Heh, I was just trying to describe some of our cats to a friend, and realized, we have TOO many cats with too distinctive of personalities. So, in the spirit of Meerkat Manor, I'll introduce our brood.

Hamlet: 13, the oldest and the ALPHA. Gray and white, long fur, probably about 12 pounds. Bitter, cranky, knows he's at the top of the food chain and revels in it. Highly affectionate to the indifferent human male alpha (my dad). Usually lazy to the point of coma, but will rise up and soundly beat the snot out of any young buck who tries to toy with his position as Supreme Lord of House. "Talks" nonstop, and also has a vocabulary of around 15 English words, used erratically; however, the use of the words "Mama" and "no" are usually noted.

Toby: The prima donna. Strawberry blonde and about average size. Spoiled rotten by his mother (my sister) and therefore believes himself to be the Crown Prince of House. Confused attention whore. Disdains human affection while still craving it...will protest mightily upon being picked up but will begin purring and winding around your legs the instant you stop paying attention to him. Wants affection...just doesn't want anyone to KNOW he wants it.

Mattie: The Alpha female of the house, but prefers to keep to herself, living in the laundry room and sleeping in the dirty clothes. Has a permanant limp from having fallen out of the loft of the barn where she was born, but can still whip the butt of anyone who challenges her. Responds to attention positively but is perfectly content to be fed and ignored.

Lucky: Very young, probably no more than a year old. Named for having been found with severe internal damage, but just in time to be operated on and saved. Friendly if a bit hard to locate at times, refuses to eat dry cat food unless it is straight from the bucket. Can be found either sleeping in the middle of the floor with her kittens or running and playing crazily. Believed to have had children not for the raising, but to have someone her own age to play with. In line to be fixed very soon.

Moby: Hamlet's REAL second-in-command. Despises Hamlet but has no position to take his authority, so merely tolerates his rulership. Not afraid to lash out at a human if he feels he has been pushed too far. Extremely defensive of his security blanket to the point of drawing blood. Brief displays of affection typically end in violence. Tolerates the presence of...

The Kittens: The youngest three and newest members of Mysty's Manor. Triplets born to Lucky. Very happy-go-lucky, no pun intended. Tend to purr and seek out human attention even when unwanted. Still working out their distinct personalities. Run in a pack with...

DQ, a.k.a. Buckbeak: A slightly deformed teen cat, barely younger than Lucky. Named Drama Queen for his tendency to whine and cry when he wants attention, shortened to DQ. Nicknamed Buckbeak by my mother for his extreme overbite. Very codependant and clingy, wants nothing more than to be carried everywhere by whichever human is closest.

Chella: Formerly the Siamese Antichrist. Could usually be found lurking with her eyes glowing bright red, waiting to hiss, spit, howl, and unleash her lethal Left Hand of Doom attack upon anything unfortunate enough to cross her path. Has since retired from a life of hellfire and brimstone and now mostly spends her days napping in the yard. Left-handed.

Spunky: Abuse survivor, lost most of her tail in an automobile engine but retains about four inches of "stub". Usually lives outside, but upon rare visits to the inside of the house, vanishes for days at a time, leaving obvious signs of eating, sleeping and using the litterbox, but almost never being seen. Eventually tires and returns to the outside world.

The Black Pack: A group of four black cats that tend to remain grouped together with no apparent distinguishing marks or traits among them. The lone female is named MJ, the three males are named but their actual identities remain a point of contention. Generally harmless, wanting only to be fed and to sleep in the sun. One male does sometimes share living arrangements with Paddy from the...

Graybies: Shortened form of "Gray-babies". Troupe of four silver cats, a father, two sons, and a daughter. Smokey, the father, is almost seven and wants nothing more than to be Alpha, however, he is too petrified of Moby and Hamlet to make an attempt. Gracie, the female Graybie, is essentially the same as DQ, minus the physical deformities and with a much more shrill voice. Paddy, the largest child Graybie, talks and preens for the humans, but gets nervous and worried around cats other than his friend in the Black Pack. George, the last Graybie, is high-strung and agitated, flinching from even the kindest human touch until he has accepted the idea as "all right". Even then will run and hide at the slightest provocation.

Tonka: Moby's wayward brother. Tonka and Moby stopped getting along before they exited the womb. Tonka is the only cat to have found a path onto the roof of the house and routinely patrols there, considering it "his" turf. Probably the physically strongest of the cats...has the body of a brick.

Grymlin: Toby's half-brother. Spends the days outside and the nights inside. Enjoys the company of humans. Mostly notable for being the heaviest of the cats, weighing in around at least 16 pounds. Otherwise a non-entity, preferring only to eat his dinner and then sleep in the nearest available warm space.

The Browncoats: Two brown tabby cats, sort of an offshoot to the Black Pack but even more poorly defined. Merely show up for food once in a while. Tame but prefer to keep to themselves.

Penny: The collie mix guard dog. Raised around cats from the age of three months, therefore quite comfortable with them and very uncomfortable around other dogs. Serves mainly as the guardian/bouncer for the cats, warding off large predators and breaking up catfights, usually by plowing through the middle of them at top speed and sending the participants spinning across the yard. However, not above baiting the cats by waiting for them to try and eat out of her bowl, then chasing them away.

I'm thinking of writing a book. Think I have enough characters?

You've got enough characters, to be sure. I'm just wondering if you have enough pages in the book!

What does your house smell like??

No offense meant, of course.

I had two kittens a few years ago. My house stank!

Next ones you should name Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer!

No offense taken, Knightmare, I know what you meant, heh. To be perfectly honest, there was a "smell" for a while before we tossed the old sofa and chair out in the yard to make shelters for the outside kitties during the winter. But now the house smells like carpet shampoo and candles. Plus, there are litterboxes scattered throughout the house that get cleaned out a couple times a day so the "cat" smell is kept minimal. (Hint, self-stick adhesive tile floor is the greatest invention known to man!)

We actually did have a cat named Mongo Jerry for a while, before he moved on. A lot of our cats are adopted from, shall we say, less fortunate circumstances, and several have come here as transients who stayed permanantly for the food...but a few stay for a while and then move on.

I have thought off and on that there were enough stories from our various cats over the years that they'd make a great read, heh heh. Maybe if I get to feeling frisky (pun!) I'll write one of the funnier stories and see how well it reads.

Spiffy, trust me...it wouldn't end with one book! It might take me two or three just to catch up to our current crop!

Just so I know that I counted right...23 cats and a dog?

I think so. We'll be down to 21 after today because two of the Kittens found a new home. But I also may have missed a few.

Do I even need to mention we live in the country? They have a few good acres to run around on, heh. All the females but Lucky are fixed (and she's in line now that her babies are weaned and moving on). And the boys that aren't fixed are, er...how do I put it? Well, the member of the Black Pack and the Graybie who are friends are...FRIENDS. You know? Heh.

VERRRRRRRRRRRRRY special friends. And to anyone who would question that, let's just say that cats aren't exactly...private. Oy. :brainbleach:
