I went out to the parking lot after shopping and went to my wife's car to put it up front. It's a red '96 Cavalier and I went to open up the trunk to find a huge stroller with the word "Jeep" on it. My first thought was why in the hell did she just buy a used stroller after I just took out the other big stroller she had in the trunk??? Then I kinda stood there and thought that this cant be her car. I looked into the windows and it looked like it except there were two car-seats in the back seat instead of one. The necklase from the rearview mirror was no there. It was then that I finally realized it wasnt her car. Then why did her keys open up the other car's trunk??? Weird indeed.

Well what year's yours? I've used my 79 pinto key to open a early 90s crown vic and my wife's 91 tempo ignition key to open a early 00s crown vic door. How is that posible? Its because there are only so many ways they can cut a key, that and I got lucky :-) .

But seriously the locks may have been worn enough that any key would have popped them I've had a car like that before too.

Wow, I could save some members a service call and ask if they are around anyone else with a similiar key or something to try before the locksmith gets there.

We have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier, two-door.

Honda Civics, I think, are notorious for being able to use one key for different cars.

I'm sure we can all tell a story or two about a tow truck taking the wrong car, because the key fit.

::worried about my pretty little Cav now::

my brother and a freind of his both had plymouth acclaims of the same year and could open eachother's doors, but it didn't work in the ignition.

I know that there's 2 different types of dealer keys, one that opens the doors of all cars by one maker of a 5 year span and one that works for doors and ignitions

lmao,

I have a black 2000 Z24, I love it.

I was parked at a local grocery store and upon leaving, I was in such a zone with what was on my mind, I clicked "UNLOCK" Opened the door, set in my case of soda and bag of goodies, sat down and went.....wait...what the? I don't have seat covers on my seats. It was at that moment that I realized, somebody with the exact same model and color parked right next to me.

I was so :o .

Please don't.

That sucks for the locksmith when they get to a site and the person is gone. Hubby has that happen to him a lot. People think nothing of calling a locksmith and then still screwing around with it to get into the car. He's out the gas and time, when all someone had to do was pick up the phone and say "Sorry, we don't need you now."

Funny, so do I, 2000 Black Z24. I wonder what the odds are that our keys work on eachother's cars.

if yours has less mileage and more options, lets try it. ;)

Only about 80500 miles on it. Power windows, except the light inside the car above the seats doesn't work...

Or ask if they have a brick.:D

Supposedly the newer electronic keys (like on the Prius, where you don't even have to pull the key out of your pocket) are going to make it impossible to do this trick.
