My husband and I took our glasses in and are having them made into the lined bifocals.

My husband was having constant headaches from the progressive and having trouble driving with them, so he is going with the lined bifocal. he had a few near misses trying to drive with them and I worried about him constantly, since he has a long commute.

I was having a hard time driving with mine too, since I had to keep positioning my head to see the road clearly, which was made a lot worse at night. I have a bit of trouble driving at night as it is, but it was made a lot worse with the progressive, so I am going with the lined bifocal too.

My husband and I both found the progressive to be a huge pain and not worth it, so we gave up our vanity and are both going with the lined bifocals.

I wear progressives, but I never wore any other kind of bifocal. I like them, but it took me some time to get used to them. I had headaches, too, for a long time. In fact, they drove me absolutely nuts until I got the hang of it.

Now, I just tilt my head unconsiously (whether I'm wearing them or not ;) ) and I can just habitually hit the spot I need without thinking about it. I thought I'd never get used to them, but I did. I like them now.

Sorry yours didn't work out for you. I think my dad wears the lined ones, too, same reason. Can't get used to them. I wonder if the shape of my frames has anything to do with it...I wear perfectly round Windsors..."Ghandi" or "John Lennon" spectacles instead of the wide rectangles that are popular now.
