I guess I'll metion my stupid moment that turned out to be the cause of all the problems I've been having with my computer.
Some of you may know about it, I mentioned it in the chat room a few times. It worked great for the first few months after I built it, but then it started acting up last summer. It would randomly blue screen, and sometimes it would slow down or freeze. More recently, it started to hang on the Windows splash screen.
I must have tried replacing just about every part in the thing, and nothing helped. Replacing the memory seemed to work at first, but then it started acting up again. I ended up returning most of what I bought, except for the memory, which the manufacturer was nice enough to put in those stupid plastic packages that are impossible to open without destroying the package, and the motherboard, because I felt it was too much trouble to switch out again.
The only thing left was the processor, which I had ordered Mondy night and arrived yesterday evening (Newegg rocks!) As with the old processor, the bottom of the heatsink had a plastic cover on it, but it was on there snugly enough that it looked like it was part of the processor. At some point when I was looking at it, I discovered that the cover slid off quite easily, and then it suddenly dawned on me that it was supposed to be taken off.
Yes, I had installed the old processor with the stupid plastic cover over the heatsink. I mentioned what I did on another message board, asking if that could have caused the problems I had been having, but I was so embarrassed, I posted anon. From the responses I got, not only was this the likely cause, I'm lucky the plastic didn't melt all over the processor. Amazingly, the cover wasn't even slightly melted, and I checked the temps several times, and it was never even close to overheating. But the new processor, minus the plastic cover, is making all the difference in the world.
I suppose I could have tried the old processor again once I removed the cover, but I had a nice new one, which is faster and a dual core.
Assuming I didn't damage the old processor, I figure I can put it, and the old motherboard into my wife's computer, although I'll need to get a new video card, and probably some RAM. My wife probably won't notice much difference, since all she really does is surf, but my son sometimes plays his games on it, and I'm sure he'd notice the difference in speed.
Speaking of him, once he finds out the bone-headed thing I did, he's not going to let me live it down.

I should mention the bout of model railroad stupidity I encountered the other night...
A little background for you all. On real railroads, where tracks meet, there's either a crossing, or a switch with moveable points (usually called a 'turnout'). These points allow trains to move from one set of rails to another. In model form, the points can be either moved (thrown) by hand, or by a machine. Since I like how the machines work, I've been equipping most turnouts with them. Usually, it goes pretty well--pull up the turnout, cut the hole for the switch rod (which is connected to the machine under the table), screw the machine to the table, wire it, and you're done.
However, one night, I spent the better part of 3 hours wiring up one of those damn machines. Even though it was wired correctly (or so I thought!), it wouldn't work! Flipping the switch did nothing--the panel lights worked, but the machine didn't. After some serious poking and prodding with the voltmeter, I found out what happened.
When I spliced the machine's wiring into the bus (basically a pair of wires running the length of the train table), I'd cut it into the wrong one! On my train table, I have a pair of buses--one for the track power, and the other for the switch machines.
What was happening, is that the switch machine bus is *always* powered; whereas, the track power one isn't. The power in that one sometimes reverses direction, or shuts off entirely when running trains. At the time, the track power was off--no *wonder* the machine didn't work!
3 freaking hours to figure that one out :ashamed:

I just remembered one from a couple weeks ago.
There's a fitness center in the building where I work. It only costs $60 a year. Can't beat that. A lot of places charge more than that a month. I really should use it more, maybe I could get rid of this damn beer gut.
Anyway, I went in to use it one night, and there was a woman also using it. I finished my workout before she did, grabbed my ID badge, and made my way to the locker room. When I tried to scan it, the door wouldn't unlock for me. Tried it again, still no go. Tried it several more times, and then finally gave up and went to the security desk and had one of the guards let me in.
Once I got in, I realized my key wasn't attached to my badge like it usually was. (I started bringing in a lock to put in the locker, after some lowlife decided to help himself to the contents of my wallet a few years back.) Oh great, I thought to myself, I must have locked the key in the locker. How am I going to get my clothes and my keys and get back home?
Before I bothered the guards again, I figured I'd go back to the fitness center to make sure the key didn't fall off while I was in there. When I got there, the woman who was there with me was still there. I also noticed an ID badge with a key attached to it that looked very much like mine.
At that point, I realized I had never even looked at the ID badge in my hand. I flipped it over to look at the picture, and discovered that I had apparently not only changed gender, but color as well. In other words, I grabbed the woman's badge by mistake. No wonder it wouldn't let me in the men's locker room. I swapped that one for the right one, and got in just fine.
I also decided to be nice and tell the guards what had happened, just so this poor woman wouldn't get questioned about her repeated attempts to get into the men's locker room.

ok where to start.
lack of sleep and use of beer should be banned. let me point that out.
the other night i had spent about 4 hours sleeping in two days, don't know why just unable to sleep.
had someone tell me i should take something for it and all i could say was "huh"
brain froze completely unable to comprehend what the hell they just said. then a few beers later i looked at them and asked "what do you suggest i take?"
to little to late they had no clue what i was talking about. so i just sit there going duh did i imagine that.
what moments
