So since I have a LOT of time on my hands..and my mind is going every direction at once..I've had .. and dropped a ton of game ideas. So..how does a chaotic, confused, and disorderly mind put the pieces together? Rifts.
All the characters in the game, have been affected by a Rift*. Their lives turned upside down in fact. However, within days of being affected by a rift, they are approached and recruited into an organization determined to track down what is causing the Rifts, and put a stop to it.
* Rift - A 'tear' in the very fabric of reality. Nobody knows their cause, or much about them. Almost anything can come from the other side of a Rift. Something from the past, from the future, alien worlds, alternate realities..heck the Incredible Hulk could come out of one (chances are he won't but just demonstrating that fictional characters can also come from a Rift). For some reason..if a single individual is near a rift, and asleep while it is forming, they wake to find they can manipulate that rift (Like your characters..but more about that in a moment)..but only THAT rift. This leads some to believe that the rifts are caused by psychic individuals..but that is only one theory.
Now a Rift will not last long or stick around. However, if a person can manipulate a Rift, a Shard is left behind. A shard has a limited power supply, but it recharges. You as players get to decide what powers/abilities or even if you change form/etc. However...the more powerful the ability, the faster it uses a Shards power supply..so a power can last seconds .. or be on continually..because a Shard does recharge naturally over time. Shards can not be lost or destroyed..they will always come back to the character or reform..always. Most people put them in some form of jewelry to carry around (for guys watches are common). I of course decide how long the power supply will power your power..depending on how powerful it is. You can have multiple powers (each uses the supply up at a unique rate determined by me), and even have multiple powers active (this burns the power supply up faster however).
Your limitations is only what your character dreamed at the time of the Rift forming..and once powers are chosen they can not be changed.

Have to modify the sheet a lot, but same basic premise :D.
Shard -- ((Where is the shard? It does not have to be obvious..but it does have to be ON your character.))
Of course you can have as many abilities as you can dream up..just remember that each takes up energy to use, and the more of them active at a time the faster your shard will shut down.
Attributes: During the dream did your character have any special skills/super strength/etc. These burn power generally slower then Abilities, but again the more powerful the effect the faster they burn power.
Transformation : Was your body different in the dream? If so how. Ever dream you wanted to be a dragon? Werewolf? 100' tall? If your dream self looks different, then that goes here. Yep that also means if your character dreamed that they were more beautiful then Venus (or more handsome then Adonis) that goes here also.
Description: ((what does your character look like normally (ie non shard powered? what’s their personality?)
(what’s your character’s story? How did the shard turn their world upside down? Are they normally bound to a wheelchair but now (when shard power) can outrun the flash?)
(feel free to expand on this as you like, give a little insight into when they first came in contact with the Rift.)
Flaws: (this will remain, but does not need to be used..but adds flavor to a character)
Note : The rift may do good things for your character, but should have also done something bad. Killed family members, erased something from history that only your character remembers that was very important to them...something. Which is why, despite the cool abilities and such..they want these Rifts shut down.

