A few weeks ago I had a tooth break, which didn't hurt as much as shocked the heck out of me. Well, I had root canal earlier this year, so my insurance is shot for the year, but it doesn't hurt, so it can wait till the New Year when our insurance will once again pick up some of the cost, right?

WRONG! It started hurting like I could not believe the other day. The pain wasn't going away and actually was getting worse. It was so bad that I was nearly in tears.

My husband insists that I don't wait, that I go to the dentist, we will pay for it ourselves if it means that I'm not in pain anymore. He is sweet that way.

I go to the dentist today (when did they get a good looking dentist?) ;) and he tells me I need a root canal.

I ask him what the heck is going on with my teeth, since I brush at least twice a day and I floss properly. He tells me the fillings I have from childhood have weakened my teeth. Oh joy. :(

He gave me prescriptions for Percoset (I knew he was cool right then) for the pain and a prescription for antibiotics.

Monday afternoon I go in for root canal, which is fine as long as they give me lots and lots of Novocain.

Ah man, I know it has to hurt. I hope you get to feeling better really soon. This reminds me of a friend of my husbands. He had a cavity and a really bad toothache. He was afraid of going to the dentist and of what he would do, so he started smoking weed and trying to numb the pain with whiskey. Well, after awhile it stopped working. He finally got up the courage to go and what do you think they had to do, a root canal. The dentist told him that if he would have came in earlier, then he wouldn't have to go through as much. Both me and my husband kept telling him to go in but he was nothing but a big baby. He would call us up and cry on the phone that it hurt.

I know that there is nothing that you could do to prevent the tooth from breaking, but I am glad it is fixable.

I have never had a tooth ache or a cavity in my life, so I don't know what I would do with a toothache. I can't even imagine the pain but I know that you are hurthing, and I am glad that he gave you something to make it managable.

I've never had to have a root canal, thank god, but I went to the dentist not too long ago because one of my teeth had become sensitive to heat (never a good sign). He took some scans, and told me I need 8 fillings. :jawdrop: What had happened was that because I had braces for a while, I couldn't floss properly and the plaque had built up between my teeth and caused cavities. Stuff like that is always fun when you have a morbid fear of the dentist.

Hope all goes well for you. :)

Crazyredhead, you never had a cavity? I hate you! Okay, not really. I just envy you. :p

I use to fear the dentist horribly, because of bad dentists in the past and them not using enough Novocain.

My dentist now has no problem giving me more Novocain if I need it. Someone is always watching to see if I indicate that I need more. I love him for that.

Zombi, I had braces for awhile too and still have sensitivity where they where put on.

I told my husband that I can see why some people don't go to the dentist, not only are there some bad dentists, but it's very expensive to go, even with insurance.

I had to have several root canals a couple of years ago. 14 ish years of neglect will cause that

All goes well apart from one tooth. Dentist cant find one of the roots, and refers me to a specialist with super nifty xray equipment and other toys. Much poking later it turns out that tooth is missing a canal, and this was interesting enough to have a few people come in and see it, before carrying out the rest of the fix.

I have a broken front tooth, an incisor between the right canine and front tooth. Needless to say I don't smile much anymore. I broke it a few years ago, and never had the insurance to get it fixed, nor the out-of-pocket money. Thankfully, it doesn't hurt, but it definitely needs to be removed.

I want to smile again. I am very self conscious about it. I even talk with my top lip over my teeth (you know what I mean) so it doesn't show. To get it fixed, it needs to be pulled and then I get a bridge. It's too far gone to get it shaved to a point and then get a cap (correct dental terminology?).

I also need a root canal on one of my molars. Joy.

It seems that as I get older, my teeth are getting weaker. I also broke a molar a few years ago, and had it pulled.

And to top it all off, my wisdom teeth are coming in; one has been pulled, one is coming in normally, another needs to be pulled because it's actually perpendicular to the other teeth and extremely close to the nerve, and the last one is of the "We'll see what it's going to do" type.

I had braces for awhile too and still have sensitivity where they where put on.

