My pet hamster "Mouse" just died.
He was named Mouse by my son who, at almost 1, couldn't tell the difference between a hamster and a mouse, so it stuck.
I noticed last week that he was on his way out and knew that his time was near. I'd been at my parents' house for a few days and just got back home tonight. I went to check on him and his breathing was a bit labored. So I picked him up and just held him and petted him for a while, he was very still.
I decided to clean his cage and then that's when I saw that he was gasping for air. So I held him in my hands until his very last breath. It was as though he waited for me to get home so that I could say goodbye. For that I was grateful.
I know he was only a hamster, but I feel like all my pets are family. Anyway, thanks for the shoulders.
