I decided this past weekend that I was going to go dress shopping. I invited my fiance's mother and sister and my own mother and sister also came. We went to a very well known bridal shop for our appointment and were assigned a "consultant." This lady was very nice but kind of pushy (expected since she is paid by commission). Well, she tells me to pick out three dresses. I ended up picking 5 and we got started. The first dress I tried on was an informal one which did not suit my body shape so I moved on. The second one was a HUGE pain! I had no idea of all the time and energy and work that goes into gettting on a stinking dress. First, I had to put on a body cast that they call a "slip" and "bra." Then, I had to have my mom come in (the "consultant" said she wouldn't mind helping me but I'd rather not have a stranger seeing me in my under-things) to help me into the dress. She had to stick her arms down the top as far as they would go and open up the bottom so I could bend down and slide in. Then, there were little clasps that she tried to close but every time I took a breath, they would pop back open. We then had to get the "consultant" into the dressing room to help us figure out how to keep them closed. Apparently you laced up the back ties first (as tightly as it would go- to prevent breathing I assume) and THEN closed the clasps. Then I was put on display for all who were in the store to "adore." I had three "consultants" ohing and ahing over me. Then they put a silly tiara on my head and the veils also. My mom got teary-eyed and I told her she better not cry or else I was going to start too. THEN the dang "consultant" told me I need a fuller slip for the dress. So, I had to take off the dress and do it ALL over again.. After that work-out was over, I decided to try on another dress. This one was much much much (I really stress the "much" here) simpler! And it looked a lot better. I felt great in this dress! So there was a little more admiring by strangers and positive feedback from my families and I was really happy with it so when the "consultant" asked me if I wanted to try on more dresses, I refrained from screaming it and politely said no. Then, the "consultant" told me I better try on some shoes to make sure it won't need any alterations length-wise. She pulled up a chair and I sat down. She brought over some shoes and handed them to me. I began to lean forward but didn't get very far. I called my sister over and had to ask her to take off my socks and put on my shoes for me. Then I proceeded to warn my families that I would pretty much be helpless on the wedding day seeing as how I couldn't even reach my feet to put my shoes on... Needless to say, it was a very long morning and I was so irritated with shopping that I couldn't even make myself finish my Christmas shopping... Now I'm going to have to make a special trip this Friday. So a warning to all you girls who want to get married someday, prepare yourself for the dress shopping- eat a good breakfast, get plenty of sleep the night before and practice taking small, dainty breaths (it's the only way to breath once you've been squeezed and stuffed into a dress!).

Heh. Did you go to a D______'s B______ too?

I went dress shopping by myself...it was easier that way. They tried to get me in that corset thing too, nuh uh. I had em' sew cups into the dress I picked. They also tried to get me into a fuller petticoat, too. Sorry, my ass is big-looking enough as it is, I wanted a slimmer outline.

I got my shoes from Pearlriver.com. We had a slightly asian-flavored wedding, as my husband is half-Vietnamese. I brought them with when I went shopping so they'd know where to hem the dress up to.

Now you know why I had my mom make my dress!

We went dress shopping one time and it made me so crazy that I had mom do it for me. Thank goodness she's a great seamstress. She made mine and my niece's dresses. Of course, she also gave her best friend a heart attack because she didn't actually finish the dress until 6pm the day before (She hems everything by hand and it had a huge skirt. It didn't help that she had cut across the tip of her right index finger a week before the wedding either. That set her back a few days.).

Congratulations! Enjoy this time!

When I hear these horror stories about brides trying to get a wedding dress, I'm glad that mine was my grandmother's and that it fit like it was tailor made for me.

Now, if only the rest of the planning went as well I wouldn't have contemplated eloping and telling the rest the wedding party to stuff it. :D