Braces suck - I still have glue left on my teeth six months later. I mentioned it to them when I went back for a checkup soon after having them taken off, and their answer was to try and scrape it off with one of those pointy tools. Not to be rude, Ms. Dental Hygenist, but get that pointy thing the FUCK away from my enamel! :jawdrop: Plus, I had a nasty experience with a dentist a few years ago, and I can't stand to have them poking around in my mouth (Panadeine Forte is goood. So is Penethrox ;)). So having someone trying to scrape glue off my teeth when I can't even stand to scrape a tooth with my nail - BAD.
Yeah, my teeth are straighter than they were, but I can really do without all the other crap.

I have that beat...I still have some glue left 30 years later.

And thanks to inheriting soft enamel from my father, I now have 13 crowns, and fillings in between all of my front teeth from the braces. I visit the dentist every 3 months for a cleaning and fluoride treatment.

Dental insurance? what's that?? When I needed to, my dentist allowed me to make payments of $100-200 per month. I'm gonna miss him when he retires!

Oh man. This gives me a bad feeling. I was at the dentist a week ago to have three old fillings replaced. Then I had to go back because one of the areas hurt, like maybe my bite was off. So, he filed it down more and it seemed better. But now it seems messed up again, like there's something deeper that's wrong. I'm going to call Monday. Stupid silver fillings.

You have lots of sympathy from me. Let us know how it goes.

Sorry to hear baout your pain. I don't like going to the dentist. Actually I take that back I loathe going to the dentist and would actually have to toss a coin as to going to the dentist or getting a prostate exam. Thanks to having weak and sensitive teeth I really really hate having my teeth messed with.

At least they make sure I am good and numb ever since I tried to rip the tie off the doctor while screaming loud enough to be heard in the waiting room (actually described as more like wailing like a wounded banshee by my wife) when I got my first filling this summer. And the only reason I got a filling was because I am running out of teeth and want to keep at least a few. (Between fights, accidents and general neglect as well as being a registered chocoholic I've lost a few teeth over the years.)

One thing I am not happy about is the insurance HMO I am with forced me to switch doctors as I don't have the pocket cash to go to the one I've been going to for the past 15 years. So I am a bit concerned and may just have to save up the money to pay out of pocket for my normal doctor.

I need a dentist myself... I have a broken tooth that doesn't hurt but is troublesome anyway. No excuses... I have good dental insurance and I live half a block away from the dentist's office. (Although, honestly, I'm nervous about going back there... she had a personal ad online and I tried to hit on her.)

I've had three root canals. The first was the worst. The actual root canal itself was easy... the nerve had died and I didn't even need Novocaine. But things were so far out of control that the specialist ultimately had to cut through the gum and attack it from above. That was unpleasant (although after it was over, I was still coherent enough to say, "That was fun. Can we do another one?")

The other two weren't so bad... except that the dentist remarked that if she had go up another size on root cleaners (I'm sure they have a proper name), she'd have to call a veterinary supply store and get some made for horses. It's true... I have huge roots. I once had to have a rear tooth pulled and the dentist practically passed out from the effort. "F**k," he said when it was done. "That f*****g tooth didn't f*****g want to give up."

While we're on the subject, the worst experience I ever had with a dentist was when I had my wisdom teeth cut out. I knew that people said stupid stuff under anesthesia, so I resolved to think of nothing but differential calculus so that would be what I'd babble about. Unfortunately, the day before the event, a friend of mine said, "Not only is the doctor a very handsome man, he's got the bluest eyes I've ever seen."

The next day, I was there thinking about differential calculus as I was going under... but at last possible moment, I noticed two things... One, he was a very handsome man. Two, he really did have the bluest eyes ever.

I am certain that in the fog of sodium pentathol, I told him about it at every available opportunity.

Getting my wisdom teeth out, was um, interesting. I'd had a serious problem with the "knockout juice" about a month before for an unrelated surgery. When my wisdom teeth had to come out, I wasn't allowed to get knocked totally out. All I got was a local. Now that sucked. I didn't feel much pain, but I saw a bit more than I wanted to. I got to see everything going into and coming out of my mouth. It sucked!

But, after a few hours, the pink elephants started flying around, and I went to sleep. Or at least tried to. I don't remember much after that, other than my father trying to change the gauze. Most times, it was easy. The last time, one of the stitches got caught in the gauze. No sooner had he pulled on it...than I hit him and knocked him across the room  He was like "that must have hurt." Uh, no shit, Sherlock!

