View Full Version : Rich? Then try the World's Most Expensive Burger!!!

A couple years ago, there was a story about a restaurant in New York that was serving a gourmet burger that cost something like $45, much too rich for my blood!
Well, that restaurant has now been MASSIVELY outdone... by Burger King, of all places! Here's the story, courtesy of Wallet Pop (http://www.walletpop.com/specials/most-outrageously-expensive-items?photo=2). I'm posting the story here for the sake of those outside the US, since some internet sites are region specific and won't let you view their items if you're outside the country they're in:Most Expensive Fast Food Burger
Burger King, home of the Whopper, is selling The Burger in only one West London restaurant. The $400* burger is made of Wagyu beef, white truffles, Pata Negra ham slices, Cristal onion straws, Modena balsamic vinegar, pink Himalayan rock salt, organic white wine and shallot infused mayonnaise and served on an Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun. Now even those of you with the most sophisticated palates can go to Burger King and "have it your way."
http://www.aolcdn.com/channels/03/02/4884add5-001e2-05c6e-400cb8e1Well, I guess now we know where "The Donald" eats when he's in London!
I mean, there's overpriced, and then there's RIDONKULOUS! This one falls into the latter category, no doubt about it! I'll just stick with Burger King's normal Double Cheeseburger, thankyouverymuch! ;)
*EDIT: Apparently the person reporting this story has NO CLUE how to convert currency amounts! Another article, from British paper/tabloid The Sun, linked to in another post below, lists the price in London as £95... at the current exchange rate, that's about $185 and change. Still too bloody expensive for my taste, though.
And I thought Red Robbin and their $10-$12 burgers were outrageously priced!
You'll have to forgive me if that's the norm, though. In this backwoods hillbilly part of Wisconsin, we don't pay more than $6-$7 for a burger, and prices that high are at Perkins or Crapplebees.......Red Robin fell out of the sky and I was so excited, until I saw their prices and realized that it would only be an every once in a while treat.

I agree - overpriced for a burger
But look at what they are using to build the burger . . .the point is to use expensive high quality items
I have a list of things that would be fun once in my life is money were no object.
Sitting first row up against the glass at a professional Hockey Game
Sitting in a box at a hockey game
Sitting in a box at a Football game
Sitting on the 50 yard line at a Football Game
Eating a $50 Kobe burger (which is the same beef as the London burger)
Order a magnum of Dom Perigon
Fly to the coast for a Fresh Seafood Meal and back home
Hire a limo to drive to and pick up from a sporting event
I guess being a touch of a Foodie I can understand the logic . . .it isn't really that they expect this to be a "hot" item on the menu . . .just that they have the ability to offer the ultimate in designer high quality high cost

Isn't Wagyu beef meat that comes from cattle that are corn fed, sake fed, massaged and generally cossetted?
Still, it's a cow, not a precious stone.

Wagyu and Kobe are the same thing
What you feed a cow and how you treat a cow/ how much muscle they are allowed to develop effect the texture and taste of the beef.

I don't even have one in my area and pretty much the only one in state is in Fort Meyers...and that's 2 hours from me!!! The worst part is how I always see their commercials on TV....same with Sonic's.

Yeah, but Red Robin is delicious and usually worth the price. They did, however, raise their price of a soda to over 2$ but it's unlimited refills (and I tend to drink enough soda to fill a two liter bottle anyways)
Hell, they make my burgers rare! That's a rarity anymore!

Looks like someone screwed up on the price conversion from Pounds to US Dollars... Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,368901,00.html) is reporting the price as US $200... but they still don't mention the price in Pounds, so I can't verify the currency conversion myself.
They also mention that (a portion of) the proceeds from each burger sold will be going to help a London Children's charity... how thoughtful of them.

I read rest of the article and I wouldn't mind having the handbag. And since you're paying so damn much the strap can also be a necklace. Now thats classy. Or even better $60,000 ice cream. I mean who doesn't want ice cream made from ice at the top of mount killimajaro

Yes, everyone else is reporting $200 for the burger.
Also, Kobe beef and Wagyu beef have a slight difference. Kobe beef is Wagyu beef grown in the Kobe Prefecture in Japan.
It's like Champagne and sparkling wine ... if it sparkles and the grapes were grown in Champagne, it's Champagne. Otherwise, it's sparkling wine.

Well according to The Sun rag (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1304787.ece) it's £95, so it's not $200, it's a mere $190!

very good point it is much more then I would shell out for a burger but given the high end ingredients i'm not sure i'd say it was over priced maybe it's the fact that it's a burger that is throwing people off
[QUOTE]Sitting first row up against the glass at a professional Hockey Game
As someone who has seen many many NHL games in his life I suggest that you dont waste your money sitting first row is arguably the worst seat in the house sure the checks with be awesome but you will never see the puck or 90% of the action choose the 4th or 5th row from the ice and sit behind and to the side of the goalie you'll pay just as much and you'll have an awesome view of the game

That amount would buy me... almost 38 Cheeseburgers at Five Guys Burgers and Fries (at $4.89 each, and their names are deceptive... a Cheeseburger at their establishment is a DOUBLE with 2 patties... for a 1-patty burger, you order a Little Cheeseburger! ;))
So, yeah... STILL too rich for my blood!

