I have a problem that I hope my techie friends at CS can help me with.
In short, I am a dumbass. I decided to upgrade to IE 7 and I hate it. I mean, I hate it with a passion. I instantly missed my IE 6 and now I want it back. I couldn't reinstall IE 6 because an newer version had already been installed, IE 7
Still following me?
I decided that I'd install Firefox, which I've never used before but it is rather nifty I have to say. I installed Firefox so I could uninstall IE 7 and reinstall IE 6. When I went to my Add/Remove programs in Windows I got a prompt saying that because Firefox was installed after IE 7 was installed then Firefox could be affected.
Still with me?
So, that's where I stopped. What do I do? I just want my IE 6 back.
I know that there's a strong Firefox fanclub, but even though it's a nifty program and I've been ok with it for the 12 hours that I've had it, I just want my IE 6 back.
Can anyone help me? Please? I'll give cookies...and brownies...

It's not possible that the removal of IE could affect Firefox. The only thing that could change is the sharing of bookmarks, if you did that during the Firefox installation. Otherwise, you're safe.

And as an avid FireFox user and lover, I'd suggest staying with Firefox for security reasons. IE is pretty unsafe for a lot of things. I only use IE for my Hotmail, because that's what MSN Messenger opens it with :(.

Why in God's name do you want IE6 back? That browser was nothing but trouble for me.
I have installed IE7, which is much better than IE6, but FF is still the best.

As Canadagirl said, the only problem you would really have is with bookmarks.

But give FF a try for a while. I bet you'll get hooked on it.

IE6 is teh suck

I usually look at the content on the pages, not the browser. I don't want the browser overshadowing what I want to read or see.

You should be able to uninstall IE7 without any trouble. The warning about Firefox is probably just Microsoft's way of scaring you into changing your mind. But, if you're not keeping Firefox anyway, why not uninstall that first and then uninstall IE7?

IE7 is a huge step forward in terms of features and security, though, so I would strongly recommend that you try to get used to it. Not only will your computer be more secure, but you'll be doing the entire Internet a favor by reducing the chances that your computer gets turned into a "zombie" that does a hacker's bidding. Other than the new interface, it works pretty much exactly the same as the old version, so once you get used to where buttons and menus are, you should feel right at home.

If you still decide to can it, you'd better disable automatic updates too, because MS is going to push IE7 as a "high-priority" update starting November 1.

Uninstall firefox, then uninstall IE7. Then after that nifty reboot, reinstall firefox and you'll have IE6 and firefox.

I made the FF jump last year. Too many annoyances with IE. No more popups, no more annoying little ads, nada. Me likey Firefox :)

Thanks for everyone who gave me advice! :D
And I still think I'v a dumbass....
I uninstalled IE 7 and when my laptop restarted I still had the default browser, IE 6. Doh! I didn't know that my laptop would do that. I'm so not computer literate at all.
I've kept FireFox. I want to work with it a little bit more. I think I just need to get used to it, so I'm going to use for a while. I think I'm just used to IE.

Personally, I like IE7.

As for all the people who have problems with pop-up and other issues with IE6. All that can be "turn-off" quite easily, I didn't have pop-up problems or "maliware" problems with IE6. Firefox isn't bullet-proof either ;)

I tried FF and didn't like it. I use Maxthon. It also has tabbed pages and a good pop-up blocker. It will also use your IE favorites and it will clean up after itself if you tell it to do so.
If you like the way IE 6 operates then you'll like Maxthon.

For some reason when I read this an analogy popped into my head. To me that's like saying, "I just like to travel from point A to point B. I don't want the car I'm in to overshadow that need." And then, after saying that, consider IE to be like driving a junker that breaks down every ten miles and Firefox to be the smooth, comfortable car that actually makes the trip.

I say this simply because, for me, IE has always broken down horribly. It has been the source of so many near computer deaths for me that I refuse to use it unless I have to. (Example: scion.com hates my firefox and, being as I'm car browsing, I briefly allow my firewall to let me use IE so I can view my car options!)

I tried FF for a couple of days. It didn't really seem any better to me. It wasn't any different in speed, and I wasn't really seeing any differences other than in how they did things. Tabbed browsing didn't impress me.

Eventually, I went back to what I know. The only time it really fell over for me was when malware got on and ad-aware got rid easily enough.

Just a shrug from me.

I'm not much of a fan of Microsoft, but I have to admit that I'm impressed with IE 7. I think it's great on XP, and even better on Vista.

That said, I dread the days when MS starts pushing it to users. I work in internet tech support, I'm well aware that a lot of my callers will press any button presented to them... so they'll wind up with IE 7 without quite knowing what they were agreeing to. And then...

Caller: Why did you make the internet look different?
Me: Huh?
Caller: I know cable's an illegal monopoly and I don't have any choices, but that doesn't give you the right to make the whole internet look different. And you didn't even ask me.
Me: Huh?
Caller: Change it back.
Me: Huh?
Caller: Change it back now. And how am I going to be compensated? Or do I have to consult with my lawyer?
Me: Huh?
Caller: Are you stupid or something?
Me: Huh?

I let my brother download the IE 7 onto the laptop recently. The next day, he uninstalled and had IE 6 back on. Said he was having too much trouble w/some of his racing websites not being viewed correctly. Didn't ask, didn't care:shrug:

I second the vote for Firefox. I started using it last fall after hearing several CS'rs discuss it on the Off Topic forum. I find it much more stable than IE and it doesn't crash or create havoc w/the OS.:)

I get along fine with Netscape and it's not the gaping security hole IE is. I do like tabs, since I dislike having more windows open than necessary.
