So, New Years is at my house this year for my family (We rotate homes every year) and its actually never been here before so Im a lil excited.

I need ideas for appetizer type things to have out. Im not having full out dinner. Just snacks and booze.

Any ideas? I know Ive seen those little rolled and cut sandwich thingys at BJ's for $9.99 a big box.

Im not opposed to homemade items, just so long as the ingredients dont cost me an arm and a leg.

Taco Bar, maybe. Easy for you and everyone can make what they want.

heee.... :D

Coincidently, I have been in search of two things today; "OAMC" recipes (Once a month cooking) and --For a Crowd meals.

Spinach Artichoke dip and toasted bread FTW.

ETA: you can find this at walmart already made for about eight bucks... might want some extra bread though..

Sweet and sour meatballs. :D easy, simple to prepare and a gigantic hit.

I second the meatballs idea. Everyone always loves those -- you can get big bags in the frozen section of most stores or wholesale clubs, get a sweet sauce to go with them and put little toothpicks by them.

Chips and salsa or cheese dip or guac is always good. Also, maybe try peanut butter chocolate balls for something sweet -- always good. PM me if you want the recipe.

Other ideas?

Fried chicken nuggets (can be homemade pretty cheap or bought frozen)
Pasta bar
Taquitos (I think that's how they're spelled -- Daddy loves em)
cheese and crackers
sandwich trays so people can make sandwiches if they want
cheese straws or balls (PM me for recipe -- very easy VERY good)
sesame sticks (PM for recipe)
taco dip
ham biscuits

I'll try to think of more and I'll bounce it off my sister in law (she's a caterer).

Light on food suggests light on booze - alcohol on an empty (or even lightly filled) stomach will affect the drinkers more.

Just one of those thought things.

Herb pretzels. HUGE hit at my house.

1/4 cup butter
1/2 tsp. dill
1/2 tsp parsley flakes
1/4 tsp celery salt
1/4 tsp onion salt

10 oz bag of pretzels.

Melt butter, stir in seasonings. Dribble over pretzels (in a bowl, not the bag! )
toss to coat and microwave on full power for 3 minutes - stir each minute.

Very inexpensive to make and very good.

This.

Also, just some veggies and cheap dip is always a good fix.

If it is just munchies . . . make sure that people know that. This way they can eat a full meal before arriving and imbibing.

The Canberry Ginger Royal Kir that I had posted about (and don't know how to link it in) was a hit. (Cranberry syrup added to Champagne. I froze cranberries to help keep the drink cold)

If you plan to offer coffee . . .you might want to make some coffee a day ahead and frezee into cubes . . .that way people who would enjoy iced coffee can have it without watering down their cup of coffee.

I also made a ham swiss roll up that I learned about on Rachel Ray.
Buy deforst puff pastry . . .let defrost, takes about 40-45 min
unfold and place a row of deli ham -can be Oscar Mayer/ packaged-
then a row of swiss
roll up - you can place into your freezer if you want to make ahead
slice into 1 inch thick slices . . .place on cookie sheet (use foil or parchment paper for easier clean up)
bake per puff pastry insturctions - mine was 400 degrees for 15 min (took 20)
put some grainy mustard in a bowl for dipping.

I am thinking about trying roast beef and cheese with horseradish in it for another time.

Make sure you have something non alcoholic for the designated drivers, and phone numbers for taxi companies handy night of.

Cheers!!!!

If there's a Giant Eagle (or Jyunt Iggle) see if you can get a ring sandwich. Those usually go over well at my parents' place. Everyone loves the "Big Sandwich" :)
