My computer has just had a major f*** you moment, where it lost my saved profile.
Including, but not limited to the following:
All saved pictures.
All program settings.
Some programs are no longer installed (though still on it).
All links.
All I know is i went to shut down before I left for work... And when I came back it was still shutting down.
When I reset it and switched it back:
It said something about an I/O error that did something that caused something to be unrecoverable.... Which isn't much to go on.. But i'm wildly hoping that someone out there will have some idea what it means.

Sounds like your hard drive could be failing. I'd back up anything that can't be reinstalled, like pictures, just to be safe. You were able to recover everything this time, but next time you might not be so lucky.

I'm hoping that it was just because I installed something a little too big for my computer to handle, or it caused it some other way... This being the Command and Conquer First Decade collection...
That said, I'm also scared to turn my computer off.

You don't turn off a computer. You only restart it when required for updates and installs. Turning off a computer just ain't right. It's like slapping your mom. Sometimes, you might wanna, and you might think it'll solve your problem, but it just makes things worse in the long run!

I'm a huge fan of the 'hibernate' feature Broomjockey...
It's great for my laptop, because it doesn't cut too much into the 30-min battery life it has haha.

I think MM hit the nail on the head. You'd be wise to backup/burn all your goodies. BTW, how old is the hardrive in your system?

It's not that old. Around 6/7 months. It's still under warranty, so i can always use that option if it really gets bad... But it would be a major hassle for me, as it's pretty much my tv, stereo, and information source, not to mention my entertainment centre...
If it does get bad, I think I'd seriously consider looking at a PC instead of another laptop.
EDIT: I'd back up my stuff in a flash, except I have around 9 days of music stored on it, so until I get the time and enough mp3 cds, i'll have to wait.

Get yourself an external HD. 320 gigs should do it ;)
