View Full Version : I am a veg-hypocrite
I am a vegetarian.
I have old leather hiking boots (that may need replacing soon *cry* I love them so)
I have many wool socks
And the worst crime to date: I just bought a down hiking jacket. I had to....it will pack down o near nothing in my pack, its warm, and was $50. I do have some veg-guilt....I think the hard core peeps will strip me of my veggie-card, but meh.
Oh, hiking gear sprees.....you can be bad, haha.
I'll blame this faux-pas on being a Gemini.

Well, you said you are a vegetarian, not a hard-core vegan. And some people are only vegetarian because they think it's a healthier way to eat (which may or may not be true...there's plenty of junk out there that doesn't have meat in it), not because they give a :censored: about the animals.
So I guess I'm saying that whether or not you are a hypocrite depends on your what reasons you claim for being a vegetarian in the first place. :p
Now I want steak...

My husband claims that he's a vegetarian.
He eats nothing but meat and products from animals (unless I'm pregnant, and that's a whole other story).
In his words "You are what you eat. I eat vegetarian animals, so I'm a vegetarian. See?"
He's a nut.:D

Go ahead and get the new leather hiking boots, and toss in a nice pair of gloves while you are at it, I just had a steak for dinner and the cow skin would otherwise go to waste ...
[I can understand not getting fur items made from nonfood animals, but not something that is a byproduct of the food industry like sheep pig, goat or cow skin items. To not use the hides or bones would be wasteful.]
We really will not discuss the morality of omnivorism, but until it is illegal to eat animal products, it really would be wasteful to not use the hides of what we eat.

I can see your objection to the other two, but I wouldn't worry about the wool so much. Shearing sheep is not harmful to them at all, besides a few minutes of stress.

Also, the sheep are nice and cool after their sheering. Think of it as a blessing to them; they get to enjoy air conditioning!
Escapee, I blame you for my steak craving now. :p

Exactly why I have no huge issues with it....this thread was merely for humor :) And I love when I can point out my veg-hypocrisy :D

I used to piss off anti nuke protesters by pointing out the percentage of nuke power in the juice they used and that they needed to decrease their power usage by that percentage .. and they never seemed to understand the point ...
Though I have run across a few that when I pointed out that *now* they could actually specify where their power comes from didn't want to go to the added expense of specifying all hydro

Isn't down just feathers? So no need to think the poor goose got killed, maybe he's just naked.:)

Apparently pullin the feathers is really painful, so it'd be better to kill the buggers (I am no fan of geese)
But another funny story from the purchase....I bought it a "3-letter outfitter" usin my card from "other 3-letter outfitter" (yeah points!) The cashier cracked that "We don't take those cards! Nah, its good, I'm a member of other 3-letter as well." Cool guy...will go back to that location :D

Did anyone see the episode of House recently where Laura Prepon's character and her boyfriend got into an argument because she thought salmon was a vegetable.
Why would a fish be a vegetable?
I went to highschool with a girl who was a vegetarian, because she hated that animals had to die.
She never understood why I would laugh when I saw her eat Jell-O.

She didn't think that salmon was a vegetable, she just felt that eating salmon didn't compromise her integrity as a vegetarian. If she didn't want to get into arguments with people she could call herself a pescatarian, but that's a relatively recent phenomenon, when I was a kid, some vegetarians chose to eat fish, and some didn't.
That was the blogger ep, right? Rather good episode