Name: Luigi Cappilatto.
Occupation: Nurse practitioner.
Reflect. The force of anything that touches him can, if he immediately uses power, be turned back upon its source. Punches, bullets, elemental energy, he can become a mirror, casting the force, damage, and effect back at the source. It costs him as much power to use as what he's reflecting back does, +1. (In bullets/fists and other powerless things, it costs him 1.)
Summon the hurricane: He can summon a hurricane. A literal hurricane, which focuses on him as the eye. He cannot control the hurricane, but it never does him any harm.
Gentle rain: The supernatural opposite of his hurricane power. When Luigi calls for the gentle rain, harmless water flows over him and around him. Any illnesses that the water washes over are healed, and not just on Luigi, but anyone caught in the gentle rain. He cannot use this offensively.
Shard -- A beautiful piece of crystal in a rainbow of pastel colors. He wears it like an necklace, but part of it has become enfused to his neck.
Talk to the animals. He has the ability to speak with, and speak back to, animals. This does not give him control over them.
The tarot: Luigi never understood his Italian mother's fascination with the gypsy arts, especially her tarot cards. But he certainly understands what the tarot means now. He can perform divination with them, though he doesn't always understand what he learns until it has come to pass.
Looks: Luigi has brunette hair, rather wild and free. He wears a black sweatshirt, a pair of black jeans of a material softer than denim, black cowboy boots, a big purple sweater-jacket, and a purple scarf. In the sweater pocket is a secure compartment for his mother's tarot cards, which is perfectly water (and hurricane) proof. And, of course, his necklace of the shard. His eyes are green.
Personality: Luigi is the ultimate student. He adores knowledge and learning, and never stops learning new things. This is actually his big weakness. He is mysterious and changable, as if he himself were a hurricane one minute and the gentle rain the next. He is occasionally inclined to steal little things and can be rather sneaky, but at base, he is a good-hearted man. Until something sets him off. Besides his now deceased mother, there is only one woman for him, but because she only dates women, he treats his colleague and best friend, nurse Kathleen Poindexter, as if she were a courtly love and a best friend he would die to protect.
Backstory: Luigi was born in England, but his parents were Romany gypsies who moved to England to escape persecution, and started their lives over. Finding Luigi was a gifted scholar with a brilliant mind, they used him as their salvation and hope, and he repaid them well when he started his own practice. (He is actually still in school to become a full doctor and specialist, but decided to go into business for himself when he qualified as a nurse practitioner so he could get money, not just for himself, but for his parents.)
How did the shard turn Luigi's world upside down: The shard introduced a horrible beast in England, one day. Luigi's mother, a powerful clairvoyant and psychic (as befits a Romany) either opened the shard or sensed it and helped in the process somehow. She ran to the shard, leading Luigi and his father to chase after her. But to their horror, it unleashed a terrible beast, a rampaging dragon. The dragon killed Luigi's mother on the spot, and then set out to attack all of England. The miliary was not able to stop it, but suddenly, Luigi found he could. In his rage, a hurricane appeared, and lightning came with it. The dragon was destroyed, and Luigi collapsed.
He awoke in the hospital a week later, learning from Kathleen, (his best friend, Kathleen Poindexter, formerly of Ireland before she moved to England to escape the violence,) that much of London had been ruined by the dragon. And that more dragons were appearing, the last one seen in the United States . . . Luigi knew that these shards must be stopped now before the world had more dragons than they could deal with. Kathleen never left Luigi's side until he revived, of course. She felt he should know that his father too had died in the dragon's attack.
Luigi is manic-depressive.
He also likes to steal little things, but tries to control it.
He is in love with Irish-immigrant nurse Kathleen Poindexter, but since she's a lesbian, he never says so. Kathleen is his best friend, and he treats her in a courtly way, which she greatly respects.

Keep in mind that once your shard runs out of juice you are a perfectly ordinary person. Also, rather have no military trained/mixed martial artists..etc..the object is to have some very ordinary (untrained) people put into very weird situations. :).
Also..every rift leaves a shard, but not every shard has somebody who can control it..(dun dun dun).

