So my company launched a new phone last week and it took hackers a whopping 4 days to hack the operating system.

So, how did they do it?

This is even better than classic, this is epic.

(I don't know if that is an epic fail or win, though).

Epic fail for the company, epic win for the hackers. That.... Wow..

True but you really have to think - someone had to have the right mindset to try that, sure, eventually someone would but this is an old school "hacker" who got it - none of these new wave wannabees who like to change websites.

Hehe... The hacker probably though "If I were the phone and the phone were a SNES game, what would I do.... Oh! Cheat code!"

:lol:

I don't know which is more impressive. The fact that it took 4 days to do it, or the fact that the setup for finding was basically:

"Meh, this will probably never work, but good for a laugh."
<inputs code>
<code works>
"It worked? Holy ****!":lol:

Coulda been a 6 year old just poking at it, but it does sound like an old school console game key combo.

Hehe. Almost always within a week, a device is hacked. Doesn't take long, does it.

Sometimes I think these companies deliberately make it easy for these devices to be hacked.

You figure:

1) It's free extensive testing
2) It's free advertising - now a few mote people will want it because of this
3) It alows more people to make more applications for it, thereofre more people want it.

They just make people think its hard so that those who do figure it out can feel proud of themselves.

I wonder when we'll have our first open-source (i.e. Linux) based "smart" phone?

It *is*. It's the Konami code. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konami_Code)

Which means there was a geek involved in the device's development somewhere. But also honestly makes it seem intentional to me rather than a "hack" of any sort.

Actually, that wiki page mentions the phone in question. ^^

Contra, 30 guys!

And I needed almost every single one of them to beat that game.

Draggar, good to know we work for the some company. I'm soooo going to have to try that when I go back to work tomorrow. ;)

Of course, I'm the bad tech who did exactly what they told us not to do as soon as I got my hands on it. "Don't take the back off"? Yeah, right. I'm a tech, I have to see the inside. I didn't take it apart, but I did want to see the battery compartment and see what was under there.
