It's getting close to the time my boyfriend and I have to be out of our apartment. Well, we don't have to be out, but neither one of us are keen to stay in the place we're living at the moment. Nice building, crappy part of the city, and surrounded by construction that's going to go on for a few years. Not fun when my 6 block walk to work turned into a walk through construction site where gangs hang out at night or walk along the railroad tracks where gangs hang out at night, or walk a mile to get around, or take the bus. That, and we want a dog.
So, anyways. We want to move. We want to move into a place that allows dogs. Only problem is, any place that allows dogs around here is expensive. We have three options. 1) Buy a house. 2)Rent a Duplex 3) Move into an apartment that allows dogs. (No townhouses around us allow dogs).
Houses, as you all know, are expensive. Duplexes around here that I've been able to find are about 1,000-1,500 a month to rent. The apartments I've been able to find that allow dogs are about 900 for a 1 bedroom a month.
So..either way we look at this, we need a roomate ._. And wow, I've never realized how hard it was to find one who isn't either 1) doesn't have a job/doesn't want to move out of parent's house, or 2) has an SO who's a deadbeat loser that can't hold a job, abuses them, mooches off them, and the person won't put a stop to it, but without the deadbeat loser SO they'd be a perfect Roomate. Or 3) Says yes they want to, then no, yes/no/yes/no/yes.. *strangle*
Why is finding a roomate so hard? :(

Because people are dumb.
I'll live with you!... In spirit, since I'm in Canadaland. But I have three steady jobs, no SO and know how to make up my damned mind! I'm perfect! :p

Careful with that roomie thing with renting. We looked at (and I fell in love with) an adorable HUGE 2 bedroom that was part of a moded out mansion. Bedrooms were far enough apart that we thought we'd be able to get his friend as a roomie. Landlady said no way in heck. We've actually ran into that a few times and I have no idea why.
And back to your regularly scheduled programming. :)

I go to college at a school with a 4:1 girl to guy ratio. As a result, nearly all my friends here are girls. Makes finding people to live with pretty hard.
Good roomates are hard to find because honest, decent people are hard to find these days.
I feel for you.

Meh...roomates are okay.....
With a little Worcestershire sauce and a nice Merlot. :p

I've always lived with male roomies.

Must make finding dates that much easier, though.

Why?
As a guy who's lived with a few female roommates, 'tis because girls are a pain to live with. :p

I'm going to disagree with you, Broom.
I have lived with guys who were pains and girls who were pains, and guys who were great and girls who were great. It varied by individual, not gender.

I've always lived with male roomies.
Because a decent amount of females are uneasy about living with a guy. A lot of female's parents are uneasy with their precious daughter living with a guy too. Since we are still considered young, people are uneasy with the situation.
Must make finding dates that much easier, though.
You'd think so, but my major means I rarely see different people. I've had the same classes with the same people nearly every semester. Every now and then I have a gen. ed, but that's rare.

Greenday, what, you confine yourself to just your classes? You're never out and about on campus, in the Union, at the dorms? Seriously, dude, you're letting me down here!

If you note, I put a ":p" smiley at the end, denoting a joke.
Frankly, out of the two female roommates I've had, one was good, the other refused to acknowledge the circumstances and bend her expectations (I'd never lived away from home before, and she refused to actually ask me to do things, expecting me to be psychic about when things should be done). Out of the half-dozen+ male roomates I've had, all but 2 of them were pretty bad roommates for varying reasons. I did in fact note that I was the common denominator out of all this, and came to the conclusion it might actually be me that's the issue, so I refuse to have any room mates at all now.

Well, when your courseload consists of: Chemical Information, Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry Lab, Physical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry Lab, and Genetics, your amount of free time is considerably low. Normally, I eat about a meal a day. Two if I get a hot dog from the hot dog guy at lunch. I've been seriously tempted to turn the empty classroom on the fourth floor of the chem building into a bedroom.
So yea, I have some free time, but using it on meeting people is kinda rough.

I never claimed to be all that bright, ya know.
Frankly, I thought you were laughing at the idea of having female roommates, or something like that.
Don't mind me, I'll go have another beer now.....

I'm not saying go out of your way to meet people. I'm saying you are already in situations on a daily basis where you could and probably do meet people, other than all the people that are common to all your classes.
But whatever dude.

Nah, I meant it joking that women are pains. Just my bitter, lonely single side having a bit of a romp.
I've had room mates with the deadbeat SOs. I think that's in some ways worse than having the deadbeat as a roomie. It makes it so that someone you otherwise get along with has serious issues with you, since you have issues with someone they care about.

When I moved in with my college BFF (a lesbian) - that was a loooong talk with the parents. It actually worked out really well, when we had a big party we weren't stepping on each other's turf, as it were. :D
I had a guy roomie for a month (he just needed a place to stay for one semester of summer classes). It was fine - but then he was spending most of his free time at his girlfriend's house. The only problem was going into the bathroom after he showered and thinking 'hmm, smells like boy'.
My only roomate I've ever had was a guy. Three years older than me. My best friend, as I didn't have a female best friend.
My parents weren't worried about it, but were worried what everyone would think. Although I think you guys know me better than to have let that get in the way.
I really looked forward to having a slightly older male roomate because not only could he buy me alcohol, but I'd known him for a few years, knew he was clean and decent and never missed payments and was responsible. I had heard so many horror stories of girls living together and all that jazz....
Well if you remember right.....all my stories......things started out ok, then he got a girlfriend, moved nearly all of his stuff out but refused to get off the lease, refused to allow me to get a new roomate, at the same time refusing to pay his half of the rent and everything, excusing it because "I'm not here enough to need to pay" (yet he WOULD NOT get off the lease to legally remove him of the financial responsibility) and then when he'd get kicked out of his girlfriend's house he'd come back and make my friends leave or tell me I couldn't have friends over and he wanted quiet....blah blah blah.....I found a new place, and he tried to pin all final charges on me and demanded I refund him part of the security deposit.

When I moved out on my own I moved in with The SO. And two other guys and one other girl.
Then the SO and I moved away, moved back together and lived with his friend J, also a guy.
J flips out and goes a little crazy on us and moved back in with his parents.
Roommate R (duh, he's a guy, you all know him) moves in to hide from his psycho girlfriend. He's stayed here ever since.
I've only lived with one girl other then my Mom and we got along okay. The guys are more fun though.
And, no, I don't pester people to put the toilet seat back down. I'm smart enough to look before I plant my butt down. :D

Simple solution. Move to Scottsdale, Arizona. You can get a large 1 bedroom apt. for $650.00 per month which includes all utilities, plus you get a pool and hot tub, 3 laundry rooms and a gym w/ sauna. At least that's what it is in my apt. complex. :-)

psst... or you could move to Salt Lake... at least in central valley the equivalent would be about $50 a month less :p

What? I have lived in at least two apartment complexes in Scottsdale, thank you very much. If it is one of them, I would guess it is the first one....the place me and my friends all dubbed "Melrose Place."

Honestly, I would LOVE to move to Arizona. But my BF can't handle heat  If he could, he'd move to Alaska.
And I never understood why the toilet seat is such a big deal. It takes half a second to flip down. >.>

I like the seat AND the lid both put down, because otherwise the two men I live with would stink up the bathroom even WORSE than they do! Put the seat and lid down before the fumes escape... *GAG*

Well, lid down is different than seat down. There's various reasons for lid-down, like smell or so you don't drop anything in accidentally. Seat down is just women being lazy :p
