Well, I've finished my first novel. 119,733 words, 349 pages in 1.5 spaced and 12-point, measuring 4 cm thick pile of A4, costing £7.50 to send it to the undergrad Maia Press competition on Special Delivery. Wish me luck!!

But I still love the universe/characters/premise I wrote, so I've been given the idea to start a short story compendium in case Hero ever makes it big.:D

I'm asking my American peers, those who know about New York City; I don't think this is the kind of close-detailed info one can find on the web: if you go to the university there, are you able to get a weekend retail job? (I've heard that some colleges don't let you work while in higher education...) And if this is NYC, would it be easy/difficult to get part-time in, say, a jewellery store?

 I'm like this alllllllll the time. Thanks if you know, don't worry if you don't, but a gist would be nice.

Oooh, I'm not giving away much ;) In a word, superheroes. Only they're not superheroes. They have powers that can be suffixed with '-kinesis' (i.e. pyrokinesis, fire manipulation and the like.) They just wanna live their Goddamn lives - but the military who ran the experiment have other idea, and it concerns their kids...

Yeah. It's called Hero and I'm entering it into a UK undergraduate novel competition - winner gets a publishing deal. It may be about people with super powers but I have taken pains to smush all the superhero stereotypes I can find. One of my favourite examples is that you wouldn't find the Justice League using their powers to enhance their sex lives. I've spent a long time on Hero, I love my characters to bits, and I hope the judges like it too...:D

Can I bump this back to the first page? I, uh, do still have that query.

I've never heard of a college not *allowing* you to work while in school. I would say probably a majority of students at any college are going to have at LEAST a part time night / weekend job to help pay bills or just add to the pocket money. You just have to make sure that your character schedules time to do work.

And I think there are probably enough jewelry stores in NYC that a character could get a job in one. Especially if you don't put the store right downtown, but put it out a little bit.

Not many students I know live downtown unless in a dorm or something.

PM me if you want to bounce ideas. I'm a writer too, so I'm always bouncing ideas off people and checking for feasibility.
