it, they should play the original version on the opening night of this monstrosity.

And include shadow performances with a script of screamer lines, glitter and the random junk you give to the cast before the show.