Name: Simon Kisvalter
Occupation: Theoretical physicist
Shard -- Simon's Shard lodged itself in his right eye-socket. It normally appears like a roughly hemispherical mother-of-pearl 'false eye,' until Simon starts using his powers, when it starts glowing bright blue.
Telekinesis -- Simon has the ability to move things with his mind when using his Shard powers. This can be anything from lifting something and throwing it-- though the heavier something is, the more effort it takes, and thus the faster he logically burns through his power-- to releasing a telekinetic "pulse" with more destructive potential. He can also use this same power to move himself, giving him bursts of faster speed or even limited flight, or fold a telekinetic barrier around himself to protect him from harm. (As an example of how his telekinetic power works, see the movie "Chronicle.")
Rift Sight -- Simon still doesn't entirely have a good grasp on this ability and how it works. As a result, he can't turn it off and on at will. When active, Simon can perceive the world through his Shard, and enables him to see energy trails and lines. This can let him see those who have been 'touched' by a Rift, and especially those possessing a Shard, while also giving him the ability to track the trails/lines to nearby Rifts or places where Rifts have formed-- or might form. Again, Simon doesn't have a great deal of control over this ability. It is not always active, and comes and goes when it pleases.
Quantum Fission -- The most powerful of Simon's abilities, but also the most dangerous, as well as draining and taxing on him. He has to be close to full power in order to use it, and using it will drain his Shard completely. Focusing his will on a target, Simon causes the target to tear itself apart on the quantum level. Because of the energies being released by such an occurrence, it causes great devastation at 'ground zero.' The destructive energies and force of this do not harm Simon, but his protection from this power does not extend to anyone else. To date, he has used this power exactly once.
Esoteric Intellectual Focus -- Simon hasn't been given super-intelligence, but rather the ability to focus close to 90% of his brain onto a problem to resolve it. This has been a great boon in helping him stabilize some of his quantum theories, but it only seems to work in that regard. This focus also comes in handy when he studies the Rifts, but given that each Rift is unique and has its own properties, this means his theories for one Rift does not work another.
Slow Metabolism -- Since being touched by a Rift and receiving his Shard, Simon has found that he needs to eat and drink less often, and can function for three days without sleep. Exerting himself or using his abilities can negate this and will tire him out.
Transformation: In his dream-state, Simon saw himself as a radiant humanoid being comprised of blue energy. When using his powers, as his Shard starts glowing, the glow suffuses his body gradually, starting in his hands, and it lights up his veins, despite his powers generally being focused through his nervous system. Thus, if someone ever sees Simon in full blue-form, it's probably a sign that he's going to use his Quantum Fission power, and they should be running away.
Description: Simon is a tall, if somewhat unassuming man with a tangle of dark hair and a kind of nervous energy to him. He wears standard academic clothing: button-down shirts and khakis or slacks, and wears an eye-patch over his right eye. This is to keep people from staring at his Shard, and to try to keep the uncontrolled 'Rift Sight' from affecting him too severely. If his Shard were removed, his eye socket would be empty. In terms of personality, Simon definitely comes across as a bit of a dweeb and nerd, friendly, if depressed or guilty about something.
A keen young student of theoretical physics, Simon Kisvalter impressed his professors with his insight and theories involving neutrinos, strangelets, and even his equations relating to Einstein-Rosen bridges. He was invited to come to the RHIC on Long Island to help conduct an experiment hoping to find the Higgs boson.
When the RHIC was activated for this experiment, everyone present was rendered unconscious by an unexpected burst of energy. Simon, in this unconscious state, dreamed. He saw a terrifying monster, like something out of a Lovecraft story, rip its way out of the Rift that had formed and tear the facility apart. Simon, horrified, tried to deny what he was seeing, and did so with such a will that the monster was torn apart on the quantum level, although this caused an explosion that destroyed the RHIC facility and killed or injured most of the scientists and technicians on site.
Simon is of the belief that the experiment at the RHIC caused the Rifts to start occurring and appearing, and is now working tirelessly to try to find a way to stop it. With each Rift he finds, he expands his Unified Rift Theory in the hopes of reversing the effect of the experiment to restore the normalcy of the world.
- As noted, Simon has no control over his 'Rift Sight' ability, and wears an eye-patch to try to minimize the shock of its activity.
- Simon feels a sense of responsibility/remorse/guilt over the Rifts' cause and formation, whether or not this belief is unfounded.
- Simon is a science nerd and not a fighter in the slightest.