That's about the worst of it. Having braces sucked, but not like that. On second though, I had to have some teeth pulled before I got braces.

But, at least I didn't get cavities, unlike my brothers that had several each. It's not that I do more brushing, but my teeth simply don't corrode. Why? According to my dentist, saliva is naturally acidic. Mine is just the opposite. It's not without problems though--it tends to "scale" and that crap has to get scraped off.

Me too - all four wisdom teeth, and 3 others. They were all done at the same time, and under a general anaesthetic, thank god. But the surgeon wouldn't let me keep my wisdom teeth, the bastard. They're my teeth! I grew them! Now give them to me!

I didn't get my wisdom teeth back either, but then, they were in pieces because they were rather impacted by the time mine got removed, so they had to chisel away at them. Yum. I looked like a bloody chipmunk for awhile after that, I was so swollen.

The only good thing about getting my wisdom teeth out...was the milkshakes. Even a week or so later, I was still pretty messed up and couldn't exactly eat "regular" food without pain.

Baby food - it's not just for babies any more! ;)
My mouth was bloody sore, but at least the food was good. All the custard and jelly I could eat...:D

My wisdom teeth were easy... the next day I ate a steak. When I went back to the have the stitches removed, the doctor said, "there's nothing here for me to do. You've chewed them out already."

My tonsils were another story. They promised me all the ice cream I wanted, which was half my motivation for agreeing to have them removed... what they didn't tell me was that I wouldn't want any. It took almost a month before I could eat without misery.

Well, I went and had the root canal done today. My little guy went with me for a few minutes, until my husband got back from work and picked him up. I was already back in the chair and a woman came back said that a man was there to pick my little guy up, was it okay. I told her it depended on who that man was, since I wasn't just going to let my little guy go without knowing for sure it was my husband. So, he came back and got my little guy.

My husband told me that she wasn't going to let him back there and told him to wait in the waiting room. He told me he waited knowning that there was no way I would let my little guy out of my sight without knowing for sure who was there to get him.

After my little guy left and the Novocain started taking affect the dentist came in and said I shouldn't feel a thing with all the Novocain I was given. Well, he had to give me more, which he did and made sure I wasn't feeling any pain while he was working.

My tooth is fixed now and I only have slight discomfort from the work that was done on it, but at least it's fixed and the dentist gave me as much Novocain as I needed.

I had a dentist appointment last week for tooth decay in one of my rear molars. It was like the only spot in my mouth that floss simply couldn't reach. The dentist drilled my tooth only for a couple of minutes before doing the filling. He said it only took a short time because my tooth was so decayed that it was soft and just pulverized as he drilled. :(

The appointment I have tommorow is to fix fillings I got as a child on two bottom teeth. I grind my teeth, a lot apparently. The fillings in two bottom teeth are grinded away to the nerve. My teeth were becomming very sensitive to everything. My dentist is putting in white fillings and covering the nerve.

Sigh. I brush, floss and rinse twice a day. I swear I do!

My father is my Dentist and my boss. When I was younger , around 10, I had a exam at the orthodontist office and my dad was told that in order to get braces I needed to have 7 teeth removed. I had two sets up upper canines on each side so basically on the top gum I had four corner teeth (children and adult teeth) instead of 2. The 2 baby ones had to come out along with 5 other teeth. Nothing beats having to get 7 teeth pulled out by your own father. I am the BIGGEST wimp when it comes to shots and needed like 5 or something and he wouldnt wait for my mom to come to the office and hold my hand.

I'm the one here that should have dental problems. I have the worst brushing habits of anyone in the world. I love sweets and sometimes I go days without brushing (yuck). I maybe brush once a day, but I have no plak (sp.) and my roots are long and the enamel is hard. My dentist loves my teeth. I could use a bleaching though (coffee doens't help much).

http://www.createphpbb.com/phpbb/images/smiles/uhohhide.gif I am not trying to brag, just that karma is going to come around one day and really bite me hard in the gums, and there is no one to blame but myself.

So, if I were to have a bad toothache one day, I would become a really big baby and cry and bitch about it constantly.

I am not afraid of the dentist that I have. I have been going to him for 8 years. If I have to change I hope I don't get a really sucky one. I have never had an experience that would make me scared or loath the dentist. I guess I am just lucky. I feel for everyone who has gotten a bad dentist...
