View Full Version : Explain your av/sig

Another oldie but goodie; I've seen so many interesting/cool/funny sigs and avs round here, I feel the time is ripe for another one.
Av: Foamy the squirrel. This av was one of a few I saw; however, this is the only one that meets board specifics. It's still pretty funny tho, I think.
Sig: The pink line came from that "put your name in a random movie quote" link I posted in Check It Out. The navy blue line is off my new Dilbert calendar. I felt it summed up how I feel about my job sometimes. Not all the time, just on those bad days.

AV: stumbled upon it when hauntedheadnc posted a thread a while back to choose an avatar. This one didn't win but I absolutely loved it.
SIG: Scott Adams' explanation of the Dilbert Principle in his book Dilbert and the Way of the Weasel

And my sig is a line I saw on some other forum that I liked a lot. Kinda fits the way I think.:D

I've been working the MGB GT a bit too much...that's why I'm using their logo. As for the quote, Colin Chapman was the founder of Lotus. I was hoping to use a quote from Alec Issigonis (of Austin/Morris/Rover Mini fame) or one of the other MG/BMC designers, but I couldn't find any.

The avatar and the middle signature are based on my favorite hockey team, the Calgary Flames. The middle signature is their record this year, and the avatar is the "Flaming Horsehead" that they use for the front of their third jerseys and for the shoulder patches for their home and away jerseys.
The top quote is from one of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes strips, and I think it describes way too many people. (myself included :D )
The bottom quote is something that bugs me as a moderator. We ask in the site rules that you PM a mod/admin to nominate a War Story, yet many (not all) still call it out in the thread. You're not reading the signs, people. Sound familiar? ;)

Although I keep meaning to change it, my avatar is Jayne from "Firefly," wearing the cunning hat his mama made him. I like this avi because I'm forever having to explain to my fellow Yanks what a "toque" is.
Current sig line was gratefully borrowed from Counterjockey, and needs no explanation. :p
EDIT: Added to signature line...a great line from a so-so song by a great songwriter. Subject to change on a whim.

My av is from the poster from the movie "The Black Dahlia", and my sig is from a line Josh Hartnett has in that movie. I just really enjoyed that movie, so I thought I'd commemorate it. I'll probably be changing it soon, if I can find another movie I liked that much :)

The pic is a random train picture I took a few years back while out railfanning, not really related to my job or myself, just and easy way for me to find my posts on a board.
The sig is a line I copied from another persons' sig on another forum I visit, and I've since been told it's a permutaton of a joke told by comedian Frank Caliendo. Either way, it's funny!

Sig I chose because it seems that a lot of my more dense customers seem to think/do this...& a link to the music video for laughs ;)

My avatar is picture of Tony Romo, the man-child who currently plays quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.
My sig, "Long ashes..." is an expression used in a cigar smokers forum that I am a member of. The idea is that cigars should be smoked with long ashes. It just so happens that saying "Long ashes..." is now a way of ending all the posts on that forum, so I decided to do the same here.

I've changed my signature a few times since I started here roughly six years ago, but I've always kept the same avatar. His name is "Eddie" and is the mascot for the band Iron Maiden. He didn't have a full name at first, but on the cover of the "Live After Death" album, they showed him rising from the grave as the result of a lightning strike, and his body was obscuring most of his last name, so all you saw was "Edward T. H" Sometime later, they came out with a greatest hits album with a PC video game on one of the discs, the game was called "Ed Hunter", so he finally had a full name. When I became an admin here, and needed a test account, I registered it as "Edward T. Hunter."
The sigs that I remember using are as follows:
"If Con is the opposite of Pro, then Congress must be the opposite of Progress."
This one was a quote from the comedian gallagher, which I thought was funny, and yet painfully accurate at the same time.
"Because I don't say it, don't mean I ain't thinking it!"
This was from the song "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" by Megadeth. I liked that one because it is somewhat rebellious, as is my nature. You can have a belief or opinion that may not sit well with the "powers that be", and while they may be able to coerce or bully you into not speaking it, they can't keep you from having that belief or opinion.
"Paralyzed by inhibition and indecision
What once was a release is now a prison"
"Nothing Left to Say", by a band called Fates Warning, who probably only one other person here has even heard of. To me, the song is about someone who has a goal in mind, and becomes so obsessed with it, that it is no longer fun anymore.
My current one sounds like some sappy love song, but it's actually pretty loud and heavy. It's called "What I'm Missin'", and is by a band called Overkill. Again, there probably aren't a lot of people here who have even heard of them.