Name: Christopher "Christina" Gates (yes the girl's nick name is odd until you read his description/background)
Occupation: College Student (studying law), gamer geek
Spacial Manipulation: Chris has the ability to manipulate and warp space. Consequently he also has the always on capability to measure distance, size, location etc. instantly. All of his other abilities are applications of this power.
Wormhole: Chris can open a gateway from one location to any other location and move himself and anything through it. The amount of power used is relative to the distance, mass/size, and number of objects moved.
Hammer Space: Chris can also send objects to "nowhere" and store them for later. Like the wormhole, the amount of power this uses is relative to the size and number of objects stored or retrieved. For some reason this can not store people. Every time he has tried the person immediately reappears.
Scrying: Chris can send any or all of his senses across a distance if he chooses to do so. While this uses far less power than Wormhole it does carry its own inherent risks as he is extending his senses beyond himself. While his senses are extended, his awareness of his own immediate vicinity is proportionally reduced. IE if he sends his hearing across town he can't hear anything going on around him.
Shard: Chris's shard is a clear crystal with a roiling black hole in the center of it. He has had it affixed to be the face of a silver pocket watch that he carries with him. It carries the engraving, "For Chris with Love: "
Attributes: He is always aware of where he is, what direction he is facing, and the exact distance between him and anything he can see.
Transformation: Chris's dream was one of those odd ones where he was not a direct participant, but an outside observer. The dream was instead about his fiance Christina Baker. The two had always been avid fans of games, anime, and geek culture in general. In his dream Christina was a character from a Japanese anime dressed up in the typical anime school girl outfit. True to form she had a "hammer space" which she used aggressively to keep the unwanted attention of other guys away from her. -- Consequently Chris's "dream self" is his fiance in the school girl outfit. A roughly five and a half foot tall woman, not overly beautiful, but a far cry from ugly, sandy blond shoulder length hair, glasses and blue eyes.
Normal Description: Just shy of six feet tall, rail thin, roughly 160 pounds, dark brown hair, blue eyes. He is anything but athletic.
As a teen Chris thought he had everything figured out. Life in high school hadn't been the greatest, but that would all change when he got to college. And change it did. He enrolled at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor law school and was instantly accepted into the program. Life was looking up and school was a far enough away from his small town Tennessee home that it felt like he could finally leave his old self behind.
Then he met her. She wasn't drop dead gorgeous, but she was perfect. They liked the same things, were both studying law, and as it turned out, had lived only minutes from each other back home. They studied together, dated, was working on getting up the nerve to ask her to marry him when she popped the question first and gave him a silver pocket watch instead of an engagement ring. It was the happiest day of his life, and the last time he ever saw her.
That evening he had the strangest dream and the next morning she was gone, the shard in bed where she should have been. Worse yet, no one knew who she was. His fellow students thought he was going crazy, that he had made this girl up and all insisted that he hadn't been dating anyone in the three years he had been in Ann Arbor. The first time he transformed almost drove him over the edge.
The loss of the love of his life made his decision of whether or not to join with the others a simple one. His one overriding goal is to find some way to return those things which the rifts have erased.
Flaws: Chris still hasn't come to terms with the fact that his Fiance is not only gone, but that as far as the rest of the world is concerned she never existed. This is compounded by the fact that his 'dream self' and thus powered state looks just like her. Consequently, he hates to use his powers, but will when it is necessary. He is also prone to bouts of depression mourning what he has lost.
Chris is anything but a trained fighter. Much like the average mundane person he will often forget he is special and when push comes to shove is as likely to panic and run as he is to stand his ground

Of note, regarding Simon's "Rift Sight" ability. When it goes active and what it reveals to Simon are entirely up to the GM's discretion, hence the uncontrolled nature of it.

I will post up an intro IC here in a bit, to show you what insanity you have signed up for. I will also intro some 'utility' characters (designed specifically to help the group do what they need to do..get around, get supplies, etc). Your characters have already been recruited (you can post how, or just assume they have been your call)..but have yet to have an official mission.
BTW I like the characters so far..and excellent backgrounds.
Ok..going to leave the 'call' to you, how they get ahold of you, etc..unless you want me to make an individual post, then I will. You will be contacted by some of the non Shard using people working for 'The Company'. (Yeah yeah generic name).
Here is some utility people you should know..and what they do.
Manny 'Shift' Wilson - Able to move people or things vast distances, including himself. He is your 'transportation'.
Sheila 'Xerox' Moon - Able to create items out of thin air, though bigger things take longer. Can also duplicate just about anything (not powers/abilities..just inorganic items)
Mica 'Fixit' Deron - Sometimes you get attached to things, if they get broke, and you don't just want a new one..'Fixit' can fix anything.
The Snowmen (currently in Nevada on a snow capped mountain)
They regenerate just about any damage, and even if you manage to destroy them completely..more will form from the snow of the mountain..even if you get the mountain clear..the rift will cause more snow. The one way to put a stop to them for good is to close that rift.

Long distance transport is just one of Chris's things. Plus his suffers the drawback of drawing more juice the more he takes with him. If he wants to be good for anything else, he can't constantly be warping folks places :)
I vote we keep the utility character. They function differently enough I think to be warranted.

Cool..just remember that sealing a Rift is one thing..that just stops more from coming through..anything already here..you still have to deal with. Though the Nevada heat will help a lot with the snow after the Rift is sealed..and yes..Rifts can change the area around them :p.

In case you are wondering, this is not normal Rift behavior. Rifts usually just dump whatever comes from the otherside, dies, and leaves a shard. Normally do not stay open, normally needs a human 'sleeper', and normally does not repower shards.

Simon's accident was at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RHIC), which is in Upton, New York, on Long Island, not Rhode Island.
And yeah, I figured the explosion there would be major enough to make headlines, though of course there aren't many witnesses left to the reason why. (Giant Lovecraftian monster gets shredded on the quantum level, creating huge explosion.)

