Background: I work in what used to be a hospital. At the beginning of the year, the ER closed, and now we have an Urgent Care, which has very limited hours. We're now considered a "medical mall", basically we lease floors to other companies. Right now we have a psych ward, and a long term acute care floor, in addition to our Urgent Care.

Last Sunday morning around 1:30 a.m. two girls came to the Main Lobby. They said their friend had cut her foot open, but was refusing to seek medical attention. I told them we're no longer considered a hospital, we have no ER, and our Urgent Care was currently closed and wouldn't even be open until Monday at noon. I offered to call 911 (they declined), so I gave them the name and directions to the nearest ER, and they left.

Right after this an employee came down, to go outside for a smoke break. I let him know that I'd already spoken with the girls who were hanging out just outside the building. He said ok, and went out for his break.

When he came back in he told me that instead of actually going to the emergency room like I suggested the girls were standing around outside bitching to everyone in ear shot that no one inside the building cared about them, and refused to do anything to help them, and we're a terrible organization with terrible and uncaring employees.

What exactly did they expect me to do? I'm not a doctor, and I have no medical training, so I sure as hell ain't gonna give anyone stitches. Besides I don't have access to a needle and thread anyway.

It's bright purple and looks awesome! My siblings were accident-prone, can you tell?
I used to clean, steri-strip + cover with non-stick dressings for their trips to the ER, it kept the doctors and nurses happy because my mother used to make a real mess of it. Tissues... need I say more?

Superglue!

There was actually a story from a Doc I read once about that. She works in an impoverished fishing-oriented community, and had this old fellow come in with a gash in his arm that he had self-closed with superglue. He had slipped with a scaling knife while out to sea. He figured it was too far to try for land with a bleeding gash, so he'd cleaned it with some alcohol--vodka, I believe--then superglued it shut. After some quick checks, the Doc says she let him go with a warning to keep an eye open for infection. She wrote that she couldn't have done much better for him, so didn't want to rip the wound back open without good reason. The fisherman had a wicked scar later, but no complications, by her story.

Superglue was actually invented as liquid stitches for army medics.......cant remember which war it was but can remember reading about it in a military development book on things that are now common place...like instant coffee for one example, or food tins being designed to keep things fresh on navy ships....