It's good; and I don't think that RR's prices are that much different from Friday's or the other chains. I think growing up in an affluent area while being poor gave me a bit of a complex :o
By that; I mean I'm cheap because I grew up with limited means. But when I see $10-12 for a burger I don't bat an eye.
As for Sonic, the closest ones to me are in a rural part of Delaware and on the eastern shore of Virginia; two really poor areas compared to the DC/Baltimore metro. And I think their food is crap so you're not missing much.

When I visited the school I'm starting at in the fall, one of my first questions was, "So are there any Sonics here?"
I LOVE them. The burgers, the shakes, the slushies....just plain love it. Really good place to stop for a snack too. (mmmm, cheddar bites...)
Dammit. I think I'm gonna have to make a run now.

Let's investigate the ingredients.........
The $400* burger is made of Wagyu beef, white truffles, Pata Negra ham slices, Cristal onion straws, Modena balsamic vinegar, pink Himalayan rock salt, organic white wine and shallot infused mayonnaise and served on an Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun.
Wagyu Beef-Never understood how a Japanese cow somehow is so superior to an American cow. Do the Japanese feed it golden barley, single scotch malt with a suite for a stall?
white truffles Truffles are fungi. Shite that grows in warm, dark places.
Pata Negra ham slices Ham comes from the ass of a pig. Don't get me wrong, I love ham, but ham is ham, and putting some fruity Italian name in front of it doesn't impress me in the least.
Cristal onion straws Because is has the word "Cristal" in it make the onions more valuable than any other kind. Maybe if they were somehow fused in gold they would be more valuable, but lets not get silly.
Modena balsamic vinegar Vinegar. The same stuff that you can buy on the shelf for 1.99 a bottle. Balsamic is just a word with no meaning.
pink Himalayan rock salt Salt is salt no matter where it comes from. Does this salt come from some backcountry in Nepal? Please. I guess the salt for the balsamic, gold plated, Sumatran potato wedges comes from the Dead Sea blessed by God Hisself.
organic white wine and shallot infused mayonnaise This is basic mayonnaise with a mixture of white wine (the "organic" word is meaningless because all wine is made organically). Shallots are onions basically.
Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun. So, did the saffron come from Iran? All the way from Iran? And again, truffles are fungus, and somehow it gets dusted on the bread, bread that is as cheap and is of a good as quality as the cheapo Whoppers for much less.
If you are soooooooooo rich to spend $400 dollars on a hamburger, you have mince meat for brains. Really.
Eat the rich!

And I thought Red Robbin and their $10-$12 burgers were outrageously priced!
The burgers at The Bar are $10.50. Before anyone freaks out, remember two things: 1. This is Key West, where everything is expensive. 2. These ARE the best burgers in town, and are a nice whopping 10 oz. Definitely not overpriced!
Sitting on the 50 yard line at a Football Game
Been there, done that, will do it again.....repeatedly.
Well, let me rephrase that. I have sat in seats that are in front of the 50 yard line. I have never actually sat ON the 50 yard line. The officials might object to that during the game!

I never even thought of Japan as having beef, since there's a constant brouhaha here about exporting meat from Nebraska cattle over there. Interesting.
I haven't eaten at RR in ages. Last time I went it was pretty good- the portions are huge, so I made a few meals out of it.
I don't know that I've ever had a burger at Sonic. Usually I just get a slush there, maybe a corn dog or tater tots if I'm feeling adventurous.
For fast food burgers, I tend to stick to Runza or a little place called Don & Millie's. Their burgers actually taste like burgers.
Living in NE has left me with some pretty high expectations for beef. :D

Senor - I think I get the gist of what your post was . . .all these items can be bought for less or why would you want to eat them.
To Foodies these items tend to be of the lets have a moment to just be in awe of them variety.
The beef - it has to do with the diet and the care - these cows get regular massages to help keep the "meat" tender they also have a very specific diet - there is a difference
Modena Basalmic Vinegar - with age and quality there is a difference - the $1.99 variety just won't cut it when cooking at this level
The term organic - has to do with how it is grown - lack of chemicals used. To use the term their are standard, regulations, and rules that must be met. Again for some there is a difference. Some people with health issues really do watch what and how much outside chemical(s) go into their system.
true saffron (which this is) is grown in very few places . . .supply and demand. You want the real thing/ high quality. It has a very limited supply for the whole world. . . it is gonna cost you.
to have the money and be willing to spend it on that quality of food - the best of the best. I don't blame them, I don't see anything wrong with their brains or logic.
*** note: the burger is not $400 it isn't even actually $200 US dollars. A portion of the proceeds are going to charity. How many have heard of people going to $1,000 and up a plate charity dinners? And most of the time at those events you are served mass prepared banquet food. True it may be qualtiy . . .but for the most part those evenings are all about how cheap can we be with creating an air of high class so that we can continue to get these "donations" each year.

Hola!
I just find it obscene to pay $400 for a $10 hamburger. If you want to throw away your money, throw it to a charity or give it to someone in true need.
Senor
no offense to the grill people at burger king
but if im going to pay $400 for a burger, its going to be cooked by Gordon Ramsey or Masaharu Morimoto
Hell two people could eat at Ramesy's resturant for that....
Im not leaving even a $185 burger to be put together by an over worked, under paid worker in a fast food "resturant" with absolutely no professional training...
and no the rapping video on youtube does not count