Avatar: picture of my bird, a ringneck dove named Ava. I need to find a suitable picture of both my pets for avatar purposes.
Signature: has changed several times, as I find good quotes. I've used a couple of lines lifted from Dips' posts. Currently, the first line is a button I saw on a cashier, the second line is borrowed from a post by BeckySunshine. I couldn't leave on attributions and stay under the 200-character limit, unfortunately.

My avatar is Leo from VGCats dressed up as Solid Snake. No real reason for it, I just thought it looked kinda cool.
My sig is quote from Hank Hill from when some guy told him that he had an anger problem. I've been told that I'm similar to Hank Hill on stuff like this, which I guess is better than being anything like Homer Simpson.

And my sig is a line I saw on some other forum that I liked a lot. Kinda fits the way I think.:D
I like your version Sphinx! My sig. is a quote I found on a list somewhere on the web... I am thinking of changing it to: "Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part!" simply because...I've said it at least twice...and with the Holiday season in full swing, it is so true!
My avatar is a penguin from the Futurama episode "Birdbot of Ice-Catraz." I use that for my AIM SN which has something to do with penguins and killing. I like it so much, I just kept it. :D
DesignFox comes from Design- since I went to school for Graphic Arts, and Fox from my girl scout camp days.

My avatar is one of the X-Files' X. I'm a huge fan, to this day. I love that show and I spend a good part of undergraduate and graduate school doing nothing on Friday, then Sunday nights doing nothing but watching Mulder & Scully battling nefarious government agents and scary aliens. Sigh. I miss that show....
I don't have a sig currently. About 3 or 4 years ago on this board I had a couple of lines from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufruck" by TS Eliot. While that's my favorite poem of all time, I haven't found anything that has inspired me like those lines. I guess I gotta loosen up.

My Avatar is Tekkaman Blade from the anime of the same name. Possibly the most frighteningly powerful character I've ever seen. He survived his own self destruct, which took out part of the moon. And that's a power suit with enough firepower to take out a biomechanical space fleet. (no joke, he did it on more than one occasion)
The first part of my sig comes from the ideas I usually pop up with. Not enough to maim, injure or kill, but usually makes you want to be dead. Not evil enough for sociopath, but not far off.
The second part comes from a thread where posters were being keepers of varying smilies. I took the devil.

Avy was something I made a long time ago for my DevArt avy.
Sig is from Marroon 5's "Sunday Morning."
That song just makes me feel good and warm inside.
Sometimes when I'm counting the money after a long night at work, I'll pop my headphones on and listen to it. It just makes me feel like everything is Ok.
And, Melxb:
Any other Eliot poems you like? I'm an Eliot lover, myself.
My avatar is... well, obviously nothing.
My sig comes from the Donald Barthelme story, "Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby." I studied it a long time ago in English major school and it stuck with me for all these years. Not long ago, I found out there's a copy on the internet... "reprinted with permission," according the website:

I never got around to replacing my avatar. It used to be a particularly freaked-out-looking picture of Rey Mysterio but I just haven't gotten around to picking a new one yet. It'll inevitably be something to do with wrestling, though, I just have to wait till I find/make something I think is funny enough.
My signature I picked just because I liked that even the most peaceful man on Earth basically admitted that some of us are just plain violent and we might as well flaunt it. ;)

Well, my avatar does change on rare occasions, but it's always a picture of a certain bunny: Her Most Serene Imperial Bunniness, Queen Pudge the First. (Yes, she had sufficient attitude to warrant the name)
My current signature line is something Sir Sparhawk says in the book 'Domes of Fire', the first book of the Tamuli by David Eddings, and a pretty good explanation of the way I feel at work right now.
AirHostess

New avatar and siggy!
The avatar is of Kenny Rogers, as played by Will Sasso on Mad TV.
The siggy is what Kenny says in one of his sketches, about the 2001 Family Values Tour, after he beats the crap out of some kid.
Giggle Goose
12-14-2006, 10:42 PM
Giggle goose is a silly nickname my boyfriend gave me, because I giggle and smile a lot, even when I'm not supposed to. :D I just can't help it, I have such a hard time keeping a straight face when I think of something funny. I've had a lot more funny stuff to think about after joining these forums  I just did a random image search for a goose, and I thought the 'connect the dots' thing was cute.
I change my sig a lot, right now it's just an invitation to my Myspace.

