View Full Version : The Mods are not Mind Readers
You know how customers will come into your store and get mad at you for not noticing that they want something when they never opened their mouths to ASK?
When you put a note to the mods in a post you are acting like that customer.
There are thousands of posts on this site and only a handful of mods. What do you think the chances are that one of us will see it and read it? Since we don't have psychic abilities, chances are we won't see it unless it's reported by a member who happens to see it.
So what to do if you need to ask us a question or have a concern?
If the concern is about a post such as a worry that you've posted in the wrong forum, just use the report button on that post and let us know.
Or you can use the PM feature to send a message to one or more of us. If it's a real emergency, the more of us you contact the better.
There is also a forum just for general questions, concerns and bug reports that is a good place to post anything of general interest to everyone.
I can't promise that the reply via the above methods will be instant. We're all volunteers and have busy lives. But at least you're not taking the chance that nobody will see you at all. :)

Here I was thinking I was annoying the mods lately by hitting the report button for things like that. Doesn't help with having STS..and hitting report on the wrong thing .
Good point though. Can't see everything, be everywhere, and the only 'stupid' question is one not asked (well except some SC's questions, but that is beside the point).

No, but that's okay, I already had a couple.
Crystal balls. I'm very good at bullshitting over them and making stuff up.
They don't seem to work here, very well, though. Believe me, they'd have come in really handy if they had. ;)

Could you just imagine the turnover if the mods COULD read some of our minds?? I doubt Raps would want to be responsible for such chaos ;)

Crystal balls. ... They don't seem to work here, very well, though.
They just need to be properly motivated.
Hang them in a net sack off the back end of a pick-em-up truck for a few hundred miles and I'll bet they shape right up!:D

For the record, the report button isn't about "snitching"

We just can't win, can we? We try to moderate the site as best as we can and uphold the rules? We get called Nazis. We try and make the site a welcoming and safe online haven for members, and we're told that we're not doing enough. We try and get members to use the report button, and we get responses like yours.
We're volunteers. Believe it or not, we actually HAVE lives and jobs and families and hobbies. We don't do this job for the glamour of it. We do it because we love this site, and want to see it going for years to come. But we cannot read each and every single post that is made each day. Well we could, but then we'd lose our jobs - and quite frankly, I like being able to pay rent and get food.
It's not a big deal to press a bloody button and say "I think this topic is better suited for fratching" or "This is a duplicate" or "I LOVE me some furry moobs".

rads: I don't think it was meant the way you read it, honestly.
I'm a weirdo, I know, but even I thought that "report" was meant for "problem posts" (fratching material, calling others out, etc). I even thought that was the sort of language visible in the report screen, and was going to say so until I went back and re-read it.
To many people, much of the time, "reporting a post" means "reporting a problem", and problems are usually viewed as what I described above.
Yes, now I know, but even I had a bad understanding, and I've been doing something on/with this site for over 4 years. It's something easy to miss.
At least, that's how I read his reply, myself.

Pedersen summed up wonderfully what I had orignally intended in my post. Up until now I thought it was to bring rule-breaking posts to the mods' attention.

The moderators here are some of the fairest I've encountered, to be honest. Nobody is going to be liked by everybody, but I think that we have an amazing group of moderators. May help that I gave up being a mod on another forum because of the catch 22..(ie either a nazi or a carebear).

I look at it not like a "report" button so much as an "attention" button.
I use it for all sorts of things: posts that better belong on Fratching, posts in the wrong forum, posts where people forgot to edit out names/companies, duplicate posts, etc, etc, etc.

Congrats on quitting smoking, iradney!! I can imagine how tough it must be... :respect:
Much love to all of us here...I'm sure nobody means to upset anyone else :) And thanks to the mods for their hard work! If I had more free time I'd volunteer, should more mods be needed.

"I LOVE me some furry moobs".
I now have to wonder just how many times this has been said in reports...
And, having been a mod on various forums over the years, I know how tough a job it is and no-one will ever convince me to do it again!

Count me in on the "report button can be used for other purposes other than problems? Cool!" camp.
So, if I spam a couple posts and say "hey y'all are doing an awesome job, keep up the good work!", it's a legitimate use?

Actually no. Someone is writing up a contentious post, and before they click the Post button, flying monkeys swoop in and whack them with the keyboard.

Well, I know what my next report is gonna say...

Bumping this up as a reminder folks. We aren't mind readers, so putting notes to the mods in a post is no guarantee that we will see it. If you aren't sure if you are posting in the right section, PM a mod.

Bumping this one again because I've seen about half a dozen threads that include "Mods feel free to move this" just today. If you aren't sure you're posting in the right section, ask a mod.

if i may say, i see that too but it doesn't hurt to go in and report the button, AND give a link to the thread and THEN say why you reported this that way it saves the mods time in having to find what you are talking about
I say this because I asked once, and one mod told me for future reference please post a link to the thread so i do that now, or is that wrong/has changed?

welcome. figured the more help the easier it is. i say this from past experience as a mod in a chat room back in the late '90s so the easier some made by giving detailed reports the better. and yes everyone has a life here but the mods have more responsibility
To give a bit of info/help:
We love when people use the report button to alert us to any problem from a simple "housekeeping" issue to an offensive post.
When a post gets reported, we mods have a direct link to the problem post, so it's not necessary to provide a link to the one you're reporting. Do give as much detail as possible for the report reason, though.
Now, if someone is reporting a duplicate thread topic, it is really helpful if they include the link to the other thread so we mods can have a look at both threads and possibly merge them.
Other valid reasons to report are:
post in the wrong forum
a double post
controversial comments
someone seeking medical advice in the venting forum for health care workers
any other violation of a site or forum rule
anything you feel needs to be reported for any reason
Don't worry about looking or feeling foolish for reporting.
Nobody ever went wrong by using the report button.
We mods really do prefer erring on the side of caution rather than posting within a thread hoping the OP or a mod will see the comment and act on it.

As a regular member of this forum, I used to believe the "report" button was only used to report violations. I've since used the button as a way to say "you might want to keep an eye on this just in case." I believe I've even reported my own topic if I needed to request correcting a typo in the title.
I also wanted to ask a question. Is it appropriate to use the "report" button if you're nominating a war story? I admit to using it for that purpose recently, but not sure if that's the best way to handle that.
I also wanted to ask a question. Is it appropriate to use the "report" button if you're nominating a war story? I admit to using it for that purpose recently, but not sure if that's the best way to handle that.Yep. That's fine too.
You can also PM a mod to nominate.
Just a reminder, if you do nominate a war story using the report button, (or even if you PM), please be sure to include a good explanation of why you feel it deserves the nomination.
Just reporting and saying "War Story," or "I nominate this for War story," isn't good enough. :)
We like to know what it was about the story that made you think "War Story". :)