As has been pointed out, it all depends on why you are a vegetarian. If you are a diet vegetarian, there is no hypocrisy in anything in your post. If, however, you are a political vegetarian, yeah, you are a full-on hypocrite.
My friend Pilot and his wife are both vegetarians since high school (they are in their 30's now), but they are diet vegetarians....they just choose not to eat meat. They have no problem with anyone else who eats meat, and will happily much on their vegetarian fare while their friends eat steak right in front of them. To them it is a personal choice, one they chose for themselves, but not one they feel they can (or would) be preachy about to others. It works for them, but they do not try to change other people to their way of thinking, just as I don't try to get them to eat meat.
And by the way, they are full-on vegetarians, as they don't even eat fish. They are not, however, vegans...they actually think vegans are a bit nuts.
I'll blame this faux-pas on being a Gemini.
Now wait one moment here. As a Gemini myself, we must protest this gross stereotyping of us as two-faced. I swear, when I meet you, the four of us are going to throw down, you and I.
In his words "You are what you eat. I eat vegetarian animals, so I'm a vegetarian. See?"
What, he doesn't eat any carnivores or omnivores? I am not certain, but I think pigs will eat meat, fowl will certainly eat fish, and a lot of fish will eat other fish. Hell, I've had shark, and they'll eat ANY flesh! (By the way, shark is very tasty.)
He's a nut.:D
So by his philosophy, doesn't that make YOU a nut? :eyewaggle:
Laura Prepon's character and her boyfriend got into an argument because she thought salmon was a vegetable.
Fish is not a vegetable, but a lot of "vegetarians" eat fish. Sure, it means they are not true vegetarians, but everyone decides for themselves what they will eat, and unless you are making a political stand out of your diet, it doesn't matter. Me, I do not drink caffeine, but I don't give people who drink it shit. Why? Because it's my choice for me not to drink caffeine. And when occasionally I do have a Dr. Pepper (road trip!), I am not being a hypocrite. I am merely adjusting for the situation. After all, I have never said I swore off all caffeine. I merely say I choose not to drink it. The "generally speaking" part of not drinking it is understood.

That is the definition of a veg-hypocrite.
Not to mention the definition of phenomenally stupid.
It's mostly diet....I don't care what anyone else eats....I only care about what is going in my tummy :D
Are Geminis who wear glasses eight-eyed?

If, however, you are a political vegetarian, yeah, you are a full-on hypocrite.
Depends on what politics you're protesting. When I can eat meat, I still generally choose not to, as a political thing. However it's not because I think it's wrong to eat meat, it's because I am a crazy hippie environmentalist and humanitarian who thinks that we need to eat less meat. (That and I try to eat meat at a low enough and efficient enough level that factory farms would be unprofitable and animals get treated better).
Fish is not a vegetable, but a lot of "vegetarians" eat fish. Sure, it means they are not true vegetarians, but everyone decides for themselves what they will eat, and unless you are making a political stand out of your diet, it doesn't matter.
It is, however, horribly confusing. My aunt went "vegetarian" a year ago, and for the longest time I kept forgetting that she was ok with eating fish. And it can be a problem from the "can I eat anything" side of things. At the moment I am close to vegan of necessity, but even though she knows I can't have milk, I cannot just assume that there will be food for me if she's cooking unless I give her more instructions. Again, now that I remember she eats fish this isn't a problem, but it was before.
And I think that the Jell-o girl was just that incredibly stupid. I suppose not getting informed does make you a pretty bad vegetarian, but bear in mind I've seen products labeled as "Vegetarian! Dairy-free! No eggs! Vegan!". People are indeed that ignorant.

Pigs are the best way to dispose of a body. <.< >.>
And I know that chickens occasionally eat their young if not carefully watched. Or maybe ecovillage just had unusual cannibal chickens.

I know that, and you know that, I just think it's funny the political "vegetarians" who will eat meat, or chicken because it's "not meat" which is what I thought that point was of that show.
And yes it was the blogger episode.

I did full on vegetarian for a few years, but it wasn't a political diet -.-
Didn't work for me in the long run, wasn't healthy ( for me personally that is. I don't begrudge carnivores or herbivores. ). Taught me to cook and eat better though. I eat meat now, but only leaner white meats and only if I can bake it or grill it. Never red meats, too heavy.
Also, it led to my patented Heathen Burgers(tm). Get yourself some portabella mushroom burgers ( 100% vegan~ ). Grill em, then garnish em with bacon, herbs and garlic feta cheese for the sacrilege. <3
Poor geese. I had no idea. :(
How is a fish anything but a dead animal? If you are veg for health reasons, eating fish makes sense, 100%. Otherwise, it makes you ... well, a veg-hypocrite! I don't think you should call yourself vegetarian if you eat dead animals, though. You aren't, you just don't eat land animals. Personally, I love me a hamburger too much - I feel no guilt wearing leather! In fact, I have a compulsion to do so sometimes, it's weird. :p
