So, a friend of mine dropped his phone down a storm drain. There you have it, completely his fault the phone is gone and he fully admits it.
However he just had two back surgeries, and as a result of the price tag on health care even after insurance, is not really in a good spot to buy a new phone... and he works from home in online media, so it's job-critical that he have a phone and that it be able to receive email.
He's been with T-Mobile for 8 years and is on a shared plan with his father. His contract is close to up for renewal and he'd be perfectly happy to sign an extension for another year if it gets him a new phone.
Any folks in the phone industry know of any promotions going on currently or any tips on getting a free/cheap phone, maybe by asking to get his contract renewed early and get the once a year free phone with renewal thing? His father wants to call up and be all SC about it, threaten to switch companies and yell and scream until he gets what he wants because he's in "my kid is in pain from surgery and now in financial trouble, must be angry protective bear-man" mode, but Dan has so far convinced him that it is not worth making some rep's day sucky in the faint hopes of finding a sup spineless enough to hand over a free phone to shut angry bear-man up.
So in hopes of saving a perfectly nice rep from one SC, is there a nice way to go about this that Dan can suggest to his father? Dan now has no phone at all (no landline) so the SC-ish father will have to handle this, but Dan can tell him by email to ask for such and such a promotion or say such and such a thing, or Dan can go in personally to one of the retail T-Mobile stores if there's something that can be done there.
Obviously he'll just have to suck it up and buy a phone if need be, but figured I'd ask the fine folks here first and see if I can 1) prevent an SC and 2) Help my pal out, as he's helped me out of many a tight spot.
