View Full Version : No one ever thinks he is my son

I have noticed a growing trend lately. No one seems to grasp that my big guy is actually my son till I tell them.
He is a good foot taller than me and does outweigh me by a good amount, but that doesn't change the fact that he is indeed my son.
He went with me yesterday to the outpatient clinic, since my doctor's office was closed and I didn't want to go the ER. I was in horrendous pain and I didn't think I could wait till Tuesday when I have a doctor's appt.
Anyway, he is sitting in the examing room with me and the doctor asks me what his relationship to me is. I told her he is my son and she gave me a  look.
I had a former coworker accuse me of having an affair because he said he saw me kissing and hugging another man. I had to tell him what a dumbass he was, because the man he saw me kissing and hugging is my SON.
I finally met my son's girlfriend in the store and she got upset with me because she thought I was moving in on "her man". I told her I was his MOTHER and she wasn't making a good impression on me. She gave me a :o look and apologized. I told my son his girlfriend is nuts. :p
I came home one day and my big guy was outside playing with his friends, so I called him over to ask him something and I heard one of his friends ask if I was his girlfriend. My son told him "dude, that's my MOTHER" I thought it was funny, my son did not.
Another time, we were waiting for my husband to come out of the store while my big guy and I were waiting outside. I mentioned how cold I was and my son wrapped his coat around me and was hugging me to help me warm up, when an old lady walked by and said "young love, how sweet". My son yelled after her "SHE IS MY MOTHER!" I was too busy laughing to say anything.
So, those are just some of the tales of my big guy being mistaken for everything but my son. :D

Aw, that's so cute. It's not that people think he's old, they think you are really young...which you are.:D And you managed it naturally. Good work.

i get a similar thing, well... most think i am my dad, well, untill a grew a beard, but before that, dad's work buddies would start talkign to me, and i'd just stare at them confused, same on the phone, they kept telling me to get my ass in gear and come help put out this fire! "uhm... you want my dad..."

Giggle Goose, my big guy will be 14 years old on Feb. 2nd.
At his last school, I had to ask them to let him out early and the lady told me that only his parent could ask that he be let out early.
I told her I was his mother and she told me I wasn't what she expected his mother to look like. I asked her what she thought I looked like and she thought since he is a big guy that I would be a big woman.

I get mistaken for my mom on the phone all the time. And to make matters worse, we have the same name!

I get mistaken for my Dad, not a big deal except he's been dead for 7 years.
Both of my boys are big. Oldest (17) is 6'5" about 240 or so, solid muscle, I told him hard farm work would be good for him. Youngest son (just turned 13) is 6'2" (still growing) about 200 pounds, also solid muscle. Between my wife, daughters and myself we don't sit still too long otherwise we could be mistaken for food and consumed. I kid you not between the two of them they ate an entire steer, hog and numerous poultry type things. They're both taller than me but I out weigh them and while they might be stronger than me they'll never be tougher and endure the pain I can put up with and come-out on top.
BTW I'm often referred to as their grandfather. Now my wife and oldest daughter have been refered to as sisters. If they were closer in age they could pass for twins.

my mom and i probably could pass for twins if she wasn't twice my age and 3 inches shorter

My son and I look too much alike to be confused as anything but relatives.
Overheard between my eldest boy and friend once:
"Your Mom is hot."
My Son: *offended* "Is not."
"Is to."
"Is not."
"So, you're saying your mom is ugly?"
*pissed* "NO! My Mom is...uh..."
"Hot?"
"ARG!" *stomps off*
Kids are funny.

I had a lot of teachers my dad had throughout school. And I guess when they thought of my dad, they still think of him as the kid. I had a lot of teachers call me by my dad's name by mistake. My mom says I sound a lot like him too. She says it creeps her out cause sometimes when I call, she'll be thinking, "What the hell is HE calling me for?" Then she realizes it's me.

When my oldest was younger, he got off the school bus and asked me if I was hot standing outside. I told him no, why? His bus driver told him I was hot.
My daughter and I get mistaken for each other on the phone all the time.
Tanasi, my husband has been mistaken for our children's grandfather. My big guy is taller than both me and his father, so I often get asked where my son gets his height from. My husband told me it's not funny to tell people it's from the mailman. :p

Mis, my youngest has a birthday on Feb. 2 too:)
Anyhow, I know what you mean about people not believing you. I get   looks all the time when I'm with my oldest. He'll be 16 in March. I can't possibly be old enough to have a kid that age.
I went to pick him up and one of his friends asked if I was his sister. He said no, then said "His eyesight must be bad because your old" I told him to watch himself, I brought him in this world and I can take him out.

