  • Just a Short one for Starters

Hello, I thought I'd just start with one short story that happened awhile ago.

I used to work as an assistant manager for a medical research charity, in this shop, there used to be shelves behind the till counter where the more valuable donations would be displayed.

On this occasion I was standing there serving, when a woman decided to walk behind the till to get to these shelves. I moved and blocked her path so she couldn't get any further. The woman, very deliberately moved to place one of her feet on top of mine, and increased the weight as she tried to explain how she was always allowed to go behind the till by the volunteers. This went on for about for only 5 or 10 minutes, with me trying not to let on she was hurting my foot (I didn't know how to react to what she as doing so just tried to ignore it) and explaining I'd be happy to just place items on the counter for her to look at, and if she could please leave the area behind the till for security reasons.

She gave up eventually, but my foot was sore afterwards! I hope that drabble made sense.

Good god. If it weren't for the site I'd ask what sort of person feels that it's alright to inflict battery upon another human being.

Shame you can't just call the cops on her for trespassing and battery, could you? I mean, I used to have a coworker that would hide in the back whenever a certain woman came into the store because every single time she would run over his foot with her motorized scooter. I don't think he ever told the owners about it though but if it were up to me, it'd be one warning about watching where she was driving before assault and battery charges were filed or get banned.

Yeah, I would not have handled that even remotely politely. Customer service be damned, you don't lay a finger on me without my permission.

I would have politely, but firmly, informed the customer that they were standing on my foot and to please step back then (insert security reasons). Sometimes simply calling the customer out on their bad behavior is enough. Though it probably wouldn't have helped in your situation. Some people...
I hope your foot feels better and that karma bites her in the butt...er...foot.

What the flying fuck? Who DOES that? That's assault, but very slyly done. I mean, a lot of people wouldn't know it was happening. That's really, really awful. And calculated. And just evil. And less like an assault, more like torture. What a nasty piece of work. If she did that to me, and kept increasing the pressure on my foot like that, I'd fly at her, I swear to God. And she would NEVER be welcome in the shop again.

I would have love to have responded with something like that. This was about 5 years ago, and I at the time had no confidence, was very much a meek little mouse with no idea how to deal with any conflict (I should never have been made an assistant manager, but that's another story), so I just took it. It wasn't a case of me being polite, I was too scared to respond in any other way.

Some people are just evil, nasty bullies, looking to start trouble wherever they can. Customer service people are, unfortunately, a favorite target of these bullies, because the public has been brainwashed into believing that The Customer Is Always Right. Therefore, if you call them out on their behavior, they'll go running to your manager and get you in trouble for Bad Customer Service. And if you don't call them out, they just keep hurting and hurting you. We can't win.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Echoing everyone else's sentiment, you were way more polite than I would have been. The second they stepped on my foot and started to increase pressure like that, I'd have made it clear, in no uncertain terms, to get off my foot. If they persisted, then I would have given them a firm push backward until they stepped back. (They gave me permission to lay my hands on them the second they touched me.)

Next time something like this happens to you, OP, remember that they do not have the right to do this to you. Customer service takes second place to your physical well-being.

If it were me, depending on footwear/surface friction I'd have pulled my foot out as quickly as possible, if it trips her up, well, not my problem

If it were me, the joke would be on foot-stander. My feet have unusual proportions, so the only shoes that I can wear comfortably are work boots. Yep, my normal street shoes have steel toe protectors. Can you imagine the bully's reaction, after believing they have been inflicting pain, when they hear "Do you realize that for the last 10 minutes you have been standing on the steel toe caps of my shoes?"

Happened to me once ... way back when I worked in the warehouse for Service Merchandise. Jackass female sales human decided I was making eyes at *her* BF, who also worked in the WH. Got up in my face in the break room, stepping on my foot and doing the finger poke into the center of mass thing. I *screamed* in my fairly well supported colouratura soprano OUCH GET OFF MY DAMNED FOOT NOW into her face from about a foot away with all the other people in the break room more or less ignoring us. Until the scream. I haz volume and am not afraid to use it. Not that it hurt, I was wearing steel toed sneakers. I have no idea why she tried it, warehouse all had to have steel toed work shoes. Maybe she figured since I was a girl I didn't?