I change my avatar from time to time, and my signature and title quite a bit. I've stuck with this avatar for a while now because people seem to like it. I found it on the Asheville Rocks livejournal community and stole it under cover of darkness.
As for the signature, it's a line from Because I'm a Blonde, a parody song by comedienne Julie Brown.
The full quote goes:
"I just want to say that being chosen as this mont's Miss August is like a compliment I'll remember for as long as I can. Right now I'm a freshman in my fourth year at UCLA, but my goal is to become a veterinarian because I love children."
Sadly, the entire quote won't fit. This is especially troubling because by changing UCLA to UNCA, I can make the quote relevant to my life, and pretend that it's being spoken by a bimbo attending the University of North Carolina at Asheville, just up the road.
Sigh...
And speaking of bimbos, my title "Bimbos of the Death Sun!" comes from the Sharyn McCrumb novel of the same title, which I highly recommend. You just can't beat a murder mystery that takes place at a sci-fi con.

My avatar is a picture I found online who-knows-where of 4501 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikado_Locomotive_No._4501) when it was green. The kinda ugly color change (at least it came out vaguely purple) was to go with the new title. Can't resist puns!
Which I guess was pretty much self explanatory. The signature is, too, come to think of it, from an essay he wrote about writing for children. I've never actually been good at putting away childish things, nor growing up, but still...

Since I finally found something interesting enough to be my avatar, I think i should introduce it here. Its a syphilis spirochaete, lovingly recreated in pink fuzz by those genius people at Giant Microbes.

12-20-2006, 11:32 AM
Supernatural. It's a TV show I've recently gotten into. :)
Avatar: Homestar Runner + DDR. Just two goofy things I like.
Signature: Well, it's probably what would be said if those Head-On guys marketed headdesking as a medical treatment.
My avatar was a picture of my great-nephew and his dog.
Now, it's a copy of a painting another nephew did. It's a woman sheltering a baby during a storm. He is really talented.
Signature will change from time to time. It's usually reminders of things that we moderators have a lot of problems with, just in case people aren't reading the stickies where they are actually posted.

(t's a cartoon I drew myself. First part of it, is the sheep... There's the old sayin' "Black Sheep in the family." And Since I'd come out to the parents now I'm the Rainbow Sheep of the family. ;-) There's also a 'pink sheep of the family' variation floating around on that crazy interweb, but rainbow is so much more fitting I think. Not crazy about the pink triangle connotations.
The second part was finding meditation as a good stress release at the end of a hard day. Mentally and emotionally I can let it all go and release it, without having to put any holes in walls. ;-)

Well my avatar is a picture of me from back in the 90s. I was going to use another one but I can't find it where I was dressed in psicorp uniform. Besides I'm not comfortable using an easily recognizable headshot on the web anyhow. So this picture has had a slight bit of photo processing.
Oh and I realize this isnt the thread for that but since I was asked the other day what my screen ident means I'll tell you that too. RAH are the initials of my most favortite science fiction author Robert A Heinlein. And Mota is a fictional religion that was created by the characters in the book Sixth Column to fight the horde that had taken over America. Put the two together and you have a kinda neato sounding name that can also be used for an elf in D&D.

Mt. Rushmore, Shrine of Democracy, one of the main reasons tourists come to my fair city. I thought that it was fitting and I couldn't think of anything else. I am not very good at coming up with creative things. So I came up with a very uncreative AV. I also chose it because, well I am proud of Mt. Rushmore and want people to know it. I haven't thought of a sig yet but will soon.

Simple enough, I go to a good number of computing-based web boards, and this is what I use there.
Avatar is a widescreen LCD monitor, with a form of the Windows Vista flag
Um....is that by any chance a 30" apple widescreen LCD?

Sig: A line taken from Heathers, which is a top class movie. The line sums up how I sometimes feel when working. XD

