This is is crazy, I live in Michigan and right now it is snowing outside in October. We don't get snow usually until November or December. This is cool yet a reminder of how cold it will be.

Ha! I'm in Florida. I was wearing shorts and a halter top 2 days ago, and a t-shirt and capris yesterday. It's still in the high 80's, low 90's. It's getting cool at night though, so we may just have a "winter" this year!!
Snow would be pretty sweet though - it'd shut the state down haha.

Snow...ew. It'd take a lot of snow to shut the state down. A foot sure as hell isn't enough back home, I doubt it's much different in PA. At least now when it snows, I'll have an excuse to skip classes.

It'd take a whopping inch to shut Florida down. Our roads aren't made for it, and people don't know how to drive in it, nonetheless have the gear for it (unless they've been skiing or whatever, but still). Like you said, it'd be a stellar reason to miss class haha.

I can't remember the last time anything was shut down due to too much snow. -40 temps and below, or ice storms that leave everything under two feet of ice are about all that can faze us. BTW giraffe, halter-top and shorts? I hate you. I need to get my winter coat.

Let's see you put a tariff on THAT, Dubya!
That's the problem with living in a country that gets so cold-we'd hardy ever get snow days. And because I was only a five-minute walk away from the school, I'd have to go to school, even if it was shut down, and hang out with the teachers for a day. I remeber-distinctly-that my parents couldn't tell how cold it it was outside, because our thermometer only went down to -40. It was so cold, that the mercury just shrivelled up into the little ball. And yet, I went to school.
The last time I remember a day that classes were cancelled was when I was in grade six-it started out as a "regular" day (everyone was excited, because it was the last day of school before Christmas), but at about 10 or so, the temperture dropped, the wind picked up, and the snow started to fall. The radio was predicting a no-holds-barred blizzard, so the teachers let us go at noon. Looking back, I'm not sure if it was that bad a blizzard, I think that the teachers just wanted to start their Christmas break early. I do remember that the wind had blasted the snow into super-hard drifts-farmers were driving trucks and tractors over them, and the snow would still hold up.

One winter in Montpelier (VT) when we were living on the top floor of a house (converted into an apartment), there was a fly in the house. My mom proceeds to shoo it out the door...
The fly buzzes about two feet and then falls into the snow, dead. Oddest thing I'd ever seen...a fly freezing to death instantly.
My dad says they have snow on the Los Alamos ski basin already. No snow here, but we got a horrendous downpour all last night. Now it's about 60 degrees.

Are you kidding me? Lower than -40? That's crazy! Mercury freezes at -38.something C and -37.something F. Guess that's why they don't make those thermometers for less than -40...

It snowed here on Tuesday. It was pretty cold outside then it warmed up to probably 50 degrees. Yesterday was pretty nice out then we got a cold front come through in the evening. Now it's cold and very very very foggy out today. We have strange weather here.

Sure, Florida's great this time of year. Let's see how you handle 8 straight months of 90+ temps with high humidity and unpredictable rain and lightning though lol. Granted....Canada summers must be gorgeous, but I wouldn't even bother getting out of bed in the winter. I'd freeze outside - even in all the gear and all. I do have winter coat and snowpants from the Colorado trip in March (we saw snow AND 8-degree temps!!), but there's still only so much I can handle. We break out the sweatshirts down here when it hits 65-70, and whine profusely when it dips below 50. It's insane haha.

Yeah, my boss is heading home to Wisconsin today, and his wife said it's snowing there too. Really mad, it doesn't usually snow this early. Maybe it will snow in Kansas while I'm there...
My DH woke me up yesterday and told me it was snowing. I was like 'Wow. It's snowing in South Dakota. Who'da thunk that.' Don't wake me up 15 minutes before the alarm goes off and expect me to care what the weather is like. Besides, my brother up in Lead has had snow on the ground since the end of September.

..and people don't know how to drive in it...
You kidding? You gotta remember, in October, most of the snowbirds are all ready here. They remember how to drive in the snow, especially an inch. I haven't been in the snow in almost 10 years, but I know I could drive in it.
Wait, I forget. They may know how to drive in the snow... they just don't know how to drive, period.

People can't even drive in the snow in Wisconsin.
The first time each fall or winter we get an inch or two, the roads will be snarled with accidents and people sliding into the ditch.
I'm guilty of this myself. One time I was driving with my gf and it was snowing lightly, and I was going over a bridge and the road was sloped downhill, and I must've been going too fast, because the back end of my car fishtailed out, I overcorrected, and I ended up doing a 360.
Fortunately, I didn't hit anything.

People manage to forget how to drive in the snow during the course of the summer. Every year, after the first snow, traffic slows to a crawl. Not because they are being cautious, but because the emergency vehicles are blocking all the lanes.

we got our first snowfall today too. i live in wisconsin. it was pretty, but i will get sick of it.
im nervous about driving though. ive only driven in snow once, and that was in a Blazer, which feels safer than my Stratus. last year, fiancee and i were on our way home after a huge snowstorm, and slid through one stoplight, and stopped at another stoplight, sideways. we were able to stop right where we needed to, but we were sideways.

