so last night, i wake up, like i normally do about 50 times during a night. im laying there trying to go back to sleep, when i start hearing a scratching noise. i sit up, and look at the bedroom door. there isn't anybody there. but i hear the scratching noise coming from the door. my cat is on the end of the bed, and i know he hears it cause he is standing ujp staring at the door as well. i look at the foot of the bed to see if the dog is laying on the floor kicking at the door. nope. no animals there.

it was extremely weird. to let you guys know how it sounded, i want you to pick up something that you can scratch that will make a nice little scratching sound. imagine your a dog, and you are digging a hole. you know how dogs dig with both paws? use your hands like that and scratch(if anybody asks, jsut tell them some crazy lady is telling you to do it). thats not the sound i heard. now...imagine you are a cat(this will be an easy one for most here). imagine that you are following a laser pointer across the floor, and are scratching, trying to get it. you know how usually, they make one scratch at it, and then a few seconds later, they make another scratch at it? nope...not the sound. now....imagine you are human....and have a really bad itch, and scratch like you are itching it. you know how you are moving your hand really fast and making a different noise than the rest? that is the noise i heard.

no, we have no trees near enough to scratch the house. with the snow that fell last night, i don't think i would have heard an animal on the roof. its just really weird, because i get one of my cats attention by making that scratching sound. its really cute cause he drops whatever he is doing to watch me. so to hear it like that last night creeped me out. it sounded like somebody was standing at the door, running their nails back and forth.

i have no idea wht it was. they say this house is haunted. but i don't know by who. i have heard before somebody open the door downstairs, and walk upstairs, but nobody was there. that happened a couple times. scared the crap out of me. i think whoever this ghost is, has been observing me with the cat and decided to tease me like i tease the cat. well, they did a great job of it. it got my attention real fast.

EDIT: i forgot to say that the door was wide open, and i was able to move to see both sides of the door. also, the noise was a constant scratch, as though it was jsut being scratched for a few minutes and then stopped

Isn't the "scratching noise" the first step of an demonic possession?

Don't read old catholic demonic possession stories. You'll never get back to sleep.

I don't believe in ghosts, certainly not scratching ones. Its entirely possible that you were dreaming you woke up - I do that all the time.

Maybe it was a demon mouse?

Or a live mouse. Mice make that wierd scratching noise. I had one behind my refrig doing that, it was one of those 'what the hell?' moments, so I grabbed a flashlight and saw a mouse working on the wall behind the frig.

So I'd start with the more obvious thought of mice in the house before going for the demonic ghostie thing.

Unless it's a demonic ghostie mouse. Any evil Terminex guys come to visit lately?

We get animals that crawl up in our floors all the time and they make some fascinating noises at all hours of the night. Might want to check and see if there's any holes in the underside of your floor.

we have an exterminator come by all the time. this scratching noise was too loud to be a mouse. i went to the end of the bed, and there was nothing at the door.

I get that scratching noise too...mainly because I don't let the kitty in my bedroom, and he wants to play while I'm sleeping ;)

*I'm somewhat allergic to pet dander, and don't want him pouncing on me at 3am :p

With the bad weather there could it have been a tree/bush outside rubbing against the wall?

Maybe the mice were in the wall or maybe above you in the ceiling. When I was a kid I used to lay awake at night listening to the mice running around in the ceiling above me. They used to make the funny scratching noise you were talking about not to mention the pitter patter of little feet. They used to do the same thing in the walls, too.
