So I just received my aunt's old laptop to "fix." I'm reinstalling windows 98se on it. It brings back so many memories from 4-5 years ago*tear*

You call them memories, I call them nightmares.
Freakin' scavenger hunts for drivers, strange interface, and god help you if you lose the driver diskette.

I loved my old computer with Windows 98 on it. Nothing ever went wrong with it. NOTHING. The equipment was old, so it wasn't that fast, but it always worked and was easy to use.

Actually, 98 wasn't that bad for an OS w/USB abilities.

Now if you really want a nightmare, try WindowsMe. Now that OS is horrible for installing any external USB peripherals. Not only did we have issues w/the USB lan adaptors when we had RoadRunner installed last year, but I've experienced issues w/the DSL router I had a few years ago and ended up having to install an Ethernet card on my brother's PC (router decided it didn't want to recognize the USB connection.)

And then there was the digital camera, that my PC didn't want to recognize. I think I recall having homicidal thoughts that evening toward the computer.

XP is really the way to go, but if you're having to use an older OS, just stick with 98.

Just .02 worth from a blonde, so take it as you will:p

98 was wonderfull. I still run it as my BitTorrent server on a Pentium 166 MMX computer.

You have to do the scavenger hunt for any OS you use. So far just about every major device company still put out Win98 drivers. I have no problem getting Win98 drivers. In fact it's harder to find linux drivers than Win98.

I still have 2 computers with Win98. Its just not worth "upgrading" to XP. On top of the issue of those 100s of Dos games that I would have to "fix" to work on XP  Every once in a while, I like to pull out a old game and play it. Like Ultima Underworld, the old Might and Magic, even some old FPS.

We still have my old PII 300mhz machine which runs Win 98. Right now it's the "other" computer so we don't fight over the internet. It works just fine for surfing. (We're geeks, I admit it.) And once our son gets a bit older, we'll start installing educational games on there for him. He's been interested in computers for a long time, but he's still in the "pound on the keyboard" stage.

I got SimTower to run, but it runs at like 100 miles a minute. Way too fast to be useful.

Try one of these...

Or CPUkiller

I had a program a few years back for that purpose...Just can't recall the name of it now.

CPUKiller does not sound like something I want to do to my baby! I built my machine from the ground up, and it has lasted me 4 years now, with no problems (other than me being lazy and not cleaning the heatsink out regulary causing some overheating). I really think I will cry when this computer dies, but hopefully it will live a much longer life.

CPUKiller is basically an program that does nothing but "burn" CPU cycle. (Not burning burn, but wasting time) Basically making the computer slowdown like you have 40+ programs running at the same time. It's a real pain to tweak and you have to tweak it for each game you're trying to slow down because each game is different.

There is another program out there called DOSBox, which basically emulates old DOS (it has a built in slow down). But the same problem exist, you have to tweak for each game.
