In just under three years, I'll be hitting the big four-oh. This doesn't distress me. I was talking to an old friend yesterday, though, and we started to wonder where our youths went. More specifically, our appetites.

There used to be a place near him that sold huge feasts for small amounts of money. Many was the night he could go there and gorge himself, as did his friends, and they'd have room for desserts. On the way home, they'd stop off for a bag of chips. I've got similar tales - I can still out-eat most people I know, but if you shaved a nearly two decades off me, I could have eaten twice as much as I can now and felt no ill effects.

So, that youth thing. Where the hades did it go?

I'm about the same age as you, and I was also one of those who could eat constantly, and never put on weight. One of my roommates used to always tell me, "Enjoy it while you can, because some day, you're going to blow up like a balloon!"

Now that it's 18 years and 60 lbs later, I'm going to kick his ass if I ever meet him again...

Oh, I put on weight. It's just that I now feel full while doing so...

That sucks! I have that problem now at 30. It's not fun. I used to be able to eat and eat and eat and not feel bad. Now I swear I eat half a bowl of...well, anything, and I'm full. :(

I'm fast approaching the big 4-0 myself (right there behind MadMike and Raps) and I couldn't tell you where that youth thing went to.

Frankly, I never met Youth. I guess having adult-sized responsibility heaped upon you while you're still in elementary school has that effect on a person. I guess Youth was intimidated by me and shied away.

I had Youth once...for about a week. Don't ask me what year it was. I was a serious, non-rebellious kid, ditto uni student, then i met DH and spent every waking hour withhim. i went from being Studious Kid to Boring Girlfriend in about 20 minutes, and now I'm Stressed Mum.

I think I'm due a teenage rebellion about....now. I'm going for my very first makeover next week.

A few years ago I heard a comedian remark about the old guys and their sports cars, "Nice car, sorry about your penis."

I love that line.

Hey, you're allowed to have those even when you get older. Of course, then it's called a "midlife crisis." ;)

You guys (and gals) - all of you - just made the day of a perpetually-confused, career-changing, youth-deprived, head-finally-clear-of-bottom-region 36-year-old who understands and sympathizes completely. :D Except for the formerly-skinny folk - I'll have to take your word for it. ;)

Tease me about my age and I'll hit you with my cane! :p

Yeah, I used to be skinny, twenty, energetic and able to eat as much as I wanted. Now I'm 38, overweight, have to watch the diet and I get worn out by my own kid. Enjoy your teens and twenties while you have them; they fly by at mach speed and are gone forever...

Just wait until you're in your mid-50's with an 8yo, bad knees, a hip that needs replacing, and also over-weight. At one time I had hoped to retire at 60 now it's looking like I can finally retire about 10 minutes before I die. I've always said that youth is wasted on the young, I know I could enjoy it a lot more than any of my kids.