I already typed this all out before, over in the Story of your Avatar (http://www.customerssuck.com/board/showthread.php?t=11425) thread, so here it is, just quoted from my post there. ;)I honestly can't remember if I've ever talked about the origin of my user name and my (current) avatar before or not. If I did, it was a long time ago, on a previous version of the board that went away in one of the hacks (at least half a dozen since I first discovered CS!). So, I'll explain again for those that don't already know the deal.
Long story as short as I can make it: I'm a comic book geek. In the '70s and '80s, I grew up on a steady diet of superheros... the DC Comics variety, that is. In the '70s and '80s, the DC heroes were everywhere! You had Superman on TV in various forms, and in theaters, as brought to life by the late Christopher Reeve. You had Batman on TV (both live-action Adam West campiness, and also an animated series or 2). And you had Superfriends on ABC on Saturday mornings for over a decade. It was while watching that show one Saturday morning that I discovered the Emerald Gladiator, the ring-slinging "space cop" known as... GREEN LANTERN. I was immediately enthralled with this hero and the whole idea of a seemingly magical ring (but actually the product of alien technology millions of years in advance of our own) that could do ANYTHING the wearer can imagine!
As the years went by, my love for all things GL grew and grew. Eventually, I would make it a point to buy every issue of the comic that I could get my hands on (I still buy all the GL comics every month to this day) and to collect every piece of Green Lantern memorabilia I could afford to get my hands on! I even have GL (in the form of Hal Jordan) on my checks now, along with the other big DC heroes (Superman, Batman, the Flash, and Wonder Woman)! Yep, you read that right: I ordered DC Superheros checks, just so I could have checks with Green Lantern on them. I'm THAT much of a GL geek! :D
Because of my extreme level of FANaticism regarding GL, some of the members of the Official DC Comics Green Lantern Messageboard have officially dubbed me a "GL Super Fan"! :D
This being the case, when I first got online around 2000 or so, and first discovered the joys of messageboards, I wanted to use Green Lantern as my user name. But of course, the 'net having been around at least 5 years by this point, that name had long ago been snatched up on any MB you'd care to name! :(
I then tried Hal Jordan, the name of my favorite GL, the GL I grew up on. Again, no luck. Others had beaten me to it.
So, I then thought long and hard. Thought over all the wonderful Green Lantern stories I'd read, thought about all the wonderful, cool alien GLs I'd read stories of. Thought about who would be my 2nd favorite. And then I remembered my joy upon picking up and reading Green Lantern Corps Quarterly # 1 when it came out in 1992. I remembered reading its best story, "Layin' Down the Law", and laughing all the way through the humorous, action packed tale of a Green Lantern named Jack T. Chance (http://www.dcuguide.com/glcorps/profile.php?name=jacktchance), the roughest, toughest, gun-slingingest bastich to ever sling a ring for the Corps! Reacquainting myself with the stories he appeared in, I reminded myself of why I remembered them so fondly, why I enjoyed Jack so much. And ever since that day, everywhere I've gone online, my user name has been Jack T. Chance, or some variation thereof (JackTChance, jack_t_chance, etc.) While Jack has other fans, I'm apparently the only one that ever enjoyed him enough to use his name as my online ID, and his image as my avatar! :D
So, you can rest assured that wherever you go in cyberspace, if you encounter someone going by the name Jack T. Chance, you can be 99.9% sure it's me. ;)
And if you want to know more about Jack, click on his name above, ya poozers*! ;)
--Dan (But you can just call me "Jack"! ;))
*Before you ask, don't. It's a Kilowog (http://www.dcuguide.com/glcorps/profile.php?name=kilowog) thing, you wouldn't understand! ;)As for my signature, I'd think it's pretty self explanatory. ;)

My avatar is a picture of Dark Danny Phantom from Danny Phantom: The Ultimate Enemy. Danny Phantom is one of my favorite shows and The Ultimate Enemy is my favorite episode. Not to mention Dark Danny is my favorite villian of all time. My sig is several things: the first line is a quote from The Ultimate Enemy that had my sides in pain from extreme laughter. The second one is something I made up because I'm rather random and I like Harry Potter. The third line is the result of my randomness and my fond for snakes and Sailor Moon. Yes, I know. I'm weird.

Kind of odd reading people's descriptions of pics and signatures that they changed ages ago.
So, for the moment, my avatar's a lolcat from Fark, that I thought was funny as hell. I guess this was just before the "lolcats" thing peaked. Before it was the logo for the Chicago & North Western railroad. I'm a bit of a railhead, and grew up near a North Western switchyard, so that was kind of a madeleine of mine.
Signature for now is Mal from the last scene of Serenity. I'll replace it if when Joss makes a sequel.

My old avatar was me. If anyone remembers it, it was a black and white photo of myself with a hand around my neck.....took the pic myself, and it was my hand. Haha
The new avatar is the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion symbol. Any gamer should know what it is. I have been obsessed with the game for over a year now, and have the same tattoo on my lower arm. I thought the symbol was really cool looking as well, and all my desktop stuff is Oblivion, so why not "represent" on CS? :D
I have no signature....:(

My current avatar is the typewriter guy from Sesame Street, demonstrating some random letters ;)

My avatar is H.P. Lovecraft's monsterous creation Cthulhu. H.P. Lovecraft was an author from the early 1900's, and one of my favorite authors.
My sig is a quote from H.L. Mencken, my favorite reporter. He did the Scopes Monkey Trial, gave it that name, and coined the name for The Bible Belt. He's really cynical, and sarcastic, and will make a joke of anything.
My reason of choice being, Lovecraft is creepy, and who doesn't love creepy, frightening things, and I love sarcasm and snarkiness, and who better than the guy who tricked the country that the Bathtub was originally a hated idea until a president used it.

