I just found out that McGriff's kidneys are staring to go bad  It was caught early (a few days ago), but mom says he's not really eating. He's done that before when one of us was out of town for awhile but started eating normally when both of us were home, I'm hoping this is one of those cases. The vet wants us to give him fluids (subcutaneous with a syringe) daily for a week, then every other day, then he'll recheck things. Apparently he's had mild kidney issues a few years ago which corrected themselves.

I know it's one of those inevitable things (he's almost 19 in human years), but it was just a bit of a shock to hear. He did have some GI issues before I left town, but we didn't think that was related.

Eep, that's no good, I have a cat that's 18 and he's starting to get a bit feeble himself, it's sad when your kitty is getting on in years, I hope he gets better soon! *hugs Dreamstalker*

Bitty (the cat in my avatar) died about 2 years ago from renal failure.

She got really really lethargic, smelled like pee, and was just blah. I took her to the doctor, and they gave her some fluids and tried to get her back up...I took her home after that and had our g'bye time.

But a few years BEFORE that she'd had kidney issues too. Change to mushy food, so it's more moist, ask if the dry food needs to get changed, and find out if there's anything else you can do for your friend.

I miss her. She was the bestest cat in the whole universe.

He seems okay now; mom said he was eating today. Now he's curled up on the sofa sleeping (followed me in the computer room). The subcutaneous fluid-giving a bit more complex than the normal insulin shots (mom's going to show me how to do it when she gets home). We used to have one of those kitty water fountains which he liked; I'm pondering getting another one. He likes the new wet food which is good; the vet prescribed baby food when he was throwing up which he loves. I guess no more high-protein stuff like eggs.

He looks a tad thin (apparently he lost 3 pounds while I was gone--eek) and didn't come running like he used to when I came in the door, but he did show interest in treats and catnip. he's also on something for his joints now (chondroitin?).