I know this seems like a rip off of one of Jay's NPC's..but remember I had Shadow Tiger show up BEFORE we did the throw down in Children of the Gods. :p
Name: Shadow Tiger
Occupation: Manservant/Caretaker for 'The Master'
Shard -- Interestingly enough, he has fashioned his shard into a golden tiger mask that he wears at all time. Of course only part of the mask is the actual shard, but it is hard to tell which part.
Shadow Manipulation - His most powerful and versatile ability. He can teleport himself (only) through shadows, cause shadows to come alive (and solid) and control them. One of his favorite things to do with this is to create 'shadow creatures' (especially tigers).
Multiply - He can create real physical copies of himself (along with shadow copies, but that is beside the point). What is more, as long as one copy survives..he will not die. Doesn't matter if it is the 'original' or a 'copy' that survives.
Tiger Tiger, burning Bright (Also a transformation) - Turns into a large ghostly tiger made of golden flame. Burns shard energy very quickly, however.
Attributes: Ninjitsu, Martial Arts, Weapon Specialist (sword).
Transformation : As listed turns into a golden flame ghostly tiger.
Description: About 5'7" tall. Wearing a ninja suit and a tiger mask. What he looks like under the mask is anybody's guess.
Backstory: Unknown at this time.
Flaws: Deathly loyal to 'The Master' whom he serves without hesitation even though the 'Master' has never asked him to, nor wants to be considered his 'Master.

Remember unlike the others this rift has already closed. Right now at least, there is no way of sending them home..unless the current holder of the shard (the little girl) has a way.

Chuckles this little rivalry between the girl and Chris might be fun. Also there is now new information for Simon to consider...the fact that Rifts can be so small that they can not be picked up by whatever devices your employers use to detect them...

Air Bending - Much like the Air Benders in Avatar she can manipulate wind in many and various ways. Too numerous to mention here.
Invisibility - She can become invisible to anything but Rift Sight.
Attributes: No special attributes.
Transformation : Stuck as a young girl, can't even change her outfit..well she can..but anything she puts on transforms to look like the dress she is currently wearing.
Description: 5'7" Tall, long wavy black hair, emerald green eyes. She was a model, so very attractive also. A little..perturbed at being stuck as a little girl.
Flaws: A little defensive because she is stuck in the body of a little girl.

Note : Your characters are strong enough to resist the lure of the shards. It will not go away until they are 'claimed', but it can be resisted and ignored.

Of course your characters won't know this, but you have a few days 'off' for now. Not every day can have a Rift..so if they need to do something they can. Will give Simon some time to do some research also.

Ok this is for the future, for those who chose to claim the shards..
You will not have access to the complete powers of the shards, just what I call the 'edge' of it.
When each is claimed (IF they are claimed) I will list what abilities and powers you have access to..which will be minor at first..but you will get more as time passes.
Now here is a few 'facts' about the elements.
Fire..it is sort of a paradox..its power is at its peak when the person who claims it 'lets go of control', yet it seeks those that it thinks has the most self control.
Water - its power comes from total peace. To reach it's peak its controller must be perfectly calm.
Earth - Its power comes from the heart of its controller. To reach its peak of power, its controller must be focusing on saving, rescuing, or protecting others.

Remember the reason for these PM's are because they are either something your character knows and others do not (and you do not have to let them know unless you want to), or they are something only your character experiences. :)..again sharing with the others is optional.

Since we know (for now) what the water shard does...here is what Chris can do with the Earth shard..as promised it is not as powerful as the other three..yet.

I'm leaving out of town tomorrow night and won't be back in town until July 8. Going camping in the mountains with my father so I will be without internet until then.

Well nothing has really been going on lately, so looks like it will probably not be an issue. Think I need to step up the challenge on how to close gates to engage you guys a little more.

Possibly, also I think it would help if I were more aware of what I can and can't do. So far every situation we've been in doesn't really require me to be special to solve the problem. I can't speak for the others, but I don't feel like we've really been necessary to the plot yet.
And the last one really felt like a Deus Ex Machina, not that I can throw stones either, I'll admit my ability to post has been erratic. (just my 2 cents, I'll try to brainstorm while I'm away and come up with something constructive to add to this)

Right now, all I can really comment on is the Deus Ex Machina. I agree..the vamp and the werewolf..are sort of meant to be insanely powerful. Regardless how it goes, your group is going to have to find a way to defeat at least one of them. Your characters are powerful, they are meant to be..so the ones that they face has to be that much more so. It will take all your powers, skills, and abilities to even survive, let alone win.
I've come up with a more challenging way to close a rift, changing the rules of the rifts again (luckily this is not a big idea..as the Rifts themselves change/grow over time)
