As some of you know, I've been doing karaoke for roughly 14 years now. Lately, I've been entering contests, without a whole lot of luck. The reasons varied -- the one time, it was because the people who they picked as judges had their "favorites", and it wasn't the hard rockers like Yours Truly. I didn't even do anything real off the wall like Slayer, usually the song I did was classic rock, specifically "Tom Sawyer" by Rush.
The next contest, I thought I had it in the bag. I tied with first with someone else in the auditions, although I later found out she was a professional, and shouldn't have even been allowed in the contest. But that's another rant...
Unfortunately, when the actual contest took place, I came down with some nasty virus, and my voice was fried. I tried anyway, and failed miserably. I tried some warmup songs that were normally easy, and even those were pure agony. Somehow I managed to get thru the song for my contest, and came in fourth.
Right after that, I left for my beach trip, where I was still sick for the first couple days. I had no energy, and the first night, I was in bed by 9:30. Anyone who knows me and my nocturnal nature knows that's not like me. When I got back, I was pretty much better, and I found out there was another contest. Unfortunately, I still wasn't competely healed, and I didn't even place that time.
Since then, I've been working on getting my voice back. Apparently it finally paid off. I entered another contest. and placed first in the audition. Tonite was the actually contest, and this time I won! First prize, $100! I'm sure I'll piss it away before too long, but it was nice, for once, to leave a bar with more money than I came in with.
Go me! :D