My avatar is me at work, in Lego. My sig is a line from a song in the movie Donnie Darko, (it was originally a song by Tears for Fears). And it sums up the way I feel a lot of the time.
My AV is Eternal Sailor Moon from Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (the best, final season that you will never see on American TV).
My sig is a quote from Fry on Futurama. It's also a lie.
The second part of my sig is a link to my oft-neglected blog.

My avatar is H.P. Lovecraft's monsterous creation Cthulhu.
I like H.P. Lovecraft. Haven't read any of his stuff in ages though. You did just remind me of this song:
The Lair of Great Cthulhu
(Tune: Chatanooga Choo-Choo)
Pardon me boy –
Is this the lair of Great Cthulhu?
In the city of slime,
Where it is night all the time.
Bob Hope never went
Along the road to Great Cthulhu,
And Triple-A has no maps,
And all the Cho-chos lay trpas.
You’ll see an ancient sunken city where the angles are wrong.
You’ll see the fourth dimension if you’re there very long.
Come to the conventicle.
Bring along your pentacle;
Otherwise you’ll be dragged off by a tentacle.
A mountain’s in the middle, with a house on the peak;
A gnashin’ and a thrashin’ and a clackin’ of beak.
Your soul you will be lackin’
When you see that mighty kraken.
Oo-oo! Great Cthulhu’s starting to speak.
So come on aboard,
Along the road to Great Cthulhu.
Wen-di’-gos and Dhols
Will make Big Macs of our souls.
Under the sea,
Down in the ancient city of R’llyeh,
In the lair of Great Cthulhu,
They’ll suck your soul away!
(Great Cthulhu, Great Cthulhu –
Suck your soul! –
Great Cthulhu, Great Cthulhu)
In the lair of Great Cthulhu,
They’ll suck your soul away.
(Here, there is an obliggato saxaphone solo, a-la Tex Beneke)

Wow, I thought I had posted in this thread ages ago but I don't see it (or I just missed it)...
Anyway, my avatar is Pablo the Best Dog Ever (tm). He is my ex's chihuahua who I post about all the time but don't see nearly as much as I'd like. I've changed it from time to time but it's always been him. If and when I get my own puppy I'll use that but I don't see that happening any time soon.
My sig is just a couple quotes I like. I saw the Groucho Marx one somewhere and thought it was great. And the George Carlin was from a couple months ago in my page-a-day calendar that I have at work. I saw it and I had to use it. Sometimes George isn't so "work appropriate" but, oh well...! :)

Well, my avatar's a boring reflection of my photograhpic hobby... For those who care the lens is a Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4 G IF-ED.
My sig is a quote from the musical Urinetown, which I worked sound for in May.
It's a great little satire.

Cool song! I might have to track down a copy of it sometime! :D
But myself, I'm partial to Metallica's classic take "The Thing That Should Not Be":"The Thing That Should Not Be" by Metallica
Messenger of fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light
Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for father, roaming free
Fearless wretch
Insanity
He watches,
lurking beneath the sea
Great old one
Forbidden sight
He searches
Hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal
In madness you dwell
Crawling chaos underground
Cult has summoned twisted sound
Up from ruins once possessed
Fallen city, living death
Fearless wretch
Insanity
He watches,
lurking beneath the sea
Timeless sleep
has been upset
He wakens
Hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal
In madness you dwell
Not dead which eternal lie
Stranger eons death may die
Drain you of your sanity
Face the thing that should not be
Fearless wretch
Insanity
He watches,
lurking beneath the sea
Great old one
Forbidden sight
He searches
Hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal
In madness you dwell:super:

Mine's pretty basic. I'm a HUGE fan of J. Grant!! I'm addicted to Two Lumps and cry that Flem is no longer updated. He actually offered to help my friend and I design our tats to look like Eben and Snooch.
So I'm flipping through Flem again and I see the bunny ones. Heh as I always say, I just seem sweet and innocent. Never give the bunny a flame thrower. *weg*
As for a siggy, eh haven't though of one yet that I could get away with on here. I might end up using my old derby quote "I ain't cute, I ain't cuddly so yeah, f*** off". *shrugs*
