I am happy to report that my father's visit went off without a hitch. I can't believe how much my father has mellowed out. I mean, he still drinks a lot, but he's not as brash or as blunt as he used to be. At least not towards me.

On the subject of my recovery - he asked me how long has it been now. I told him it will be four years at the end of January. He was drinking a beer at the time and pointed at it and asked if I ever even indulged in beer or drinks. I said that I don't. He then asked, "Does it bother you?" I told him it doesn't and he stated he was glad to hear it because he was worried that I would be uncomfortable if they were drinking around me.

All of his inquiries about my school or work were not judgmental or disapproving in nature as I thought they would be because they have been in the past.

I was glad to hear that he sees a doctor regularly. They (he and my stepmom) had gone to the doctor before they got on the plane. Dad drinks a lot and its nice to know he has bloodwork done. He looked old-er. He's got high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and tendenitis. He takes medication for all three and daily doses of vitamins. My friend told me that sometimes old age does for us what we can't do for ourselves. In my father's case, it has mellowed him out...considerably.

It's good to know that it went better than you expected.

Oftentimes our fears of what will happen in a given situation are worse than the reality of the situation once it finally comes to pass. I'm not saying you weren't warranted in your fears, mind you, but it's good to know that your father proved that he (at least now) is not as much of an insensitive prick as you feared he would be.