I get the same kind of comments with my "little" brother--he's 3 years younger, but not little by any stretch. As it happens, I take after my dad, with dark eyes and a tanner complexion, plus I color my hair darker than it naturally is. In addition, I'm only 5'7". My brother, on the other hand, is 6'5" with really pale blonde hair, blue eyes and very light skin--we often say he got "all the Dutch." When I first went away to college, my dormmates thought I had two boyfriends-my actual boyfriend, and my brother. He and I had a good laugh about that.
We still get comments all the time, because we're close and get along really well, so apparently we interact like a couple. I even get the evil eye from waitresses who think he's cute at restaurants, and his female aquaintances if they don't know I'm his sister.
In addition, even though I'm older, he still acts like the stereotypical "protective big brother" since he is so big. It is kinda nice sometimes, but he intimidates the hell out of guys I date, even though I know he's a big softie.

myswtghst, my brother and I get the same thing. He's 2 1/2 years younger, but he is 6'7" and I am the runt at 6'. But he got the scandinavian complextion and blonde hair, I got the irish and dye my hair red. My bro is more interested in cars than women, so we go out together alot, and I am constantly getting dirty looks from girls, and people asking him if I am his girlfriend.
BTW... I am another 02/02 baby. 02/02/1982, why do bars never believe me?!?!

The only things I get are with my brother and my dad.
With my dad, it's simply because he's pale/white as snow. And 100% mexican. So when I tell people I'm mexican, they look at him and say "Half?" Other than that we look similar.
My younger brother just capitalizes on the fact he looks older than me and could probably order a beer without getting carded. Of course, we're only two years apart so I guess that shouldn't seem like a stretch. However, you stand the two of us together, and...well...My bro: six feet tall, five o'clock shadow at three, and a few flecks of grey hair. Me: five foot three, no shadow, and I dye my hair (curse you dad!). No one believes we're only two years apart and that I'm the older one :p .
Thankfully we look too much alike in other aspects that people can tell we're related.
slightly offtopic: and the wee one will be turning 21 next month while I will turn 23. Oh boy.

My oldest dughter will be 16 on Feb 6, and everyone thinks that we are sisters when we are out. Probably because we tend to dress similar. Everyone gives me a shocked expression when I tell them that she is my daughter. She is 5'10" and I am 5'7 1/2".

Mis, you must just be very young looking. Don't complain! :p
As for family resemblances, my sister and I "apparently" look alike, to the point that strangers come up to me asking if I'm her sister or ask if we are twins. Uh no, I'm the older one, we have different coloured hair, skin complexion, eyes....Although my mother cannot tell us apart on the phone :)

I'm guessing my kids get their height from their mother's family. The wife is 5'10" and her father is 6'2" and her brothers average around 6'6" heck my oldest daughter is 6'1" but she's like her mother and very light framed the boys on the other hand are like me just about as wide as they are tall. My youngest daughter is 9 and is 5ft nothin. The wife's folks are tall and skinny while my family is average heigth but heavily built. I keep sayin that I'm not a sprinter but a power lifter.
I guess I could have said they take after the mailman but we have a mail-woman and unless my biology classes are messed up that didn't happen. According to the Dr. the youngest son still has a lot of growin to do, thinks he top out at 6'8" to 6'10". It's already to the point when we go out to eat they just look at the menu and say I'll have the whole right side. Thank goodness for hand-me-downs otherwise the little boy and I would have nothing to wear.

My husband and son get asked if they are brothers all the time.
I do look young, but when I am with my son I tend to be a little authoritative, so I guess everyone can tell I am his mom.
However, if he is not with me and I tell people I have a soon to be 14 year old son, I get some strange looks. I will be 36 on Saturday, but get told often I look 27-28. I LOVE it.

I've had people mistake me for one of my younger brothers...Apparently, since the "tall" gene didn't come to me, they think I'm the youngest one. (I'm about 5'9", both of my brothers are over 6'.) Never mind that my hair is a bit grey at times...

When I go a couple of weeks without shaving... people NEVER believe that my parents are old enough to have me.
It probably doesn't help that my parents are mistaken for people in the their late 30's early 40's. (Dad just turned 46 this last Sunday.. and Mom turns 46 next month on the 18th)
Then when I go a couple of weeks without shaving, (and I'm really sure it doesn't help that I have some gray hair that I have to dye) people seem to think I'm late 20's. I'm 22 going on 23 this year.

Me, both my chins, and my Dad. We get the "are they dating?" thing ALL THE DAMN TIME. Once we get past the gross out factor, my Dad is usually (and quietly) pleased that everyone thinks he's so young.
In other news, mine is a face that is mistaken for a high schooler's. Which will pay off someday, I'm sure, but if people think I'm *that* young, it makes me wonder how old they think my Dad is, if they're the same ones that think he's dating me. (ew!)
Then again, maybe I'm putting too much thought into this. :D
Either way, my Dad rocks! :muya:

JM - erm...your Dad is HAWT. Sorry. Didn't mean to gross you out.
On the phone, me and my Mom sound exactly the same. We look like mother and daughter tho *phew*

People would always mistake my sister for my mom. I guess since she's 16 years older than I that technically it was possible.... When she'd babysit me she'd get a lot of glares from little old ladies, thinking that she had been naughty out of wedlock
People would also think that my mom was my grandma. She did have me rather late in life (44) and her hair is completely white.
In other mistaken identities, there was another tech that used to work fulltime with me who was also kind of short, pudgy, and had dark brown hair, and everyone would ask if we were related. After she went on maternity leave, I'd get asked if I'd had my baby already. Um...I was pregnant?

JuniorMintz, your dad is really cute!
AFpheonix, I got the same looks and whispering behind my back by old ladies when I was pregnant with my oldest. I was 22 years old and married, but they all assumed I was a teenage mother.
