View Full Version : Tell me if i'm just being bitchy

OK, I've learned in the past several months that it's totally worth the extra $400 just to have my own place.
I live in a guest house. It's basically one big house sectioned off into rooms. The kitchen and bathrooms are public use. The living room (so-called "public area") constantly is a mess. I know who's responsible. I never hang out out there because I don't want to be a part of it.
So a few weeks ago, our landlord issues a memo that there will be a "special cleaning crew" to clean up the living room, and if they have to do it again, they'll charge us for it, or raise our rent.
So it's a mess again. Just like last time.
WTFH
You're in JAPAN. You know, where your mother ISN'T AROUND TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOU. Learn to pick up after your drunken butts! (I was going to use another word there, but I'm not totally sure what the board's policy on language is, so I'll take the safe route)
I'm thinking I'm going to cover my bases. They're fine guys and all, but when I told them to clean it up they just ignored me and retreated to their rooms. I'm going to email my landlord and tell them that, despite my best efforts, I can't keep the living room clean, and my stupid neighbors aren't doing their part.
I've single-handedly cleaned that room 3 times and it just keeps returning to this.
Am I wrong to squeal? Is it so wrong that I might want a clean living room? So I don't have to live in a squalid hellhole?

I see nothing wrong with covering your own ass. Why should you be forced to pay for the room to be cleaned when the other people are such big slobs? Their mess, their problem.

I agree. This isn't personal, it's business. When you are faced with paying for a problem you aren't causing, it's business. And anyway, what do you care what these inconsiderate slobs think? They don't care what you think, obviously.
I would tell the landlord exactly what you told us. Be polite, be business like, and be honest. Good luck.

People like that are *exactly* why I didn't want roommates (other than the furry four-legged meowing kind) when I moved out.

Thanks for your replies, all. I'm going to write an e-mail to the landlord, maybe not naming any names (yet), but more asking them to clarify that the biweekly cleaning crew is not a replacement for mommy. They clean the sinks and the showers, and vacuum the floor (which they cannot do currently because there's so much crap on it).
I don't understand it. When I complained to the messy ones first about it, their first response was "let the cleaning ladies do it."
Serious DURRRR:headscratch: moment there. Huh? They're getting paid to throw away trash when you could have done that within a 2 meter walking distance? Screw you.
Actually I've made a point that next time I clean up the living room, I'm lifting anything of value I find. (I've already taken the liberty to grab a couple of manga novels that were left there the last time:devil:).

Crap like this is why I didn't get alone with my roommates for the short time I had them. I lived on campus for a while, then moved back home and stayed there until I got married.

yeah I'm definitely living alone next time.
Update
The landlord called me. They stopped by the house while I was out to check out the damage and mess. Needless to say, they didn't like it. I fingered two guys in this (if you take a look at my short blog reports so far, you'll know who they are. Link in the signature.), and they said that they'd call them and see what new information they could get.
Basically the landlord sees me as the innocent one who's sick of taking care of other people's crap.
Heh. Here's what the Aussie tells me now on MSN (I don't think he's gotten the idea that I've talked about him to the landlord yet):
Him: man wheres [sic] all the partyt [sic] people
Him: the quality in naka itabashi [sic] (one word, not two)
Him: has goirn [sic] down
wow, 4 mistakes. He must be drunk already. Not even 5pm yet. And he hasn't caught the hint yet that maybe the quality is down BECAUSE YOU WON'T CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR PARTIES

See, it's crap like that which makes me determined to never be a cleaning lady. Ever. It is the job of the cleaning lady to keep the place clean. It is your job to keep the place tidy so that they can clean. Biiig difference.
(I don't mean "you" as in you personally, Cedophile, it's aimed at the idiot who made that comment. :))

I hear that. I worked for a cleaning company for six months in college- I had a lot of thankless jobs in college, made me want to graduate ASAP. But moving on, I swore I'd never do it again. My co-workers made fun of me for insisting that I wear rubber gloves when I cleaned bathrooms- there's just nothing as nauseating as walking in, getting ready to get started and finding a bunch of pubes on the shower floor and somebody forgot to flush. :puke: Looking back, I'm amazed I made it as long as I did, but that was when I was living away from home and had to pay my own rent. Suddenly living at with the parents seemed pretty damn luxurious.

I can totally relate to your situation, so I don't think you're being bitchy, you're just covering your ass. I use to have a roomie, but I moved out as soon as I could afford it, because she was disgusting. It's more money, but definitely worth it. Hopefully your landlord will kick them out and let you stay behind!

Man I really feel sorry for the cleaning staff though. People are expecting them to pull off magic acts to get the place clean.
Seriously, once, they had the "special cleaning crew" come in to clean up the whole place. They confiscated all the personal belongings in the living room and kitchen. And then the tenants who lost stuff (one had about $500 in CD's in the living room. Real bright to leave it there, wasn't it?) had the nerve to bitch and moan about it.
Don't think they weren't well warned about this. There was a notice posted in the public areas for about a week explaining that this exact thing would happen.
And the stuff is out there again. THIS IS INSANITY! Learn from your mistakes and stop doing stupid things! CLEAN!
