View Full Version : All this over a ball of yarn?!?

Bit of a backstory: Last year I made a seriously bitchin' black scarf for myself, wore it ONCE, then lost it when I left it behind in a Target dressing room. Didn't even have the damn thing for 24 hours. Of course, I cried, pouted, then bought one off the clearance rack of some crap ass department store.

That Christmas, my dear parents bought me an entire friggin' box of that same black yarn. Seriously, there were about 7 or 8 skeins in that thing! They "didn't know how many it would take to make the same scarf" (answer: 2 skeins at most, LOL) but it was the sweetest gesture at the time. :)

Throughout the year, I practiced different things and made projects for all sorts of people, leaving just enough (or so I thought) for me to start another for myself. I wanted it super thick and fluffy so I used some super fat needles and knitted it with that black yarn and a skein of sparkly black glitterspun. SO cute!

After Christmas dinner, I'm out of yarn but it's only half done (if that), so the next day we went out to the craft stores the next day looking for the same stuff.

This same yarn has been in stock all freakin' year, btw. It's the most popular type of the post popular brand and I've never *not* seen it all over... so of course, when I need it, it's sold out. :(

I go to another craft store. Gone!

I suck it up and go to 2 Walmarts. None to be had!

Ugh. I suck it up, set it aside, and start finding other things to do in the meanwhile. I work within 5-10 minutes of all these places, so I figure I'll keep checking back.

Which I do.

Practically every day.

NOTHING.

Until Today! Finally! I literally skipped out of the store and jumped up and down in excitement. I don't even know why I stopped to post this, I should be knitting!

It doesn't take much to make me happy, I guess.

LOL, thanks!

I'm serious though, for an avid knitter (beginning knitter, but avid nonetheless) it's pretty sad to be making projects all the time when you're wearing a dumb store bought piece of crap because it's cold and your half finished project is mocking you from it's basket because your yarn is on back order x infinity. :(

Also, I feel like an ass for laughing so much at Christmas because I swore up and down that I'd never in my *lifetime* be able to use up all that yarn. I'm such a dumbass! :o

I've had this same issue with yarn.

It was the Grape Ivy from Red Heart.

I bought some to make an afghan (or something) for Becks to match her lilac bedding.

There was never a time when it was not available.

Then it became discontinued.

Even the company didn't have it available any more.

I've FINALLY been able to track some down on eBay. I  eBay.

I understand COMPLETELY. I'm a craft person -- knitting, cross stitch, all kinds of things. If I'm working on a project, I always try to get at LEAST twice what I think it will take to finish the project because, no matter what, no matter that every time you're in the store there are overflowing BOXES of the stuff, the moment you run out and need it for a project -- even just one skein, there will be NONE ANYWHERE!! Always happens like that.

And there are a few colors / kinds I use all the time, so I always make sure I have plenty around and when I see it, I buy it. Can't ever have too much -- it will all get used!

Wow JAM, you never mentioned this to me. I thought we were friends...
Now, when are you going to knit me a scarf? :p

My girlfriend and I were talking about this knit sweater that her mom got her. She was describing it and I ask her, "who knits?" And she replied back to me "prolly no one"

I guess she was wrong.

Knitting is quite the thing, these days...

My roommate's friend visited a couple weeks ago and whenever we were just hanging in the living room she was knitting.

I'm self-taught to this point (although I'm going to take a class to do socks this spring). Find a good "learn to knit" book and supplement with www.knittinghelp.com - easy!

Anyone else here on Ravelry? I'm Rowan619 there - friend me!

I do have to say, that when my mom was talking about getting a house at the beach again this year, I did a happy dance thinking I could get more of this gorgeous hand-dyed yarn I got last year, but couldn't afford enough to make something fabulous out of it.