That's also why they don't make mercury thermometers anymore-sometimes, it just got too cold for them. Also, if people broke them, all sorts of fun things were inside! I'm not sure what they are made out of now, by I believe that it's a type of alcohol-but not the fun kind.
Also, if you think that was cold...
My mom-just after she got married to Dad-taught on an Native reservation. This was back in the early 70's. It was on the other side of a very major (read: wide) river-the North Saskatchewan River. In the summer, you could take the ferry across, but in the winter, you had to cross the ice. (Not really relavent to the story, but just fun facts to point out.) Anyway, the school board had the strict policy that there were to be no snow days-except if it got down to -60 F overnight. (No, I am not making this up-my mom his told this story often enough.) In this one particular tough winter, there were tow days where the overnight temperature dropped down to -58 F, and she had to go to school. She said that it was the worst commute in her life.

-58? We complain at +58!!!! Holy crap, I can't even imagine.
And yeah, Knightmare...people compare Florida drivers to NY drivers (no offense to anyone from NY)
My family is originally from the DC area. Before I was born, my mom and dad were driving along in their little red civic when they came to a T in the road. They were driving on the long part, and My dad decided he wanted to parallel park in the spot right in front of him (i.e. if he went straight, he'd wind up perpindicular to the curb...in the spot he wanted). It was icy, so what does he do? Pulls the e-brake, turns the wheel somehow, and winds up perfectly in the spot. I can only imagine the heart-attack he gave my mom when he did that. Probably couldn't try it again now if he wanted to, but....there's a story that came from it.

What I always love in the winter is people who blow past me in their big 4wd SUVs thinking that they are impervious to physics. I always get a great laugh out of it when I come driving up on them in the ditch ,in my 2wd pickup or my little fwd car.
Whats even better is when I stop and help pull them out with said 2wd truck. They just need to recall that while they may have 4wd all cars have 4wheel stopping.
Here in southern Ohio it hasnt snowed but it is cold wet and windy. I hate winter.

Heh, Floridians are such wimps when it comes to weather. It was in the 60s the other day, and I had my windows down while running errands. I think of that as my middle-finger salute to the colder weather :D
After getting stuck in two blizzards in the early 1990s, the cold doesn't bother me much. Neither did driving around in a car with no heater, and having the driver's window fall down...and snow coming in  I did get bothered when our furnace blew up in 2000...and we had several days of subzero temperature. Lemme tell you, it was coooooold!

Nope, Floridians aren't wimps about weather, just a little spoiled. Now Thais- Thais are wimps. If it drops below 25 degrees Celcius (so, high 70's Fahrenheit!) they start to complain about how cold it is and put on sweaters and/or coats. Of course, they're still wandering around in sandals, but they've got their coats on!

Ah yes...we call that Florida style. We wear flip flops whether it's 100 or 45. I'm not sure why....we own sneakers. We're just more comfy in flips I guess.

The snows just sort of melted when it hit the ground, but it's still snowing tonight, so this stuff will probably stick. I still doubt that'll be enough to do much with, but it's a start.

now this is why I love Nebraska, 120 degrees in the summer with high humidity, -30 in the winters with freak blizards and Ice storms, and idiots on the news spouting bits of wisdom like "I think the rest of the drivers should get out of the way for those of us with 4 wheel drive" the people with LESS traction need to move for the people who have it?
and if I'm not already off/at work I try not to go out for the first 24 hours after the first big snow because people either drive stupid, and ignore the fact that there's a sheet of Ice on the ground, or drive 10 miles per hour on the interstate
I really can't talk much, though, because the entrance to my neighborhood is right off a highway, so there's a mountain of plowed snow waiting for me when I get home from work, and I always try to break through it using momentum, but my 87 pontiac never won that fight, and I always wound up digging it out. This year there's a few more avenues of approach due to urban sprawl, I drive a 5-speed, and have a tow rope in my trunk, that drift won't get me without a fight!

I also can't stand snow. In my case, not only is it a pain to get around in, but living in PA like I currently do, people seem to go buck wild and run to the store to get milk, eggs, bread, and TP like it is the storm of the century. Even if it only an inch or two. And this is despite the fact that this is a northern state and snow is a regular occurrence EVERY winter!!! Also, the majority of Pennsylvanians who do this have lived here their entire lives!!!
And they do this literally EVERY TIME that snow falls or is in the forecast!!!
Pennsylvanians who do this should have to spend a winter or two in Minnesota, Montana, Canada, etc.. When they get back, they would think they were in Florida!:D

People do that down here too whenever it starts to sprinkle. But that's usually as bad as it gets, as it never snows and rarely rains. In fact, I've never experienced snow, kinda want to see it happen at least once.

Seeing it once is kind of cool, but dealing with it every year is a headache. Ice is tough to drive on, snow also, your windows get covered in snow, and I've had cases where my door froze shut. Like I said, snow is cool but it's a major pain.

You can thank the news media for that one. They tend to blow it all out of proportion....which tends to make quite a few people nervous about it. Because they do this *all* the time, I don't take them seriously. After all, these are the same folks who, in 1990-91, said we'd only get a "light dusting" of snow. Light dusting my ass--we ended up with over 3 feet, and couldn't get off our street for a week!
