View Full Version : Exploding houses in my town (for real)
There's lots to worry about in my town -- poverty, crime, urban decay...
We've got something new to worry about now... exploding houses.
I'm serious. Twice in two weeks, houses have literally exploded. Experts are blaming it on natural gas and there's no reason whatsoever to doubt that. Still, you never really think about the possibility of exploding houses until it starts happening around you.
Last night's incident was only a few blocks from me. It leveled two houses and damaged two more to the point that they had to be torn down this morning. A fifth looks like a Barbie Dollhouse... it's intact except that it's missing an exterior wall.
I walked down to the scene today and it was an eerie experience. I don't think I've fully absorbed it yet.
The good news is that nobody was seriously hurt in either incident.

Well... that's no way to enjoy the scnery.
Hopefully they figure out what EXACTLY is allowing the houses to explode. NG seems appropriate, but they should figure out why it's happening with such frequency.

Umm also if it is natural gas and unless there is a pocket under your town or something I'd check to see if I had the same company as the houses that exploded. Sounds like something is not quite right.

In this state, there was a problem like that in the early 90s. The problem was the gas lines were placed in the 60s and only lasted 30 years, roughly. I wouldn't be surprised if the same situation could occur there, especially if there was a major replacement of gas lines in the 70s.

Is this in Wisconsin? I saw a news story a couple weeks ago about a house that exploded in WI and someone was killed in a truck outside or something like that...

It could also be sewer gas (methane). The water in the traps evaporate and then the sewer gases collect in the house until the right mixture of methane, oxygen, and a spark and then blewie!!!
I remember several years ago when the sewer in Mexico City blew up and tore the streets up for miles because some sewer gas was touched off. A lot of houses shouldn't have this problem because codes require check valves to keep backflow from happening but valves do wear out. An easy way to tell if it's sewer gas is if you smell poo it's sewer gas.

Not in Wisconsin. And fortunately, no one was hurt in either incident.
As I've been looking at the photos I took of the aftermath of the latest incident, it's amazing no one was hurt. What used to be three story buildings are just a pile of rubble with few definable objects.
Still unknown is exactly what caused Saturday's explosion.

TNT...worried about exploding houses in his hometown.
Now be honest, how many people saw that and thought they'd stumbled into Fark?

/Hehe..I noticed that too.
//I like having electric cooking...gas stoves make me nervous (though our heat and hot water are gas now; they used to be oil).
Heard a story this morning about a farmer whose shed exploded on Sunday morning. Apparently methane from cow manure. The farmer credits the early clock change with saving his family's lives...if they hadn't forgotten to set their clocks they would have been working out in or near the shed...but they forgot so they were still sleeping when it happened.
When I was younger, my only goal in life was to be the President. I undoubtedly would have been one of the "initials" presidents... FDR... JFK... TNT.
This would have given headline writers some fun. When I won the election, we'd have seen, "TNT Levels Opponents." When I went to Russia and lost my temper, it would have been, "TNT Explodes in Kremlin."
And on and on and on. We'd have all gotten really tired of it and I would have lost my re-election campaign because people just wanted to make it stop.
Good taste prevents me from repeating some of ways women combined the TNT, with, um, you know...
