The other day I was driving my daughter to grandma's house. I was getting sick of what was on the radio. She was asleep, so I put in a Beach Boys CD. I'm listening to it for a bit and she wakes up.
"What's that, daddy?"
"It's the Beach Boys, sweety."
"Turn it up! I like it!"
So I turn it up a bit more, and she starts chair-dancing. She's wiggling to the beat, making hand motions.. getting down with her bad self.
Then we get to "Help me, Rhonda" and I notice in the mirror that she stopped her dancing. She listening very intently to the song.
"What's this song, daddy?"
"It's 'Help me Rhonda'. Good, isn't it?"
"Yeah! I like it! Play it again!"
So we listen again. And again. And again. She didn't want to hear any other songs, just that one. I didn't mind because I really like that song too. She even wanted me to sing along with the music.
We get to grandma's house, and I run in to pick up something. I get back in the car (Don't worry.. I was in and out in 10 seconds) and she asked if we could listen to "Help me, WANDA" again. I said "It's RHONDA, sweety, not WANDA." She said "I know, but I'm going to call her Wanda, and Cosmo is singing to her." (Cosmo and Wanda are cartoon characters from the Fairly Odd Parents on Nick.)
Finally, it got to the point where she and I were both singing along with the song. She remembered most of the words (AMAZING!) and especially loved the parts when they sing "A MOW MOW MOW MOW"
So for our next car ride, I'm introducing her to 50's do-wop. We'll see where that goes.
So far, she likes the Beatles (I got her a Beatles t-shirt for Christmas, and she wears that all the time), The Monkeys, Jimi Hendrix and many other classic bands.

Good for you. I'm sick of listening to all these people listen to this pop crap and there's just too much rap going on. We need to bring back the classics and play them much more!

Haha, Knight, that is so great! She's going to be very well-rounded when she grows up. And from your other stories I can tell you really love her and that she is a wonderful child!

I love the beach boys, and yes I am 25 years of age. I like all of their songs, but I love Kokomo, the most. I hate most of the crap they play now-a-days.

How old is she, Knightmare? My four-year old LOVES the Monkees, the Beach Boys and (sorry about this) Creedence Clearwater Revival. She knows most of the words to Bad Moon Rising, because we both sing along with it loudly when it comes on.

She hates Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, but i am working on her...

*Starts singing* There's a bathroom on the right...

hehehe, I always sing that song like that at least once.

KM, She sounds like my youngest, only my kid songs and dances to Bowling for Soup and throws up her "rock hands." That's quite amusing.

BTW, do other 5 year olds know all the words to "Blister in the Sun"? That's one of all of my kids favorites.

Bad Moon Rising was number one in the UK charts when I was born. I wasn't in the UK at the time, though...

Ah, Beach Boys and Fairly Odd Parents in one post. Your daughter sounds *adorable*

Yes, I'm 23, and I do watch NickToons, but only FOP and SpongeBob. :)

Also, my dad was the same way. We have a picture of me as a baby wearing his HUGE stereo headphones, listening to Oldies 104.3 with Dick Beyonde (this is according to my father). For my 16th birthday, he took me to see the Beach Boys with America, which was awesome. We recently went to see Simon and Garfunkel, and are going to see the Rolling Stones in a few weeks.

It's fun, because as of late, he's been letting me introduce him to music too. He now listens to Snow Patrol, John Mayer, Jack Johnson and Death Cab for Cutie. Fun story: when he first started liking Death Cab after hearing the cd Plans in my car, he tried to ask my cousin Amy, who listens to much of the same music I do, if she liked them as well. Problem was, he couldn't remember the name of the band, so he called them Death Taxi and/or Dead Cab Driver. :D For Christmas that year, we bought him two Death Cab cd's, and put labels over the band name on the cd, effectively changing it to his versions.

I'm glad my dad has a sense of humor to go along with his fantastic taste in music.

Heh. This reminds me of my parents old record collection-and bunch of old country records (Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Probably a bunch of others that I can't remember). I'm flipping through, chuckling to myself, when I come across one solitary rock record: Steppenwolf's Greatest Hits. :super:

My first "fandom" of any band was for the beach boys.

Gotta love the Monkees. I still lust after Mike AND his wool hats.

Good for you for introducing your daughter to Hendrix. My dad played that for me years ago and it blew me away. Same thing with Johnny Winter...(we actually saw him perform live at Fortune Bay Casino around where I live). Because of him, I like all types of music. He is the same way...I listen to some of his weird country rap cds (yes, there is one that he has where its a country guy rapping) and he listens to my heavy metal lol.
