Last night, my friend was driving us back from some late-night grocery shopping. We were going down the main street which is two lanes both ways; we were in the left lane going 5 over the speed limit. About 70 yards ahead in the right lane we notice an SUV breaking for what looked like no reason.
After we pass them the SUV gets behind us and after 20 seconds they turn on their brights. We're in a well populated area with street lamps; to call brights unnecessary would be an understatement. The SUV proceeded to follow us for a mile and a half, even when my friend made a last minute left. They stopped when he turned right into our neighborhood.
I still have no idea who they were, or why they followed us with their brights?

Because they're jacaksses that like attempting to blind other drivers?
I have no idea.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.....vehicles need to come with automatic brights that turn on only when it's super dark, and dim themselves when they sense other traffic around, because most people are too effing stupid to use them manually.
I see so many people driving around town with their brights on in town at night on my way to work. It drives me insane, it's not even that dark with all the streetlights!

Brights within city limits are supposedly illegal here unless you're on the interstate with nobody visible in the oncoming lanes >_> I've seen some morons who have them on *during the day*...

Then, of course, there are the morons who DON'T have their lights on when they should - often people in grey cars that blend in to the road.

bit off topic, kinda, but I had an ex girlfriend in highschool that I drove around with from time to time. I always dreaded having her drive because she wasn't all that good, but had no idea how to use her lights. she had her brights on and after 5 cars flashed her, obviously signaling her to turn them down, she flips out "WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP FLASHING THEIR BRIGHTS AT ME! IT'S SO ANNOYING!" so i calmly turn to her and look at her dash... "uh... I think it's because you have your brights on and they can't see" she pauses... turns them down and just says "oh"
I had a friend in school, who obviously skipped the part of the written driver's test where it says brights in town are illegal.....she would get so scared and would be convinced that some areas were so dark, she'd drive all around town at night with her brights on. It was annoying.

I don't think cars should be doing more things that people are took fucking lazy to do for themselves. People are detached enough from their cars as it is. I mean there are cars that parallel park, there are cars that warn you if you are too close to a car in front of you, etc. I think some of this stuff makes us less safe because people care even less about their surroundings.

.she would get so scared and would be convinced that some areas were so dark, she'd drive all around town at night with her brights on.I can kinda understand having them on (where there is NO oncoming traffic) in areas where the lighting is poor or nonexistent, as long as you revert to normal lights once the conditions improve. Here, the only place with lighting that bad are (a) "bad" areas of town where the cops don't go, and (b) the disgustingly rich areas of town (as in, the ones that make Doctor's Row look like a slum). The latter, in particular, is notorious for not having street lights at all, or else havign had them changed to those amber lights that illuminate only a tiny area. No house lights on, either...And they wonder why burglars like to rob them >_>

...in the rain...
I once counted 52 cars in the 13 mile drive from my parents' house to Store2, in the rain, with no lights on.
