My daughter's in pre-school for special education. She doesn't talk (well, she says "Mama" really really really really well, and she's now making more vocal sounds, but no actual words). Anyway, my daughter's teacher gave me some laminated cards with pictures on them (ex.: mil, water, watch tv, watch video, toast, etc.).

I put all the cards on magnetic adhesives. On the front of the fridge, for Kelly to see so she can choose are: "Help", "Milk", "Juice", "Water" and "Toast". This afternoon, when we got home from visiting my folks, Kelly wandered into the kitchen I was putting away some groceries, and she handed me the "milk" card. I said, "You want some milk?" and I poured her milk. Then a couple of minutes later, she handed me the "juice" card and again I said: "Do you want some juice?" so I poured her some juice. Then she picked off the "toast" card and studied it for a minute or so and then handed it to me, so I said: "You want toast?" and I made her a piece of toast (which she ate in its entirety).

She communicated with me! I was in shock for a few minutes. But. she. communicated. with. me! I am sooooooo excited! YAY KELLY!

Yay. :) If she's been relatively non-communicative until this stage, this is great news.

Aaaaaand she did it again this morning! She asked for milk! AGAIN! YAY me & Kelly! *dances* LOL

I know this might seem a little silly to some people, but having a 3-year-old daughter not communicate and suddenly have her communicating (albeit in a limited context), is really really really exciting. (At least for me).

This is not silly at all! That is one of the great things about being a parent is the interaction.

Have you made any more cards on your own? Maybe the park, or favorite movies or something?

If it isn't rude to ask, is she autistic?

It's moving in the right direction. I hope she continues to improve. :)

That's a good idea. Maybe cut out pictures from grocery ads or magazines for other foods, glue those to cards and write the word on the card ("apple" "grapes" "carrot" etc). Take photos of the playground, zoo entrance and other places she likes, and use those too.

Pro-gress!

Pro-gress!

Woot!!!!!

An apple a day..or a carrot ...or a pickle....

After you've got a bunch of letter/things on the fridge, try arranging them in alphabetical order.

I'm going to be going through my clip art on my computer this weekend and looking at magazines and stuff for other pictures. I can also at any time, as Kelly's teacher for more pictures.

I'm going to be making a little booklet (1 1/2" binder) with plastic dividers that I can put velcro on and put pictures of Kelly's favorite movies so she can tell me which one she wants to watch. (Right now, she's more interested in watching Season 1 of the Muppet Show instead of her Backyardigans episodes - go figure).

Thank you everyone for ya'll's show of support! You might hear from me from time to time saying that she requested *insert item here*. :) I get shivers every time she hands me a card.
