View Full Version : Sad news for my rotten-weiler.

My rottweiler has cancer. We discovered a tumor on her nose, but didn't know what it was until it got infected and split open. She's doing fine now, the tumor won't grow any bigger and she still has a chance of passing away peacefully of old age(she's 10). That's what I'm hoping for.

She's really slowing down, lately. I'm going to make a fleece lined raincoat for her so she can go out in the rain. I'll post pics when she gets it for Christmas this year.

My dad is trying to talk me into taking my rat terrier when my rottie passes. He's old too, but since he's a little dog, he's still really healthy. I don't know if I could, I'd be gald to take him for a long weekend, but I can't for the long term. I don't want him to die on me. I don't think I could take it.

Aw, poor thing. 10's pretty good for a bigger breed, though, isn't it? Give her a belly rub and some biscuits for me :)

Think of it like this: 10 is like a human in their 60's and 12 is like a human in their 80's. Bigger breeds are lucky if they make it to 13 or 14. While for smaller breeds, you would almost expect them to live to be that age.

That's what I thought. My mini-schnauzer lived to 15. Her predecessor (same breed) only lived to 10 (but I was only 4 when she died; they were both really my mom's dogs).

I'm sorry about your dog. It's always sad when they get old.

Give her some love from me and Daughter and Son and we'll keep her in our prayers.

Aw, hugs. I will go hug my rottie too.

Taking the other dog would not be a wise move. When a beloved pet dies on you, adopting another very old pet into the house is not a good plan. It will die on you relatively soon, not be too harsh about it, but let's face it, it's an old dog.

Grieve, and when ready, consider a new pup or young rescue dog for your household. Give the terrier lots of cuddles when visited, but I wouldn't take it in permanently.

Exactly my thoughts. When my bf and I finally get a house, I'm getting another rottie. Her name shall be Appolina, but Apple for short. I think dainty names for big dogs are cute.

Yeah, I have plans for another dog. I had the plans before I knew Sammy had cancer. I wish dogs had longer life spans...:(

Sorry to hear about your dog.

My dog passed on two years ago at the age of 15. He was a Kerry Blue Terrier. Very mild mannered dog and a good companion.

actually on dog age (i read this somewhere, or saw it on animal planet)
the first two years is like 25 human years, and every year after is about 3-4 some times 5 years so at 10 hes at most 65 minium 49.

I googled a few calculators and got anywhere from 53 to 66. The 66 came from a site that did it by dog weight, so this is probably more accurate, as bigger dogs do tend to have shorter life spans.

So I think it's safe to say she's in the 60+ bracket, anyway. And since one site had average age for Rotties at 9.8 years, she's already doing better than average.

I used to work with a guy who had a Rottie named Greta. She was very sweet :)
