I still live with my parents. It's cheap, and they get tech support etc (programming video is a biggie there). Besides, I only came into a job some two years back that would allow me to move out, and I've been saving hard to do just that. I'm going to have a decent deposit, but the hints from my mother...
"You could have this spare fridge-freezer when you move, and how about this microwave..."
Nothing like being subtle, is there? It's also nothing like being subtle.
I don't really mind, since it means I can have some familiar gear with no cost, and my father has a large van so moving is going to be a doddle.
However, I did a little wandering around a large appliance retailer this morning, just to get an idea of how much it would cost me to get a number of basic appliances (DVD projector, surround sound - all the essentials) when I noticed the brand name on some appliances.
Smeg.
I kid you not. There's a whole range of appliances with 'Smeg' written on them prominently.
Smeg cookers.
Smeg fridges.
Smeg freezers.
I left with a smile. Google has since confirmed that this is not an amusing prank by an employee.

Not only is it not a prank, there are entire stores here that carry nothing but 'Smeg' products. We did a serious double-take the first time we drove past the big blue sign 'SMEG'!
hehe welcome to the wonderful and EXPENSIVE world of moving out of home.
congrats on the moving out raps!!

I smell Engrish at work here, which means the owner's manuals that come with these things should be entertaining, to say the least. I wonder if Smeg is one of those companies that is actually owned by a some Japanese corporation somewhere down the line? A corporation that has never seen Red Dwarf, long may those smegheads live! :)
Raps, when you move, will go for a house or a flat? Is it true that it's really hard to actually buy a house and that what you generally have is a very long-term lease? Good luck on your search!

Its going to be at the end of the year that I start to look in earnest - hopefully should have roughly 20% of the mortgage by then.
I'd be looking for buying a house. There are plenty around, but it's more that you have to pay for ages for it - standard mortgage is 25 years, though I hope to get that down to twenty or so.

I believe Smeg appliances is older than Red Dwarf, but considering the trouble the RD makers got into with what smeg(ma) means, I'm surprised the applicance makers didn't do a little more research into what they're calling their products.

I love Red Dwarf!
When I was reading the post I was reminded of the android trying to call Rimmer a smeghead. "SMEEE... HEEE!"
*dances off singing*
I want to lie ship wrecked and comatose...

Smeg appliances are top of the range. I think it is an Italian brand (and presumably, in Italy, "Smeg" doesn't have the amusing undertone that it does in English-speaking countries), and its been around for at least 40 years, far longer than Red Dwarf ! I wanted a Smeg fridge, but they are beyond expensive, so I had to settle for a Bosch instead.

Even English-speaking countries goof up sometimes. IIRC, there's an Australian hair products called "NADS" that got more than a few snickers here in the states.
Then again, I'm sure there are some American products with names that get guffaws from other countries. It's all relative.
OT, but Red Dwarf rules! I hope they do another season!
