*shaking fist*
I've spent the last few hours...and the last few days...going over the summaries and reviews of some of my favorite (and not so favorite) books.
Sometimes I wonder if these people actually read the book they are complaining about (and some obviously have NOT, since they can't get any of the details right to bitch about!)...
As of now, I'm on page 22 of 137 pages of reviews for the first book of a 6 part series.
::sigh::

Don't bother!
Some people will like, others won't. Because we all have different tastes, it's usually not worth reading someone else's review - unless they've indicated some tastes similar to yours elsewhere, so you've got a valid comparison.

Is that what you do if/when you can't sleep?

I hear ya. I can deal with negative reviews on a fav book just fine. I don't like a lot of books other people like (*coughcoughTwilightgagcough*) and am capable of expressing said dislike in an articulate fashion, and many of the customers on Amazon are the same.
But there are some real idiots out there. Complaining because you thought a book should have more slash and hack action (a complaint on one of my favorite books, World War Z) is a bit silly--take the book for what the author intended it to be. Now, if it doesn't work even as the author intended, by all means, write a negative review! But whining about it is just silly.
And some of those commenters...geez, can they evven READ? They sure as hell can't write a coherent sentence! :)

It's even better when they give the item a negative review because of issues with the seller. I didn't realize this at first so I would sometimes avoid products on Amazon based on the rating. Then I actually started reading the reviews that gave low marks and realized what was up. But yeah, it's hard to trust the book reviews. Some of the books I loved got poor marks while some terrible ones (*cough Twilight cough*) got good reviews.

Pretty much. Last week, I went through most of my book collection.
In case you're wondering, I'm working on the Outlander series at the moment.

When I can't sleep I clean my toilet. I also clean my shower stall. If it gets really bad, I will sneak into the 3rd bedroom on the top floor of my house and alphabetize my husband's comic book collection.
I might try the Amazon reviews instead. :D Thanks for the tip!

I would like to extend an invitation for you to come visit for a few days in the near future. It's a bit noisy here, being on the highway and all, and the couch is a bit small, but we would love to have some company.....

Actually, someone in one of the 1370+ reviews made mention of one...

Oh yes, the reviews can be atrocious. I wrote a review for a biography of a certain silent actress, and then read through the other reviews. They were hilarious and pathetic.
This particular book was extensively researched: the author had been given unrestricted access to the actress' personal paperwork, including psychiatric files, by her family. He interviewed hundreds of people who had known or worked with her, and wrote a wonderful biography that many who had known her said was extremely accurate.
And yet these reviewers were completely trashing the book, stating how inaccurate it was because they'd read somewhere she'd had sex with so-and-so and they KNOW it's true so obviously the author was lying. One reviewer even questioned the diagnosis of schizophrenia she'd been given---she'd gone to what was the most advanced, most prestigious psychiatric clinic in the US at that time for an extended stay---and her diagnosis was considered definitive. This particular reviewer announced that she was in fact bipolar, not schizophrenic: he could tell just by reading about her.
