So not many people will probably know who I'm talking about, but I am a fan, and my husband is a HUGE fan.

Two years ago last night, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was killed in a club while performing with his band, Damageplan. Now, some of you may remember the band Pantera. Dime used to play guitar in that band. He was an amazing musician and person. He'd give a fan the shirt off his back. Someone called into the radio station I listen to last night, and told about how back in the day, when he went to a Pantera concert, he got thirsty. He was standing in line with some friends when Dime walked up, flashed a 50-dollar-bill, and announced that anybody with valid ID, he was buying them a beer. Said Dime was the nicest guy he'd ever hope to meet.

Two years ago, a young man walked onstage and shot Dime, killing him. It is not known for sure why, as a police officer shot and killed the young man as he was shooting up the club. In all, Dime, one of his close friends, and another fan who was trying to perform CPR on Dime were killed that night before the officer brought down the shooter.

This is something that effects me because it's a lot like John Lennon. Who also happened to of been killed on the same day, 24 years prior to the night Dime was killed. Both were senseless. All he was doing was trying to entertain people. Dime's death was even more senseless to me, because if that kid had a problem, he'd of talked to him about it. He was a great guy, and an amazing musician. He has been missed by fans all over. I'm not trying to compare Lennon to him, as these are two different genres of music. But to me, they are both amazing musicans that were taken from this world all too quickly.

:( rip dime. he truly was a great guy who always had or made time to talk to fans. i know i talked to him on several occasions, months or years apart, and he actually remembered who i was. and he was one hell of a guitar player.

From all I've heard and read, this was a rumor. He was actually silent I believe. Even more creepy. They still don't have a viable reason why he did it. His friends and employers were baffled. Just makes it even more sad I think.

tacohuman, you are truly blessed. I hope that his family and friends have been able to make peace with this tragedy, because I know many of us fans will never be able to.

thanks. my favorite memory of dime was going to see pantera one year on my birthday. i'd had a truly craptastic day, but they put on such an awesome show it made up for it. after the show, the band (dime and vinnie at least) was hanging out at the bar (it was a pretty small venue), and i walked up to him to thank him for turning such a crappy birthday around. he thanked me for being a fan, then shook my hand and bought me a drink.

a little over a year later, they came back through town and i saw them again. when i came up to say hi, he asked if my birthday was better that year, then bought me another drink :) i couldn't believe he actually remembered me.

like i said, great guy.

I'm listening to my playlist on shuffle right now and when I got to this thread Nickelback's "Side of a Bullet" came on. That is a song they wrote about Dimebag.
