After much thinking, I had my cat out to sleep today.
I got her as a kitten 16½ years ago. She was my baby.
She got really sick late last July, and while she got better, she never got 100% well again.
The vet said that something was wrong with her, but without getting too intensive, she didn't know why. Knowing that I was going to be putting Rooks to sleep, I didn't let them get too involved with tests.
It was harder then I thought. But it needed to be done.
The thing I'll miss most is her hogging the bed. This morning I woke up to get some water. When I got back to my room, she was huddled on my pillows. When I laid down on the other side of the bed, she crawled all over me and edged me back to "my" side of the bed. Brat.
I miss her already.
She was a beauty.
I'm so sorry.
It must have been such a difficult decision.

Thanks, everyone.
This was a decision made many months ago, actually, but every time I took her to the vet, there was some improvement so I talked myself into putting it off.
I knew it had to be done sooner or later. The vet assured me that I didn't make her suffer in any way. She was still well enough that I didn't have to do it.
Even the vet cried a little with me. That made me love that vet's office even more.
:sigh:

*hugs* I'm sorry to hear about your cat!
I remember when I was 13, the only geek girl I knew of in town, and PAINFULLY shy; my family moved to a new town, and my cat Tarbaby (he was this gorgeous dark brown all over) was my only friend. A year after the move, he had gotten so sick that my mom finally had to take him to the vet to be put down. It's so hard to do!

I'm so sorry, I know how hard it is to but an animal to sleep having to do it myself not long ago.
Many hugs :hug::hug:

They are the best friends you can have. I'm sorry it happened. When I started to read this, Thelma started to meow and sat on my lap at the computer. Its the only time she does this. Or when I'm reading a comic on bed, she'll sit on it and go to bed.
I'm sorry it happened. But you did the right thing, before she had time to start to suffer. Not easy. :( I'm here if you want to PM.

I'm sorry; 16 years is a long time, but never long enough.
I had to have my cat put to a year and a half ago, and waited too long. Even knowing you're going to have to, it's hard to tell when.
Excuse me, I have to go hug my current kitties now.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I had something similar with my flame-point Siamese. He'd been really sick, then rebounded, and I got to enjoy 9 more months with him before he suffered a blood clot & had to be put down. 16 years is a long lifetime, but it's never long enough.
Now I'm off to cuddle Sir Fluffybuns (my avatar), though his "real" name is Casey.

Thanks, everyone.
It's been a rough few days.
The best way to describe it is what I told my oldest sister: I'm somewhere between completely devestated and thinking that I'm not sad enough.
My mom thinks I should get a new kitten (she honestly thinks it would help, but she's not pushing it). Becks has a standing offer of letting me borrow one/both of her cats whenever I want.
The thought of getting another cat doesn't depress me as much as I think it should, but I also don't see myself doing it anytime soon.
The test will be when I take Rooks' old food to the no-kill shelter.
Hug your cats (and any other loved pets) for me.

Hetfield, mostly. Nella's a bitch. You can see if she likes you, though.

I'm sorry about your kitty. It's true, they don't live nearly long enough.
