So I have to give an informative speech for my public speaking class; and I've given many before, but this time I'm just plain out of ideas. I need something that could take up about 15 minutes since I'm doing a "team-teaching' thing with a group. Any suggestions for interesting, maybe off-the-beaten-path topics I could find a lot of GOOD information on? I'm drawing a blank.

Thanks!!!!

What age are you aiming at?

Are we talking "Why Harry the Hamster shouldn't play with the vacuum cleaner" level, or "Theories of the Ethereal Nature of Mozart's finest works"?

GiggleGoose, feel free to PM me for my screen name on either yahoo or AIM, and I can help you out. I've been in public speaking and teaching public speaking now for a little while, as a former high school debater, i had to do any where from 4-16 min speeches on the most obscure of topics.

Once had to debate the philosophical merits of staples versus tape and how they apply to political views in China.

That was fun. I could give you some ideas, or help you pick one and go with it.

I just did one on Wayne Chrebet. Just a lot of general stuff. Took up 7 minutes, 11 seconds. I also did one on my thumb tumor. I like the Chrebet one better.

Ask around those you work with, for anyone that's been in Toastmasters. They do EXACTLY this sort of thing as a public speaking drill, and anyone who's been a member for more than one meeting will be able to rattle off boatloads of stuff for you.

Someone in my group actually picked one; we're doing it about food poisoning. Weird, yes, but we actually think we can get some good info. lol. Thanks for all your suggestions, though....I was seriously considering "how to be a good customer." :)

Food poisoning in general, or one specific type (botulism, salmonella, e coli, etc.)?

You picked an interesting topic and informative topic. You can talk about the specific organisms that cause food poisoning, how they are spread, famous outbreaks, food preparation tips, etc.
