View Full Version : Was I a SC or was I justified in my actions?

Okay, I have been kind of bothered by this and could not wait till I got home to ask if I did or said the right thing. I just arrived back from Las Vegas last night and although the trip as a whole was pretty awesome, there were times that I was disgusted with the level of service and the rudeness I encountered, so here is my stories:

1) After a very long and hot day at the race track on Saturday, we decided to just eat at our hotel, we decided we wanted to try the Nascar Cafe as we had not been there yet. Jim and I go to the cafe and at the front they have a sign that says they will seat you. Right at the podium there are three employees and what looked like the manager. No one looked at us nor said anything as the manager seemed to be talking very loudly and giving instructions to the employees, we stood there for about three minutes (although it seemed longer) before I finally asked "Are we going to get seated soon"? The manager looks at me and says "we are doing shift change" I turned and looked at Jim and she repeated the statement "we are doing shift change". Well about a minute later the hostess seats us and we order our drinks but by this time Jim is very angry because as we were walking away to be seated he saw the manager roll her eyes at us. Jim (he was being a SC) was ticked and said he was not going to eat there and just walked out. I waited for the waitress and explained our lack of service at the front and said I was sorry and that we were not staying. I was a bit angry myself as I did not like the treatment either. I would have been more understanding if they would have at least said "Hi" and told us they would be right with us but to out right ignore us is beyond my comprehension.

2) We would on occasion stop at this little coffee shop at the hotel (very expensive) and get coffee or soda, well one day while I was in line I noticed that the girl who was serving people kept taking her hat off and running her hands through her hair and then kept on serving people. Not once did she wash her hands and her hair was real long, draping down the front of her uniform. I, as a manager at a resturant, was a bit taken aback by the lack of hygiene especially with the rise in food borne illnesses. So when I got to the front and placed my order I quietly said to the girl " I don't want to sound rude but did you realize it is very unsanitary to play with your hair and serve people without washing your hands?" She said "no", but proceeded to go to the little hand washing sink a few feet away and wash her hands. I said it quietly so no one heard me, but I thought she should have been told and I did not want to get a manager and make a huge stink over it. I did notice the next day that she had her hair tied back. Good for her.

There were more instances of rudeness, but I think alot of it was the language barrier as there were a lot of Mexicans and they had a hard time understanding me as much as I could not understand them. I noticed whenever I said "pop" or "soda" they would give me the strangest look but when I said "coke" their face would light up with recognition! That made me laugh as I thought of "coke" being the universal language!! All in all it was a fun trip and you know most people go on vacation and gain weight..well with all the heat and the massive amounts of walking, I lost 15 pounds!! Plus on my second day I won $1100.00 on a penny machine and I only put in $15.00. I was pretty excited.

I did leave a generous tip at other places when we were served and I left the maid a tip everyday with little notes that said "Have a great day, you are doing a great job, thank you" I felt really good leaving the notes, hoping it would make their day a little brighter doing such a thankless job!

Your actions, are to me anyway, justified. I would have the same thing, as in walking out, for them rolling there eyes at me. Speaking of that.

Just about a month ago, my mom and I , went to a local Mexican restaurant, which has the best food, I might add, which we wanted a take out order. The woman helping us, gave everyone including us attitude. Like when we ordered, I had to think about what I wanted, and the woman, said "I will not wait, if you are not ready", which got me upset. We asked her when it would be ready, and we told her that we will be back at the time, since we had to grab a couple of things from the store. We came back, and the woman had an attitude, because we left. I found the owner, and said I know she is your family, but out of respect, you have to have a talk with her, since she was giving everyone an attitude. We went back over the weekend, and she was as nice as she could be.

No, its not SC-ish to complain about an employee rolling their eyes at you, and I fail to see why you think it would be. If some hotel employee was rude to me like that, though, you can bet I wouldn't simply have walked away nicely, I would have asked to see the restaurant manager, the F&B manager and the general manager, in that order...It takes two seconds to say, "Sorry, we are just doing the shift change, we will be with you in one moment". Sucky, no. Customer who expects the minimum of courtesy and good service, yes.

They'll get what's coming to them when you come back and find a completely different business in its place. When I go to a place of business and I get treated like scum-of-the-earth I just take my business somewhere else.

Definitely not SC, especially in the first case - you went out of your way to stay and explain to the waitress, who had nothing to do with your initial experience and it was nice of you to let her know why you were leaving. You could have just up and left with your friend.

And with the coffee shop girl, you did not yell and embarrass her, you didn't go to the manager and get her in trouble, and apparently she did not take it badly, either. Sometimes things need to be said and we are so afraid of being sucky we don't say them. So good for you.

And of course Coke is a universal language! That is funny, though.

Frankly, I don't think either of you were sucky. Jim was letting his displeasure known by walking. He didn't abuse anyone. He just left.

I roll my eyes when I pass SOS anywhere... I don't think he sees me, but I'll be damned if I care.

Does this make me a SE?

You were not being a SC at all. I would have walked out too. Sometimes, even the best managers don't realize they have sucky employees until someone brings it to their attention.
